milsurp rifles

A yugo mauser in 8mm would not be a bad choice. You could get one for under 200 and then spend a couple more hundred on a couple cases of milsurp 8mm. Just a thought!

While th Garand is king, I'm looking for one myself, i would also look at the Mauser K98. You might get lucky and score a nice vet bringback, or, go with a Russian Capture and buy a bunch of ammo..

I'd keep the M1 Garand at the top of the list. Second the 1903 Springfield. Some other Mil Surps to consider. Mosin Nagants are still plentiful and cheap. Get some while you can. Ammo is also still relatively easy to find but getting more and more expensive. Russian Capture Mausers, Lee Enfield No4 Mk 1's, Swiss K 31's etc are also good mil surps to collect and shoot IMO.

The SKS is a nice rifle but use to be $150-$250 there's no chance I'd pay $500 for one when you can get a WASR for $450.

whoa, guess there are some hoops to get the garand at CMP there. After all that, can it be shipped directly to you or have to go through FFL? Is it a C&R item? will it matter since i do not have C&R license ?

Yea, i kinda regret not buying an SKS way back when. just talked to a buddy of mine. He got a Yugo for $170 bux handpicked like 4 years ago (never fired).

What's funny though, wife found out about the search page of all these rifles (forgot to close the laptop) when she wants to browse on facebook. The look on her face was priceless (not in a good way i can tell you that)sooooo, she wants to wait until the pay raise go in effect and that we could save up first. but I will definitely post pics here on what i decided to get WHEN i am able to get it. Thanks for all the replies. Good to know there are MANY other options after the first one.

CMP ships directly to you. No FFL. The requirements look more intimidating than they really are.
And when you've done it once and are in the system, the second and subsequent rifles are too easy.:)

quoteThe problem with milsurps is that they are habit forming. You just can't have one.

ain't that the truth.

chewee, check out this Savage Enfield.I would be nabbing it but for the fact I just scored a nice Savage Enfield.Still I keep looking at that listing though.;)Nice Savage Enfields don't come around all the time compared to other brands, but it may shoot high at 100yds unless you get a taller front sight.I haven't even had a chance to try mine yet.

Ammo for everything just about except Mosin's are just a problem right now availability and price wise.Yugo Mausers are good buys right now though.BTW M39 Mosin is awesome rifle, and not too expensive depending on condition. And yes the Garand is top notch also.

I have to add my vote for the Garand. I recently bought one from Tony at www.garandguy.com and really love it. He is a trustworthy source for Garands and has them for immediate sale. You'll pay more than CMP service grade prices, but you get a good value for what you get. Check it out.

Only reason to go to Garand Guy is if you do not meet the qualifications of the CMP.

The 595 dollar service grade M1 is a 900 dollar rifle just about anywhere else.

Of course this is the Civilian Marksmanship Program we are talking about and you are supposed to keep your rifle and not turn it around for profit. The CMP hopes you would somehow promote marksmanship for yourself or a junior shooter with your M1 but that is not required.

I hope to make a trip to the South store very soon. I have a junior shooter in the house who is about to turn 18. :)
