you guys are really selling me on these ruger sixes. How do these 'sixes' handle recoil compared to the gp100? I heard they have more recoil&flip with the magnum loads.

anyone know the exact weight differences? or bore-axis differences?

thanks

I don't know the exact weight difference but the Sixes are a notch lighter than the GP. They feel closer to a K frame magnum with maybe a few oz added. I've never had much problem with muzzle flip. They are just about the perfect size and balance for .357 magnum loads.

I bought my Stainless Security Six new in 1984. It is the last gun I will part with.

The Ruger Speed-/Security-Sixes are indeed wonderfully nostalgic revolvers. They're better guns than their S&W counterparts because of their designs, and Bill Ruger said he never made a dime off the Security-Six. At a time when the Smith 66 was going for far more than its retail price, almost anyone could get a Ruger. It was more than ten years after I bought my first one that I ever saw a blued model, and that, I suspect, was because most people with stainless models just weren't selling them.

The heavier 686 Smiths and Ruger GPs are astoundingly good guns, but neither will replace a "Six" by a long shot. Too much weight up front, which is great for the range, but not for carrying out in the wilds. I want a light barrel that can be brought on target rapidly.

The heavier barrels will stay on the target better, but as I said above, the lighter barrels will pick up a target better. Still, it shouldn't be a problem staying on a target with a lighter barrel. I certainly haven't had a problem and I still prefer the skinny barrels over the heavy barrel Security-Sixes.

The 6-incher is the best field magnum I've ever seen.

Ruger Model 117 Security Six 4"

Hello friends and neighbors // I thought I'd find a Ruger Six club. I hope you have room for one more.

The Ruger Security- Six was on the back cover of the 1974 Gun Digest 28th Anniversary Deluxe Edition I got for my 12th birthday (along with a Marlin Model 60). Been drooling over .357s ever since.

My Father still carries his SS from the days when he was elected Sheriff in Penn.
Now I finally have one, purchased yesterday for $325.00 total, 33 years after manufacture.

Sturm Ruger ---Model 117---Security-Six--- 4" ---6 shot---.357/.38---adjustable rear sights---shipped in August of 1977---153prefix.

Even after thirty three years the metal was still too sharp so I smoothed the trigger edges but left the middle raised. I also stoned the underside hammer and cylinder rear edges.
The range did not have Hogue rubber grips in stock so I put on a couple of rubber inner tube strips for the days shooting.(a tip gleaned from THR) A little "Wet Shine Pink with Diamonds" finger nail polish on the front sight and off to the range.

I mixed it up betweem 15' and 25' my S&W 6" Model 586,.357, my S&W 1 7/8" Model 442 .38+P , and the SS 4" using .38 special 158gr. LWC

Then got down to business with the 158gr. JSP .357. These are the last six from the Ruger Security-Six at both 15' and 25'.

I did not even get in the yellow at 25':scrutiny: but you gotta love the 4 leaf clover group.

I'm looking foward to reading the Ruger Six club thread as completely as the 442 club thread and learning a few more tips.:D

Yup, the Sixes are great revolvers and tough as all get out. I have a few myself.

atlantic, thst sure is a fine looking Six.

Wow...resurrecting old threads has really become popular -- and it's thrown me off more than once, but that's what happens when there's a search feature and a popular gun like these Rugers.

I can't add to what's here, except to add that the skinny grips on this gun are horrible, but very photographic. At the time the guns first appeared, the S&W 13/65, 10 and others had those same types of narrow police grips. I kept mine on my gun for well over a year -- until I fired my first .357 -- then I bought a pair of Pachmayrs. I couldn't handle the full magnum recoil with the standard grips.

The guns are part of a bygone era, one which includes the S&W 19/66 and 13/65. Before these guns, .357s were overly heavy and cumbersome; afterwards they went back to being heavy and cumbersome. The 4-inch S&W 686s were more robust, and police did carry them, but they were significantly heavier than the lighter-framed magnums and, while they were better on the range, carrying the suckers in the field was a royal pain. The medium-framed guns had been so popular that the 19s and 66s continued for some time, but Ruger screwed the pooch and replaced the "Six" revolvers with guns far bigger and heavier than they needed to be.

Those of us lucky enough to have latched on to the earlier Rugers are the lucky ones.

Helllo friends and neighbors // Great read

Confederate thanks for post#80 Perfect break down, adding it to my Fav list.

Yep I try to search first, always some forgotten wisdom to be resurrected.

Good Idea Cosmoline, Ruger Sixes have proven reliable for decades and should have a club here, even if they do need a little extra grip.;)

What was my first stop after the Boulder DMV, when my newly minted 21 year old driver's license was still warm... ??? :uhoh:

That's right- To the gun shop to buy that nearly mint blued Police Service-Six that I had been eying for months at $185! :D

The bar came later that night!

The Ruger is not as minty anymore, but that's OK- it saved my dad's life by stopping a mountain lion attack!
