I have been thinking about buying all my guns agian. I was robbed of everything, my grandfathers classic '66 .243 rifle, my dad's 22 single shot bolt action rifle that he used when he was a kid, and made the stock when he was a senior in high school, and it didnt even work, couple of shotguns and another 22 rifle. if you havent got the serial numbers and pictures put in a secure place, and if you dont have a safe, your asking for trouble. enough preaching.
I am looking to buy a remington 700 in a .308, i want a tack driver out to about 800 or so. I know i probly wont ever really shoot that far, but i want the equipment to be able if needed. What leupold scope would be best for hunting, but also practicing long range shots? I found a rem 700 .308 spsv for $525, is that a decent price and also does it being a varmit varient rifle make a difference? Any advice or questions to help is appreciated.

I don't know enough about long range shooting to answer your questions correctly, but I can say sorry to hear about your losses, hope they get the person(s) responsible.

Sorry about your unfortunate loss. Shooting at 800 yards is okay for fun and experimentation but is way too far for shooting at a game animal. In the hands of a really good shot, 300 to 350 yards is a possibility. but for the rest of us 250 is a long shot. Forget about small groups at ranges greater that that.

Anything past 350 and I need glass, with great optics 650 can still be in the MOA groupings. 800 is area of man with my weatherby .308.

myamoto,350yds is not as hard as people think.. i shoot my AR at 300yds a good bit and i've got pretty good. it just took practice first time i tried it was ugly calmed down worked on my breathing...1 hour later i had a 3 1/2" 5shot group (i kept the target i was very proud of myself) my point is is does not take 5 years and $10,000 worth of ammo to learn to shoot past 100yds just practice

thanks for the comments yall, unfortunatly my guns are probly in mexico now.
I'm in the country in SE oklahoma, so i can set up for long shots when shooting, and i understand the max effective range when hunting.

Sorry about your loss

I am a big fan of Remington 700 and Leupold. I like lower powers 2 or 3 for out to 2-300 yards, but shooting longer ranges I like to turn up the power. I would think something a long the lines of a 4.5-14 would work. The Varmint guns have bull barrels and wide forends. Good for bench shooting, not as great for carrying around. other than that lots of practice.
