Another for the .41--like 1911 tuner, in a gun that's never been made: an L-frame S&W five shot .41 (a'la the 696 in .44 spec).

Erik M said... 357 - enough power to take out any wild game in my state.

How about those pesky black bears on Pine and Black Mountain? I would rather have my 41 mag strapped to my belt. :)

So where does that logic end? You can only load up the .44 Mag "so far" as well, so why not the .454 Casull or .500 S&W?

I do feel that the .357 Magnum is limited and somewhat anemic (not in and of itself but when compared to other cartridges) so my vote is for the .45 family of cartridges including the .45 Colt, .454 Casull and .460 S&W. Talk about an impressive range of performance from a revolver chambered for the .45 Colt and .454 Casull. I don't know how anyone could argue that the .44 Special and .44 Mag are more versatile than the .45 Colt and .454 Casull ... particularly if you reload for both.
perfectly said my opnion also i have a 460 i think it is the most versitale hand gun ever i can shoot rabbits with 45 colt(specal handloads) or grizzly with a 460 all in the same gun

I think the 357 is the best of the mag.. All you get with the other big bores is more blast and recoil. As the 357 was intended to be it is by far the best. In the right gun and I dont mean the L frame I mean the N frame it is the best round. It can be reloaded to great speed and is very powerfull. Downloaded to be a plinker and will kill any thing that walks on the face of the earth.
You dont need a 44 or a 500 to have a big wheelgun.
And I think the 41 mag is a close second place.

I have to chime in supporting the 41 Mag, I have 2 and at least one of them go to the range every time I go. If you have never shot one you are missing out..........

.44 mag by a mile. An amazing round and feels just like a big bore revolver should. The .357 is also formidable, but I am most interested in it in small, lightweight snubbies...the kind that make grown men whine like babies! What can I say, I guess I like recoil!

I always seem to go back to 357. I can get back on target quickly and it hits hard enough to get attention. It fits into smaller packages than the 44 and above so it is much easier to carry and conceal.

My old model 19 S&W still gets shot every time I go to the range. It currently has magnas and a Tgrip. Magnas or targets, nothing fits my hand better.

wow almost no love for the 327 fed or the 500mag(my favorite)
NOTHING puts a grin on my face like shooting my 500. I even made a leather cartrige belt w/holster so I could carry it around. Ridiculous? yes but it doesn't change the fact that I thoroughly enjoy it.

On a second note, I had no idea so many love the 41 mag. I had never really even considered buying one before, but I am seriously considering it now.

Captain Awesome,
If you buy a 41 mag. I hope you reload. If you do you will see that the 41 can and will do ANYTHING the 44 mag will do JUST BETTER.
Now don't get me wrong I do like the 44 mag, I just think the 41 mag is better.

Clearly, the 41 magnum has advantages for those that reload. Especially in the lighter bullet weights.

But each cartridge has its niche.

Both cartridges would seem to benefit from reloading.

Wouldn't the .44 magnum, which is available in 300 grain bullets, sometimes even 320 grain bullets be the better option against dangerous game?

Another vote for the .41 Magnum. Yes, I do reload and in truth I reload for all the big bore (over .40) revolvers I shoot. Cost and the ability to adjust the power of the round make reloading for these guns well worth the effort.

Yes.....and they go up to 355gr which can be driven to 1200fps in Ruger Super Blackhawks or anything with sufficient cylinder length.

Another one for the .41! My first was a used Old Model Blackhawk 4 5/8" in 1975.
I made a deal for my M1950 .45AR...reloading dies were part of the deal.
The first bullet I EVER cast was an RCBS 210gr SWC, and that was 1980.
Since then, I've gone through a couple M57 4"s, an M57 8 3/8, have an M58, and finally have my favorite of ALL, an M57 6". I've run over 10k through the 6", and probably 90% were over my chronograph.
I also load for .45ACP, .44 Mag, .357Mag, 10mm, .40S&W, 9mm, .45LC and my second favorite, a Blackhawk 4 5/8" .30 Carbine.
Not only is the RCBS an outstanding SWC, but I've a hollow-point version that really makes the .41 versatile.
Have fun,
Gene

.357 Magnum - When you care to send the very best...

I always thought that the .32 Magnum was a neat little cartridge that would make for a dandy trail or camp gun, and would be even better accompanied by a 7/8th scale Trapper carbine weighing in at around 4 pounds.

I've also wondered why somebody didn't chamber a Trapper for the .357 Maximum. Seems to me that would have been a natural marriage.

But, as usual...the gunmakers don't listen to me very often.

32 H&R Magnum followed closely by the .22 Mag
How is it that you have avoided the ravaging waves of rabid Kodiak Grizzlies that the rest of THR fights off on a daily basis?
If your next door neighbor has a .500 S&W, the grizzlies give you constructive credit. Paragraph 7-4-107b(2), Zombie and Grizzley Handbook.
