I have an AR that I have pretty much mastered. It is rugged and lightweight. I have A2 sights and a single rail that allows me to interchange either a bipod or a TLR-2.

So im now looking for something else to master. I am thinking about going the following routes:

-M1A
-FAL
-MSAR E4

I want to set this one up to run both a non-magnified holographic sight like an EO-tech and a longer range scope. Both will be on throw lever mounts.

Any suggestions are welcome!

i would definitely take the msar cuz i think they are sweet looking. plus you don't necissarily have to start buying a new kind of ammo

...although it isn't called the msar stg-556 e4. There is the msar stg-556, and then there is the msar e4. I think the main difference is the mags, and the e4 comes in a whole bunch of different calibers. the e4 also takes pmags, and the stg-556 takes mags that only fit that gun.

Of those, I'd go M1A. FAL second. No interest in an MSAR.

Of the three I would probably go with the m1a, but why not get a different upper? Also, since you already have a semi-auto, why not look at a high end bolt gun? Just my opinion, reasonable minds may disagree.

I like 52grain's idea of a nice bolt gun.

Of the OPs listed rifles I would choose the M1A just because I like them.

How does one master a gun anyway? Just wondering what metrics you use to measure that success.

M1A would be my choice.

My attitude would be that since you have "mastered" the AR platform, it would be a platform to stick with. If you want a .30 cal, get an AR-10.

If you want another gun to play with for fun, go with a quality FAL.

Not really mastering, but I think I am ready to devote less time to it and more to a new firearm ;)

Id like a 308 very much. But I also see merit from the MSAR because it takes the same mags and ammo.

I agree. I watched part of a magpul video series at a friend's house and one line stuck out in my mind. The gist of it was that if you are excelling and shooting ragged holes on your drills, you aren't pushing yourself hard enough. Re-run the drill faster. Increase the range. I can't remember the entire one-liner...but it more or less said that you should practice until you fail if you want to push yourself. That really stuck with me.

That being said, if you want a 308...get an ar-10. I just traded a Kimber 1911 for a DPMS LR308 AP-4 and I am tickled pink. I really wanted an M1a, but I like what I ended up with.

The M1a is always a classic. I have owned and shot a number of M1a and played with an AR10 as well as a couple of FALs and H&K 91s. The M1a is more fun to shoot in my opinion and I do like the H&Ks. Had an Armalite AR10 that shot half min. with LC match but I couldnt feel the love. Of all of them my last choice would be the FAL. The H&Ks are great and fun to shoot....of course if anyone has a PSG1 they want me to test for them I am here for you.

MSAR

I have an msar and have shot the others. I love my msar but am thinking about a FAL myself. I think the question is what is the purpose of this selection? If its just for cool factor go MSAR. If you want a little more distance or power I like the FAL over the M1A. M1A's can deliver more accuracy but it takes a lot more work and I dont care for the way they handle and feel.
