Thinking of a FAL: Mag question

You can find mags around $20 at Whatacountry and Palmetto State Armory, but that's the best I've seen lately. The supply HAS dried up and prices have gone way up.

What didn't you like about the M1A and G3? Have you considered a .308 AR?

AIM has the metrics for $16 and I don't think you'll find anything at a lower price.

Hello all, as one person that no longer owns a FAL, I say if ya didn't like G-3 or M1A, a FAL might be just what the Doctor ordered, all the ones I've had were well ballanced and Yea, I've seen metric mags for about 15-20$ so thats not great but at least they are around and afforadble? A fal is a great weapon, I have owned a Metric fal, a Congo Model with Folder 916") and a few L1A1's and Clones, never was unhappy with any of them! $ situations and beaing Dealer always robbed them out of my Gun racks, but man do I kick myself for lettng go that metric fal 20" I had! Try one, Betting you will like it! DSA makes some fine US made ones and at times they are earier to find and can be had in metric and Inch pattern, if Possible, I try to stay with metric as mags are easier to find, and aa Little chwaper, Good Luck and let us know what youy find or buy?

New 30 rounders are coming out from DSA in a few weeks... I'm willing to bet 20 rounders will be a little cheaper in coming months or at least stay stable.

The ones AIM is selling are Korean knockoffs. I have some and they don't fit in DSA receivers. They fit in IMBEL and Entreprise, but don't reliably lock the bolt back. I don't recommend them.

Motega, what's the source of DSA selling 30 round mags? Sounds promising.

Bratch, I own a couple FALs and a .308 DPMS. The DPMS (308) is far more accurate and has lighter felt recoil. It's also less reliable so far. You can easily upgrade AR triggers, not so easy with a FAL. Ergonomics and manual of arms do cross over fairly well, especially if you operate an AR charging handle with only your left hand. DPMS 308 spare parts are readily available and not too expensive; same is true for Armalite AR-10 spares, which are mostly different in dimensions.

Basically, if you want reliability above all else, the FAL is probably the best bet. If you want best accuracy and trigger, the 308 AR is far, far ahead. The FAL has a lot of surplus parts still available, but it has little future, while the 308 AR platform is becoming more popular. I like both, but they are not interchangeable.

I have a M1A, A FAL, and a Cetme in the safe, the M1A1 hasn't seen any range time for a couple years. If I need an iron sight gun for competition I grab the FAL, for scope I grab the CETME.

My FAL is an older Ohio Rapid Fire build and is superbly accurate and reliable. It is probably my favorite .308 MBR platform. The ergonomics suit me very well and the firearm is well balanced. As noted the days of cheap surplus mags has passed but when you think about it 15 buck for new steel magazines is still a good price, have you priced M1A mags lately?

They have been saying this for months. I have several 30 rd. mags ordered and everytime I call them it "will be a few months, we don't know when". A few weeks? Maybe, but I doubt it.

Does anyone know of a place that has GOOD QUALITY FAL mags? I have ordered from two places, Sportsman's Guide and Royal Tiger Imports (Inter Ordinance). Both sent me junk in the mail for the price of quality magazines. Both advertised them as "very good" and SG even called them "like new". RTI sent a box of rust, and SG sent old, rusty, stripped magazines that had been painted black, on the exterior only, and in the assembled condition (they would look "very good" to "like new" as long as you never touched them or tried to use them --bait and switch, oldest scam in the book).
