This may be my first post, but I have a dare-to-be-different project I wish to share.

I picked up an H&R Pardner Pump at a pawn shop for $98. I used to be a proud and stubborn Remington 870 fan, but the price was too good to pass up. I quickly realized it was just a clone, and a rather tough one at that.

I also have had a thing for tactical shotguns, trench brooms, and the like. So I put my Pardner Pump on the slab and started asking around. The first gunsmith I talked to more or less called me an idiot for what I wanted to do(needless to say he didn't nor will he ever get my business), so I decided to hit the internet and see what I could dig up.

I picked up a 2-inch mag extension(looking back I could've gotten a 3-shot mag extension since the barrel is long enough), shell holder for the stock, heat shield, and a remington 870 saddle-style scope mount, for a cheapy Tasco red-dot sight I picked up for cheap enough.

The installation of the mag extension and the shell holder went by flawlessly, but the heatshield required a rather careful hackjob to remove most of the vent rib. This is more of a badass yet cheap HD shotgun instead of a bird gun, anyway.

The Scope mount has turned into a pain in my backside. We're in the process of milling it to fit the slightly wider reciever.

Pictures will be posted once its completed, and I do plan on shooting this thing asap.

Sounds like a bit much, but if its your thing then go for it!

I also use a 870 saddle scope mount, by B-square. I too had problems fitting it to my Pardner pump, but milling wasn't necessary to make it work. My problem wasn't the receiver being to wide so much as not round enough at the top to match the scope mount. I simply used a big rounded file and worked on the aluminum mount until it was the right shape and the pin holes lined up!

Well, the rear hole lines up perfectly, but the front hole is JUUUST out of reach. About 2/32s of an inch too high, if that. I've tried filing it down, but it just doesn't get the job done, so out came the dremel.

Yeah, that's the exact problem I had. The trick is you have to file the underside of the mount, slanting towards the front. It will fit eventually, it just takes a lot of filing!

At least someone's had the same problem I'm having. I'll pick up some fresh stones for my dremel and get started on that in the morning.

and Pictures are due to come, don't worry about that!

Pictures were promised, and I will not fail to deliver.

I apologize for the cruddy picture quality, but the only camera I have is my phone.

Here's a closeup on the heat shield and the newly modified to fit Remington 870 rail mount.

Overall, I'm proud of it. 7+1 Capacity, with 5 more on the side, new red dot sight, and a heat shield that's more there to make me smile than anything else. She put on some weight, but I think its good weight. I'll take it down to the creekbed tomorrow and take some shots at some coffee cans full of water and see how she handles.

Interesting project. I'd have left the heat shield off and the rib alone(good place to mount open sights) but it's your shotgun.

Awaiting range report, thanks.

I would have skipped the heat shield and the cheapo RDS. I like RDS on fighting shotguns but if it was between a cheapo and a bead I'd take a bead. But those are just my preferences.

Doesn't help this shotgun was missing the bead sight to begin with. It was pretty much staring down the rail and hoping for the best.

The other style ATI heatshield with the rear clamp farther back holds on so much better. I'm not sure but isn't that model you have for the Mossberg 500?

To add to the picture content of this thread, heres my H&R Pardner Pump 12GA, first as it sits in my closet every day for HD,

And my hunting configuration, with sling, saddle mount, and R/GDS. I'm thinking of swapping the RDS for a 2-4x scope.

This gun is dead on accurate with slugs. I can pick off spent shells at < 50 yards, but haven't yet tried it at 100 or 150 yards. I'm going to bet its at least paper-plate accurate at those ranges based on how it does closer.

I dunno, I got it online and it said it would fit a Remington 870, H&R Pardner Pump, and the Norinco 98.

I took it to the creekbed and devastated a Maxwell House can at 20 paces. There wasn't enough of a target left after two shots to keep shooting, but I proved to myself that my modifications didn't hinder the performance any....

Though the mag spring didn't seem to feed properly at first. It may have hung up on something or maybe its just not used to the strain of 7 shells, but I'll figure it out.

Nice shotgun, by the way. I'm glad to see there's someone out there that doesn't believe the Pardner Pump is just a cheap 870 knockoff that'll blow up in my hands.

Don't mean to hijack, but what is the point of a heat shield on an HD gun? I assume that the only person touching the barrel after firing would be the BG or another unfriendly, so to protect them from burning themselves seems counter intuitive. If you were part of a fighting force it might be a different story.

Would you take the top front handguard off an AR used for home defense, just because you probably wont fire enough rounds to heat the gun up?

The heatshield keeps you from burning your hands while shooting a lot during practice. It also adds weight to the front of the gun, which I find improves the balance for me, and it protects the barrel from damage from dropping or smacking on stuff.

Also, it just looks damn cool.

you left out the part where it's yours so do what you want. It shows effort and more importantly I hope it runs well for you. Enjoy!

heat shields arent my thing but i understand your reasoning. was shooting my winchester 1300 defender yesterday and just 10-15 slugs through and it was fire hot.

i also got a pardner got it for $75 from a buddy, makes for an dead on slug gun with as cheapo reddot.
