Well, I was in the market for a used 870 Police...then I saw DHart on shotgun world and ordered a 24899. I figured why not get this beauty and go new. I will get it engraved "Deputy (insert my last name)"

Got the extension too!

Guess I should update... my gun is here.

And I LOVE it!

If you decide you want one... simplest thing is to call Linda, tell her Don H from the shotgunworld forum sent
you and tell her you want a Remington 870P 24899. Linda is a Remington Law Enforcement Distributor and
has direct access to LE products. She knows exactly what you want and their price is special to forum members
mentioning my name: $459.00 plus 24.00 for UPS shipping/insurance for a total of 483.00! Deposit is $200.
I think that's a steal in today's market. And Linda is a superb professional to work with.

AUN... well... actually, I'm busy reducing my collection... I have let go of quite a few guns already, and only buying just a very few carefully selected new ones. Kinda enjoying a shotgun tangent right now.

This 870P is so gorgeous, it's almost too gorgeous to shoot. :uhoh: But I'm getting past that! I'm shooting it, but taking very good care of it at the same time. I have other guns that can be called in for the dirty work. ;)

most of us who post here frequently I think find ourselves pondering shotgun purchases when other guns really fill a more pressing need...and still the scattergun is there.....begging to be bought.....

For me, the scattergun is an essential. It is my weapon of choice for HD. At in home distances, a few well-placed loads of 00 Buck is likely to be quite decisive. Of course I have some other firearms at hand as well.

This is my go-to shotgun for bumps in the night. It wears an E-series light in a CDMGear MOD-C clamp since this picture was made. And I'm not using the sling anymore. 8-shots of 00 Buck goodness on tap in short order.

That said, my lust runs hot for the blued/walnut 870P. ;)

Can't wait to shoot some 00 flight control wad shells through this sexy beast...well I also can't wait to get the gun!

Nice.
I just snapped up a 20 year old 870 Police model that is Wingmaster blue with wood stock and rifle sights.
The ffl guy bought several from an auction for ffl's only from the Minnesota State Police and this thing looks as if it has been fired very little and the blueing and wood is almost mint.
I really like the rifle sights on the gun and prefer the nicer blueing to the parkerized version.
I have no intentions of letting this beauty go.

Heeler... let's see some pics of that beautiful old Police-master!

Dhart,I would love to but I am a dinosaur when it comes to computers and on top of that I dont even own a camera.
Even my cell phone does not take pictures.
I would not even know where to begin on how to post pictures.
Sorry.
Fwiw I also picked up an 8 shot Winchester 1200 Defender that was built in 1978 and is in near new condition.

Haha, good point. But least we forget the terminal ballistics of 9 32cal pellets inside a popcan diameter hole on a bad guy!

Oh man, the 8-shot Defender is probably my #1 go to shotgun. Much as I love the 500 and the 870P... the 8-shot Defender really makes the most sense in a defense application. I've got two already and just bought a third to permanently wear a birdshead grip (generally I much prefer a short LOP stock, but the birdshead is good for limited applications, like very close quarters or when you need the gun to be as short as legally possible. Requires a fair bit of practice to shoot well also. I would only consider it at close, in-room, distances, though I can hit well with it up to around 10-12 yards. I consider it a decent choice as a travel gun where it can be handled fairly well inside a vehicle or as a motel-gun.) With the Winchester 1300/Defenders no longer being made, I'm valuing them ever more highly. The three I bought I found all of them on GunBroker: one was still NIB and the other two were like new. They're out there to be found if you want one.

Mine's an express, smooth bore barrel with rifle sights. Wood stock, whatever crappy finish they put on express shotguns. It's served me well for over a decade. I bought it used ($150), gave it a good cleaning and put it in the patrol car. I take it out and shoot skeet with it occasionally, along with the regular qualifications.

I tried the 7-shot extension, but didn't like it, so I took it off.

DHart I also found my 870 police and 1200 defender on GB.
Better yet the Defenders owner lived in my same city so we did a FTF which saved me the shipping and ffl fee.
It was a win win.
Ever so many moons or so I am afflicted by a buying sickness and just could not pass these two up.
I had honestly been looking for a clean example of an 870 police that was blued and with rifle sights and with a wood stock which appears somewhat hard to find in the three catagories I mentioned so when I stumbled on it I bit.
I have to admit for a personal defense gun that Defender really has a feel all it's own and for my body frame just throws up and points so well that it's hard to describe.
It's just that natural for me.
I like it's lighter weight as well.
Mine is a wood stock version and the other reason I bought it is that it was a true Winchester and not a USRAC gun which may or not mean anything to someone else.

i have long had the Signess but this past year has been a shotgun year for me. i was on my way to a 12 step meeting for gunaholics but stupidly brought my checkbook with me. i stopped at a gunshop and bought a new 870P. most recently after being swayed by DHART and his beautiful pictures of his new 870P... i "out of the blue" found my way to GunBroker and fell hard for a 1965 Remington Wingmaster with brushmaster 20" ic smooth bore barrel with factory rifle sights; in new condition. i bought that Wingmaster and here i am looking at his pictures again....

I think Remington has changed their policy of a warranty being voided by grinding down the dimples in the Express mode mag tube. I found a genuine Remington +2 blued extension in a gun shop, The only 2 choices were blued or parkerized. I opted for the blued version as it's finish was the closest to the aforemention crappy bead blast finish on the Express. There were instructions both on the back of the box and inside telling you what do as far as grinding down the dimples. I don't believe there would be instructions on a Remington product if it voided the warranty. There was NO mention of voiding the warranty by grinding down the dimples.

I ground them down with a Dremel after putting a paper towel in the mag tube to prevent particles from getting in the tube. I touched up the bare metal with some cold blue and the clamp covers the area as well. The +2 kit contained the extension, mag tube clamp and a replacement spring. No new follower however. After looking a a bunch of aftermarket extensions from Vang, Wilson and Nordic, I settled on the Remington because it was the only one with an extra barrel clamp. No matter what anyone might say, I believe this is a sturdier setup than an extension with no clamp. Simple physics IMO. If you banged the extension with no clamp, the force is all placed right at the extension coupling. The Remington spreads out the force because of the barrel clamp. I guess you could buy a clamp for the others.

I confirmed the part number on mine is the same as the extension on the Remington LE web page parts list. The blued version will exactly match the blued finish on the 870P if you want to add it. It will look exactly like a factory installed one. Another plus is the clamp has a swivel for a sling.

I was reading down to the bottom before posting a reply about the Defenders when I saw this. That is my first gun I ever owned and I still have it (luckily). 1200 Defender 8 shot 12 ga. 18" cyl. bore, blued steel, walnut stock. The only thing I've thought about changing is possibly a birds head grip. Bought it through Peter Pi when he was still in Detroit.

OK, how easy is it for an Express to be refinished to a high luster, polished blue? Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Big Mike... it would be much more economical to sell the Express for, say $250 perhaps, and buy a new 870 Police with the walnut & high polished blued steel for $480 or so. Then you'll have solid walnut furniture, a nicely polished chamber, police carrier dog spring, tool steel extractor, the extra assembly care and QC of a Police model, and a gun that is a genuine 870 Police, not an Express that's been sweetened up. Much better lasting value and resale-ability. These are likely to be the last of their kind rolling out of the Big Green factory and will surely appreciate in value.

7.62 NATO... great minds think alike. I have 3 Defenders now, one with wood furniture, another with Hogue 12" LOP OM stock, and a third dedicated to birdshead...

It would involve a complete refinish and polish. I'd be shocked if a *good* job could be done at a price that was practical. The underlying metal surface of the Express models is blasted with some kind of media (glass beads? something else?). Bringing it up to a good polish would be a lot of work.

Big Mike... I agree with John, a juicy refinish of an Express would be waay too costly to be worth the squeeze.

another approach.... find a nice, little used older Wingmaster and cut the barrel to 18". That would make a great defense gun with the added pleasure of walnut stock set and highly polished blued steel. You should be able to find one like this for around $350.
