They can HURT me, but they CAN'T kill me...PERIOD; this should be your mindset in any assaultive encounter.

After that, "I'll do whatever it takes to win and go home to my family/girlfriend/cat/etc...PERIOD."

Never give up, even if you get hurt or the assaulter(s) get(s) you on the ground. Better yet, start now, today, learn how to grapple. You'll have some bad guy screaming for momma. Preparation and proper mindset are more than half the battle. You're not totally relaxed except in front of your television, in your home, with your favorite firearm close at hand. Be ready...things have gotten a tad desperate, and the chances of becoming a victim probably have risen from a year ago. Although as of 2005, when we enjoyed the lowest crime rate in property and violent crime since 1900, this recession/depression and double digit unemployment (really around 15~17%), will make people desperate. Be ready.

This is what makes the question of effective caliber so difficult for me.

I know that no matter what hits me, Im going to be shooting back/fighting back, unless the muscles wont move when I tell them to. I just have to hope the other guy has less will power.

CNS Hit

99% of handguns are inherently underpowered. A handgun is for emergencies you don't see coming. Realistically, if you keep that mindset (it's a good one), the only things that will stop you are a CNS hit or you bleed out.

Huh?

Unemployment is up but I don't see any link to a massive increase in crime rate due to it, where I live at least. Could you link me to some evidence to suggest people are going crazy out there? I appreciate your contribution of self defense mindset but your outlook seems paranoid to me.

Fear mongering is not permitted here. In fact violent crime has been dropping for the last couple years. There is 20 years worth of UCR data at this link: http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2008/data/table_01.html

Discussions on proper mindset and never giving up in a fight are welcomed here. Fear mongering for whatever reason is not permitted. Strategies and Tactics is a serious forum and members shouldn't make false statements in order to stir up emotions.

Mr. White there's is one big hole in any crime stats especially those the FBI puts out and that is the fact that they get their Data from strickly voluntary Polls sent out to Police Agencies and many choose to not participate in these Polls or fudge the numbers when they do .

I Have been told by officers in one Missouri city that I have known that are as high up as Captain on the force that it is and has for years been listed as one of the Safest Municipalities in St. Louis County for years when it actually has had a considerable drug and gang related violence/general crime problem for many years yet they never report factually Data to the FBI or News outlets because the Politicians don't to hurt the cities reputation .

Theres a Old saying when it come to anything coming from the Government "Figures Lie and Liars figure " .

Anecdotally, I've been receiving notifications of crime events at the University of Washington for the past couple years. There's an armed mugging every 5-7 days. They're typically where you'd expect -- near the student housing at 2am. However, the recent trend has been to hit the major campus street (University Ave), even during the day.

Hooray for a gun-free zone, eh? I'd just yell. Even if the guy has a pistol, no threat on his end trumps a half-full street full of bystanders. I'm dumbfounded a guy got robbed at gunpoint yesterday morning at 8:30 on the Ave, but apparently so.

EDIT:

Big01, while you can make that unfounded claim, have you looked at the research methods used for that study? There's plenty of other research on crime out there. Some coming from victim surveys, some coming from prisoner surveys, some coming from conviction rates, some coming from arrest rates, etc. Colleges, security firms, independent analysis, and government sources all conduct them for one reason or another. If there were some whitewash going on, it'd be a monumental conspiracy to defy imagining.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a recent spike in crime. Most of the social science out there would predict it. One theory regarding the dropping crime rates would be our exploding inmate populations, and recently several areas have capped out on their capacity. So you'd expect a steady or rising crime rate from that without regard to social factors.

The Dark figure of Crime

What you refer to as unreported crime is collectively known as the Dark Figure of Crime. We can't know the exact %, but criminologists suggest it is somewhere between 50% and 60%. Official crime data is obtained from the FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR). Agencies voluntarily report their crime stats to the FBI. The reason we know more than half of crime goes unreported is the National Crime Victimization Study (NCVS). A new sample is collected nationally every year and the survey begins. The survey process takes 3 years. Everyone inside the home over 18 years of age is surveyed every 6 months for a period of 3 years. The results of the study are collected and analyzed by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The results of the NCVS don't match the results of the UCR leading criminologists to believe that over half of all crime is not reported.

Was there really any need for the hyperbole? I never said that. If you want to think I'm paranoid that's OK. However, don't mischaraterize what I write.

All you have to do is remember the LA Riots in 1992, to realize how quickly society can break down.

I lived in LA during that. I'll never forget it.

False Statement

Where did I make a false statement?

And this one is done! We aren't going to have a thread full of hand wringing, panicked posts about how the crime rate is going up and we all should stack magazines, starighten the pins on our grenades and hunker down when there is no credible research to support it. This is THR, not ARFCOM or Glocktalk. We have standards here.
