My preference in pump shotguns is for blued steel and walnut furniture. And when it comes to Remington, I like this finish and materials combined with the "Police" feature set.

I recently set out to find such a Remington and learned that the model number is 24899. Here's what the gun looks like:

For me, all this needs is a mag extension for 7-rounds and that's it.

This model was offered with a special run late last year and
quickly sold out. I recently contacted over a dozen Remington LE
distributors and learned that none of them had the gun anymore,
but two of the distributors went the extra mile and did inquiries
for me to learn that there WILL BE A SPECIAL PRODUCTION RUN
of this gun in June-July 2010! Great news for me to hear.

I know there are others who share my appreciation for the blued
870 Police with walnut furniture... so for those of you who are
interested in acquiring one of these, I offer the contact info for the
two distributors who went the extra mile for me in getting this
information. You can pre-order with a deposit through either of
them:

Please tell them Don H. referred you.

*As for differences between the 870 Police Models vs. 870 Express models,
Remington published this information 6/30/05. As far as I know, the only
change is that the Police models now use the polymer trigger guard.

Important differences between Remington 870 Police and 870 Express shotguns

The 870 Express has been an important part of Remington’s offering to the sporting market. It was designed to meet a price point in the commercial market while still providing classic 870 functionality. All of Remington’s 870’s have interchangeable parts, even if they have cosmetic differences. It is also important to note that many manufacturers use the 870 Express platform for their Police / Combat models. Without exception, every manufacturer who utilizes our 870 platform serves to upgrade their system to a more efficient, street worthy platform.

While the 870 Express is still an 870, the best pump shotgun on the market, there are some very important cosmetic and functional differences between it and the 870 Police. To our customers in Law Enforcement, Military, Corrections, and Security, whose lives depend upon the unfailing performance of Remington shotguns, the Police modifications are of paramount importance. Synopses of the variances are provided below.

␣ 870 Police shotguns go thru a special 23 station check list – ranging from visual inspection, functional testing, test firing, and final inspection.

␣ All Police shotguns are assembled in a “special build area” at the plant in Ilion, NY. This section is secured and serves only to build LE and Military shotguns, with the same factory personnel working at that assignment each shift.

␣ All parts that enter the “special build area” are visually inspected by hand to ensure top quality and functionality.

␣ Due to heavy recoil in buck and slug loads, all 870 Police guns have a longer magazine spring which ensures positive feed and function.

␣ A heavier sear spring is used to generate a reliable, positive trigger pull between 5 and 8 lbs.

␣ A heavier carrier dog spring is used to ensure when the carrier elevates the shell, it will be held there until the bolt can push it into the chamber. This ensures positive feeding when using heavier payload rounds.

␣ Police shotguns do not have an ISS (Integrated Safety System) which is a locking mechanism on the safety of commercial shotguns. This type of locking mechanism can cause delay to an officer who needs the weapon but does not have the appropriate key. LE shotguns have the standard, proven, cross bolt safety.

␣ The fore-end on the Express model is longer and not compatible with many police shotgun vehicle racks.

␣ The Police shotguns utilize the heavy duty SPEEDFEED Stocks and Fore-ends. ␣ The Express model will not allow for the addition of an extension tube without physical modification to the tube and barrel, which can nullify the warranty.

␣ The Express model has a BEAD BLAST BLUE finish while the Police models utilize either High Luster bluing or Parkerization.

␣ The Express model utilizes a synthetic trigger housing while the Police models use a compressed metal housing.

␣ The Police shotgun barrel is locked down with a “ball detent” system in conjunction with the magazine cap vs. a lesser grade “synthetic magazine spring retainer” lock down as used on the Express system.

␣ The receivers used in Police guns are “vibra honed” to smooth out rough finishes and remove burrs before parkerization or bluing.

␣ Police shotguns use machined ejectors and extractors, as opposed to powdered metal cast which are utilized on the Express models.

Due to the recent upsurge in interest in HD/Tactical guns, and the large group with a preference for blued steel and walnut, Remington is "probably" going to keep having limited runs of these particular guns as long as they keep selling well. Just about any local dealer should be able to get their hands on one, unless they really go fast - which they may. Just judging by looks, it appears to be another major victory for the wayback machine.

mothermopar... I haven't looked at Ithaca, but I know they have a lot of fans. What should I know about them, as compared to the 870 Police, that would make me prefer the Ithaca? Please fill me in.

Furniture is American Walnut. Not sure on the chokes, but I think they're the RemChoke system. As corrected below.... fixed Improved Cylinder choke.

barrel looks like a mossy barrel peice of junk. That remington barrel doesnt look like mine(tank looking)

Neat looking gun though, just place a better barrel and it would do good.

Zack... The gun shown in the images is not my gun, nor did I create the images. The images are from an old (expired) internet sales ad and no doubt are not of the most "representative" quality.

Just what is it that makes you think it "looks like a mossy barrel piece of junk"?... "piece of junk" is a very harsh condemnation - what's with that? (As an aside, Mossberg shotgun barrels have served me -and countless others, in fact- quite well for many years, thank you.)

Are you referring to the colors of the finish? If so, that's most likely the processing of the pictures along the way, not the gun itself.

"Not sure on the chokes, but I think they're the RemChoke system. "

I have a parkerized 18.5 inch one made in 2008, they came standard with the Improved Cylinder bore at that point in time.

Thanks guys for correcting that... I have since learned elsewhere, also, that the 18.5" police models have IC choke.

Ordered mine today... very excited. Now to find a blued mag extension...

MSRP is $595 and I have been quoted an actual selling price of $480, including shipping, from one of the two sources I listed. Under $500 for a police model is a pretty good deal.

The glossy blued model was available as a standard version until 2 or 3 years ago. When they stopped selling them, many distributors unloaded them for around $400.

oh my gosh.

I paid 150 bucks for my 870 police that looks just like that.

Prices have SOARED.

Its a nice gun, but 600 bucks! No way.

Its a wingmaster with non-checkered wood and a 18 inch barrel. Its not a AR 15. Remington is asking WAY too much money in my opinion.

dom1104 you should go on Gun Genie and look up the 870P models now ... MSRP for some of the models is well into the $900's. I am new to shotguns so I figured that's just what they cost ... UNTIL everyone on THR started calling me crazy for considering purchasing something this expensive... haha

That is freaking inflation or something.

2 years ago I bought 2 870 Wingmaster 18 inch models just like this for 150 and 185. Used but you couldnt tell. just action bar marks.

they had 18 inch blued barrels not 18.5 which was interesting, and a feature of the police model I came to learn. Slightly shorter.

but they were easy to find.

600 for a pump shotgun even a wingmaster is in my opinion too much. You are in autoloader $$$ at that point.

I just got interested in an 870 HD gun again...

Now what I'd like to see is a PC or PD model, with that bluing, engraving and AA or AAA walnut with cut checkering.:)

Me too.

And I love this statement...

"All parts that enter the “special build area” are visually inspected by hand"

Don't they mean... visually inspected by eye?

Street price on this is in the neighborhood of $465 or so. Of course, some dealers will be stealers and ask waaaay more.

Police models are not all that easy to come by. While the differences between the Express and Police aren't huge, given the choice, I'd prefer the Police just for the machined small parts vs. MIM, heavier springs, and the extra polishing of all the surfaces. And it's likely that the Police models do get an extra measure of quality control.

New Express models are rougher and somewhat hampered by the dimpled mag tubes trying to prevent use of extensions (but the dimples can be removed with effort). Wouldn't want a gun that wasn't "visually inspected by hand" anyway. ;)

The parked police version with synthetic stocks has a much more practical finish for someone who subjects their shotgun to more abusive conditions, but some old school guys, like me, still want the blue with walnut just because that's what we love on guns which we don't subject to a lot of abuse.

I agree with Dhart, I ended up painting mine. the blue is just not durable for hunting / long term storage in a damp climate. He is also right that the action on a wingmaster is WAY nicer than the express.
