Good 9mm handgun that can "do it all"?

Wow, love these posts. The original poster is looking for suggestion on firearms that other people would recommend. People end of taking it as a chance to dismiss other people's post, just because of personal preference. Should be left up to the OP to review what other's have recommended as a firearm to suit his needs, and then take the chance to handle and shoot, which one he thinks is best upon other's suggestions.

For a modern firearm, I have personally shot S&W's and found that the Sigma series shot fine, but had an extended trigger pull and only operated in DAO. The weapon shot very well, and fed a variety of ammo, and the price tag for a new or like new one is well within the budget. The market has inflated prices quite a bit, but I have also fired from the S&W M&P line, both the .40 S&W and .45 ACP calibers. I preferred the 45 over the 40, and found the trigger pull more crisp than that of the Sigma line, it shot very well, the adjustable backstraps were a great feature offered to fit different size hands, and also has the option of adding Crimson Trace Laser grips. Not sure one of these could be found in your price range new from the store, however, could probably find a quality used one locally, or on a online auction site such as Gunbroker. Haven't fired much of the other pistols, but sure that they can offer you a great product to fit your requirements and you can afford either new or used.

Good luck in your search, and hope you post your new handgun, whatever it might be, when you purchase it. :)

Accurate and easy and safe to tote.

Just my personal 2c, DO NOT buy a gun with a manual safety. Buy one with a decocker, and train to take your first shot DA. A manual safety is too much of a liability under stress, a factor that people always underestimate. IMHO, they also contribute to a series of bad habits in gun handling generally. Take a look at a SIG P226/P239, or even an import P6/P225. Solid, reliable, accurate, and with a SA/DA/Decocker or DAO, will teach you proper gun handling from day one.

My XD-40 has nearly 5000 rounds through it without a single malfunction. My CZ PO-1 has not had a malfunction since break-in (first 200 rounds). They weigh about the same. The XD is a striker-fired weapon that provides the same trigger pull every time. The trigger breaks in very nicely, although it is a little spongy for some people's taste. The CZ is DA/SA with a very nice SA trigger and a somewhat gritty and heavy DA pull. Between the two, I would give the accuracy edge to the CZ and the reliability edge to the XD. Both are excellent guns.

Glocks are fantastic guns with impeccible service records, I just don't care for them. The grip angle feels wrong in my hand, I don't like the trigger and I don't like the way they feel when they fire (they rattle too much). In other words, they are just not my personal cup of tea.

All around favorite is Glock19, but there are other good options - XD9, SR9 etc.

But Glock is more versatile choice. You can by a Volvo (Sig226) , Jeep SUV (HK USP) and Harley (Kimber) or to get Landrover 90 or Toyota 4x4. Glock is the last two.

Right because the BHP and the 1911 are such liabilities under stress.

Complete and total absurdity! :banghead:

Manual safeties are liabilities for people who don't actually train with their guns. The thumb safety on my 1911 comes off as it is clearing the holster. I don't even have to think about it any more.

IN RESPONSE TO SARGUY. i WAS POINTING OUT THAT ANY FOREIGN OBJECT THAT GETS INTO THE TRIGGER WILL CAUSE IT TO FIRE, GLOCK CHANGED THE DESIGN OF THEIR BOX BECAUSE OF THIS, A TRIGGER BLOCK IS MARKETED TO PREVENT THIS. A MANUAL SAFETY IS SOLD ETC, I PERSONALLY TAKE MY WEAPON FROM MY PANTS POCKET WHEN I DRIVE AND SLIDE IT IN MY POCKET WHEN I GET OUT. I DO NOT HAVE TO WORRY IF CHANGE, POCKET KNIFE ETC WILL GET IN THE WAY OF THE TRIGGER.

...if you are going to carry in your pocket, at the very least don't have other garbage knocking around in there with your gun. It's a bad idea on so many levels.

mr PARKER THE LAST THING I WILL SAY ON THIS SUBJECT IS THAT I LIVE IN AN IMPERFECT WORLD. SO DO WOMEN THAT KEEP GUNS IN THEIR PURSES ALONG WITH THEIR GARBAGE, PEOPLE THAT PUT THEM IN GLOVEBOXES WITH THEIR GARBAGE, NIGHT STAND DRAWERS FILLED WITH GARBAGE, MY MAIN POINT TO START WITH IS SAFETY FIRST AND A S&W 3RD GEN PISTOL PROVIDES THIS LEVEL OF SAFETY WITH A HIGH LEVEL OF QUALITY. RESPECTFULLY

what you need is a compact frame lightweight pistol with some good ammo. that is a good base, because you can use it for carry and it isn't so tiny that you have problems with ammo capacity. then you can branch out to brands.

try this site called www.best9mm.com, and you can look around, it has one page of full frame 9mm guns and another with compact frames.

Another Glock 19 vote here. If I could have only one pistol it would be the 19. As it is the 19 and a newly acquired G34 are the only pistols I own still getting use.

Greg,

You said you have fired a G17 and XD9 at the range.

IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, I strongly suggest that you find an opportunity to fire a G19 and/or G26, and XD9 Compact and/or sub-compact, and as many others mentioned here as you can before deciding.

There is very little in life that is more personal or subjective as handgun choice -- what works very well for me may not be appropriate for you at all, and vice versa.

Figure out what works for YOU. :)

Or, if you can't do that, just go with the G19 -- it's the best choice anyway. :D ;)
