2 killed, 2 wounded in shooting at Oak Creek hotel
Gunman surrenders after shooting girlfriend, others, then taking hostage

Posted: Nov. 5, 2004

A man armed with a fully automatic weapon shot and killed his girlfriend in a hotel room early Friday morning, then killed an onlooker and wounded two other guests in a hail of gunfire, police said.

After holding a hostage for roughly 30 minutes in a room on the third floor of the Comfort Suites, 6362 S. 13th St., the gunman surrendered to members of the Oak Creek Police SWAT Team.

Police Chief Thomas Bauer said the assailant, reportedly wearing body armor, fired 30 to 40 shots down two hallways on the hotel's third floor. He sprayed bullets at the guests who had left their rooms to investigate the initial gunfire.

The slain girlfriend is from Milwaukee, and had called a family member to be picked up at the hotel prior to the shooting, Bauer said.

The second victim, identified by a business associate as Anton Uebelhoer, had been staying in a room adjacent to the initial killing.

"He was executed in close proximity to the shots," Bauer said.

Heinz Sommer, chief executive officer of Krones Inc., said Uebelhoer is a 43-year-old business executive from Regensburg, Germany, who served as vice president of North American sales for Krones A.G.

Uebelhoer had a wife and 5-year-old twins, Sommer said.

He traveled to Milwaukee on Thursday night, and planned to participate in sales meetings and a trade show in Chicago next week, Sommer said.

"He was a very friendly, hard-working, outgoing person," Sommer said. "He was not only a very valuable member of our company family but he was a friend to all of the people who do work with him."

Both of the wounded hotel guests were taken to Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital.

The barrage in the hallway started about 2:25 a.m., moments after the man allegedly killed his girlfriend in the room they had shared.

After the initial bursts of gunfire, the man took a hostage and entered the hostage's room on the third floor. From there, he called a local television station.

Workers at WITI-TV, Channel 6 forwarded the call to police, who already had been alerted by several 9-11 calls from the hotel.

Bauer said a police officer on routine patrol was in the hotel parking lot and responded immediately to the onslaught.

During the course of the negotiations that led to his surrender, the gunman from Milwaukee's south side acknowledged what he had done," the police chief said. Bauer described the suspect as resolute, and somewhat cooperative, while being held in the Oak Creek police headquarters.

Officers recovered two guns at the scene. Bauer described one as a "fully automatic weapon," which would typically describe an illegal assault rifle capable of constant fire like a machine gun. The other is a handgun. The magazine from the larger weapon was empty, Bauer said.

Robin Martin, 41, of Forestville, said he awoke between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. and opened his door on the third floor to investigate a noise.

"Half a dozen guys in SWAT outfits, automatic weapons and sideearms were in the hall. It scared the hell out of me," Martin said. "One of the men said, 'Sir, shut the door.' I did so immediately."

Mike Bonhan, of Morton, Ill., said he heard the initial gunshots, and a man scream "I've got a gun."

Bonhan, who was staying with his wife, Stacy, opened his door on the second floor and saw a police officer with a shotgun, who directed him to go back in his room.

A couple hours passed, and SWAT team members visited each room about 5:30 a.m. to check on the safety of guests, Stacy Bonhan said.

"It was kind of nerve-racking," said Stacy Bonhan, who added that the couple never feared for their own safety. "I'm glad my kids aren't here."

Tony Henderson, 33, of Atlanta, said he awoke about 3 a.m. to hear "police running around." He said police told him the shooter had a dispute with his girlfriend who was staying at the hotel.

Bart Winkler, 20, a junior at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, was staying at the Comfort Suites with his parents and three brothers, one of whom would be participating this weekend in a soccer tournament. Winkler said the guests on the first and second floors included the soccer team from Fond du Lac High school.

He said he never heard the fire alarm which he had been told was pulled by the shooter. It wasn't until SWAT team members banged on his door at 5:30 a.m. that he was aware there was a problem at the hotel.

"They came in, it kind of freaked me out a little," he said. "It was pretty scary after I found out what happened."

I wondered if that was a legally registered full-auto or not.....but I highly doubt it since this guy was convicted in 2000 for conspiracy and sentenced to 30 months. Body armor and full auto in one story, just great, all we need to help our gun cause in Wisconsin and Milwaukee. But as we know, this was a felon that did the crime, and we all know gun laws don't affect time. 2 day waiting period prevent this?? nahhhh.

Frankly, I think it would have been worse for RKBA if the weapon had been a legal semi-auto ... the type that was banned under the AWB. The the antis could say "I told you so." Now, when they start with the inevitable "I told you so"s, the legitmate response is "Whoa, the gun was illegal before the AWB, it was illegal during the AWB by virtue of pre-existing legislation, and it's illegal today. The AWB has nothing to do with that type of weapon. Stifle yourself."

I like that it appears that the author of this article recognizes that the information recieved isnt necessarily gospel. It seems that Tom and Linda may actually be aware of how much dissinformation surrounds weapons, even when that information comes from law enforcement. Kudos to them for being ACTUAL reporters.

Last year there was some shooting at a university (Ohio, I think). At first they said there was a "machine gun" involved. A few hours later, that got downgraded to "assault weapon". Next day it was revealed it was a regular handgun. I'm guessing this follows a similar progression. Frightened people can't count rounds well, or tell the difference between full-auto and fast semi fire.

It will be interesting to find out if this is a legally owned and registered machine gun. To my knowledge, since the requirement was implemented to tax machine guns back in the 30's, there has only been one incident of someone using a legally owned and registered machine gun to commit a crime.

Correct. Case/Western Reserve University.

The victim had no chance to defend himself. State Universities are "no carry" zones. :fire:

The shooter, of course, was very careful to obey the law.

The victim, if a CHL (I don't think so) could have left his gun in his vehicle.

Our legislators love us. :barf:

Locally, we had a shooting with a "high powered assault rifle" a few years back. Turned out to be a handgun. Maybe a .22....

Our media love us too.... :barf:

You gotta wonder about people who hear gun fire and go to see where its comming from.
