I'm thinking about buying a Kel-Tec P11. Found a good Deal on one used that is like-new. Got pretty good reviews if a few mags ive read. Its main purpose would be that of a home security and ccw gun if they ever pass the bill in Illinois, and for my license when i go to Florida.

I'm very happy with it..it' my pocket piece....very easy to conceal, you can pocket carry in any attire other wthan going around in underwear!!!

Personally I love a p3at and the situation you described is perfect for a P11 in a dual role especially if it's home security use is in a back-up role to a shotgun/rifle. Though depending on your time until moving to Florida I would not hold my breath on CCW coming to Illinois anytime soon. Therefore, I would get a better range gun/home defense pistol. Give us a price range and we could give numerous suggestions or of course shoot a bunch and pick whichever is most comfortable and accurate for you.

My wife and I both carry P-11's. They are very reliable guns and are quite accurate. The trigger is fairly stiff but not unbearable. Easily concealable, and even with the 12 rd magazine, it's not overly heavy. There are better home/range guns, but for the price you will not be disappointed with a P-11. You can also find .40 S&W kits for them sometimes on some of the auction sites. Check out the K-T forum and website at WWW.KTOG.ORG, also.

I have the P-11 and carried it for years until Kel-Tec came out with the PF9. The P-11 became a nightstand gun. The PF9 is single stack so it is thinner than the P-11 and it has a MUCH better trigger. Here is my PF9 and the Galco Pocket holster I carry it daily in.

I also carry the Keltec P11 as a CCW. I carry inside waistband at about the 1 o'clock position. It is very easily carried, and does not create an physical discomfort when sitting. I have plenty of other handguns which I could carry, but he P11 is by far the best, in my opinion. For its size, weight, magazine capacity, reliability, durability, and acceptable sized caliber, it's the best CCW I own. I own quite a few .45s and .44s, but due to size, weight, a capacity they are impractical for daily concealed carry...IMO.

It may be because of different body shapes because I had always found the KT P11 to be way too bulky for any kind of CCW carry. Finally gave it to a LEO friend for use as a fanny-pack carry.

Never had any problems with reliability though.

I carry mine, with mag grip extensions and armalaser, with a waistband clip at 3:30-4. It can be slightly uncomfortable on long car rides, but other than that it conceals awesome and is very comfortable and out of mind.

The key to learn the trigger is lots of dry fire practice done safely with a snap cap (both hands, one hand L&R, and practice draw too)

CWL, I am amazed you can't CCW the keltec. What *do* you CCW? A snubby?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahha ...

CCW in Illinois? I want some of whatever you're smoking :)

Just joking of course. I have a P11, do I like it? I wouldn't use such a strong word as 'like' to describe it, it does the job, kinda like a toilet plunger. When the need arrises I'll use it like a tool and feel comfortable with it, but can't imagine getting attached enough to it to join a Kel-Tec forum.

I carry my P11 everywhere/everyday. I occasionally get interested in other pistols for daily carry because I wouldn't mind stepping up to .45acp, but after enough thought on the issue, I stay with the P11 simply due to its size.

Take the Taurus MillPro .45 for example, I'd certainly rather have 11 rounds of .45acp than 13 rounds of 9mm, but the compared size of the two pistols alone keeps this P11 on my hip everyday.

P-11 is a great little carry gun. Not fancy, but reliably, and accurately fills the bill. Was my main carry gun until I bought the PF9.

I was most impressed with the accuracy and pointability of that little gun. I think TurboFC3S covered it best above.

I'm 5' 10" tall, when I carry, I am able to make a M1911 Govt. disappear with IWB holster. Since I can carry the full-size m1911, I don't really need to consider a commander or officer sizes. I also have been know to carry a KT P32 in pocket holster. A SW 642 will soon become part of my collection btw.

Probably my body shape + KT design, but trying to carry a KT P11 on my waist makes that thick grip stick straight out. Way too bulky for pocket-carry either. Different guns for different people.

This is why I always roll my eyes when people ask for "best" carry gun or "best" CCW... fanboys aside, choosing self defense pistols for use and carry is as individualistic as buying shoes.

For the same size gun, you would be much better server with a G26. My P11 was 100% reliable, but after each range visit, I found myself removing burrs from the slide. The triggers flat out suck:barf: But again, 100% in reliability. Shoot one if you can, before you buy, I had a hard time not shooting low with any KT model I've owned.

FWIW:

I had a P11 a few years ago and it was always reliable, and at self defense range was accurate enough.. Beyond 7' or so I couldn't hit the broad side of the barn, from the inside, with it.

Pulling the slide back was like pulling sandpaper against sandpaper and I had been spoiled by other more expensive pistols so never could get over the gritty slide action and poor accuracy beyond self defense range.

But having said that, I sold it for just what I paid for it, it never faultered once, and it was certainly worth the price...

For someone who doesn't want to put a lot of money in a compact 9mm pistol I think the KT P11 or PF9 are very good choices.

Just personal opinion, no offense to those who might disagree.

I've had my P11 for 4+ years. It has been carried quite often but not every day.
I can't recall any failures of any kind with this gun. Very reliable
When I got mine it was only about $200 NIB.
It ain't pretty or fancy but it does what it's supposed to do and for a really good price

CWL, I got you on the grip. Plus, 1911s are a lot slimmer than many people realize - slimmer than the P11 for sure. So that also depends on how high or low you wear your pants, seeing as the 1911 is longer.

JDGray, having handled a G26 I can't say I agree that they're the "same size." The G26 felt much wider and blockier to me. Although I do think the G26 would be easier for most to shoot than the P11.

Before I purchased my P11, I had both pistols in my hand, side by side on the counter, they are very "close in size":neener: Wished I'd sprung for the G26, as I would still have it today. I carry a 3" Kimber, and its way thinner then the Block and P11:)

I purchased a P11 just after 2000. Its compact enough to carry in my backpack or car and will chamber anything I've shot thru it. Recoil is tough though so it's not a range gun.

Im happy with the purchase and would buy again if needed - I did get the 12 round magazine.

I have owned several p-11 pistols. All have been reliable guns. Still own one that I occasionally carry in the front pocket.

I tried one out. I couldn't shoot the thing worth a damn. I had trouble hitting a man sized target from 8 yards out. Closer, and the shot would be somewhere on the target, just nowhere near where I was pointing. I can knock in 6 shots on the X-ring from 10 yards out with a Smith airweight DAO, but I figured this thing would be too much work to master.

I have the P-11 and LOVE it BUT, today I bought the P3AT. It is a Great, SMALL little pistol. SUPER easy to conceal and packs 7 rounds of .380 punch. If conceal-ability with more than 2 rounds capacity is your goal,, the P3AT is the answer. If you want good conceal-ability with real firepower, the P-11 is the bomb! 11 or more rounds of 9mm in a small, light package and a lifetime warranty makes this one my daily carry piece. The P3AT will be the wife's daily concealed carry gun. I MAY use it as a back-up to the P-11 every now and then as well.

The PF9 is single stack so it is thinner than the P-11 and it has a MUCH better trigger..

I don't own either, but have fondled both in a gun-shop. What makes the PF9 have a "MUCH better trigger..." ?

Not questioning your assertion, I just want an education on this.

Thanks,
Les

wrs840, the P11 is just plain known for having a rough trigger. It's not crisp, requires break-in, and is both long and heavy on the pull. I think the PF9 just has less distance to pull and is a pound or so lighter, too.
