Which out of these three competitors is the best handgun, and why?

All are chambered in 9, .40, and .45 (although I only care about the 9's and .40's- 1911's are for .45 ;) ). They're polymer, made by good companies and high capacity.

If you need best defined or best for what- YOU define it, and then tell me why you think that. Notice how I keep saying why? I want your opinions but most importantly I want to know how you got to your conclusions.

Ha - trick question. There is no best. Only what suits you and your wants the most. Best to you won't be best to me.

To be honest I'm not sure which one I like best. I've only shot glock 23's and 19's. And XD's. I like glocks track record but think the grip is an odd angle and don't care for the odd curvature. I like glock's trigger and reliable simplicity. I'm also worried that with their fame quality might decline. They seem to fat.

Smith and wesson I also worry about quality because they have a big name with the civilian market and people will buy it just for that S&W mark. I think they have a good ergonomic design; and the small grip insert feels great. The trigger feels lighter than glock, but it's a longer pull. It has a stainless slide and looks like it features other quality materials- it's a turn on.

I've always liked fn but nobody talks about their handgun. They look nice but I'm not a fan of their thumb safety that will put the hammer down when pressed down far enough. It looks like a decent design and I prefer it to the XD's- all said I hate XD's and regret ever buying one.

BTW- well aware there's no best but it sums up what I'm looking for and get's your attention. I also know "best" is subjective and depends on what the person likes. I just think saying best is better than saying which handgun do you like better or think will work better, or has worked better or maybe not even better but what you like because I know it's just your opinion based on your experiences or things you read and I'm looking for your thoughts and opinions/ observations because I'm interested in these handguns even though I like 1911's. Even if you don't like any which do you like "best"?
If none apply that's fine but I'd appreciate opinions on the subject guns and not just: I don't like any of them. but if one were to say that I'd be interested to hear why.

So what is "best" to you? And WHY?

To be fair, I've never shot an FNH. I'll probably end up with one eventually, but I love the Glock 17.

I have owned all three. The G17 and M&P9 were excellent weapons that never gave me trouble, there was certain things about them that I felt could have been improved.
I recently got hooked into the FNs. I was looking for a full sized .45 and ended up trading my G30 for and FNP45 USG......Holy cow! the pistol blew me away. I loved it so much a week later I scooped up an FNX 9 w/night sights to go with it. Turns out, I like the FNX9 even more then to FNP45 ;)
Here it is: The FNX9 has the ergos of the M&P, but with the best grip texturing of any poly gun. It has the it has the reliability and toughness of the Glock but looks great at the same time. The FNX has a better trigger, is more accurate then either and has full ambi controls.
Now two areas where the Glock and M&P can't even touch the FNX is: The first is the safety/decock system of the FNX. The FNX can be readied; traditional "half cocked" DA/SA or "cocked & locked" S/A or DA "safety on". The second is value, simply the FNX is more gun for less money than either the M&P or Glock.

I happen to love the FNP series....I have been a Glock shooter for years but the first FNP I bought hooked me. I bought the 45 and it seemed like I couldn't miss with it.. Since then I have also bought the FNP 9...

I would bet good money that all these guys who say it's no good have never even held one at the range, much less fired one..

I have only held the M&P, never fired one, so I won't be so arrogant as to give any opinion other than "it doesn't fit my hand well"...

Can no one read between the lines anymore and just answer a question? Thanks for your input though MikePaiN and tntwatt, I appreciate your honest and informative answers. I guess it's time to take this question to a more civil forum...

Can't anyone just learn to respect that life has flavors, and not everyone likes Butter Brickle? There is no straight answer. All 3 have their strong points, and all 3 have their weak points. All 3 are trusted duty pieces, and all 3 have opponents for duty carry.

About the only way to pick a clear winner would be to get a good sampling of the select firearms, put all the models thru torture tests against their respective counterparts, and see which makes/models are still standing at the end. Though I'd suspect that even if you sampled 500 of each make/model, the data would still be too close to make a definitive choice.

Besides, it sounds like you've already made up your mind on which is "best" and are just looking for vindication.

In your defense, you said" best of the Three" guns listed--- A fair question..

deserves a fair anwer. I would pick the Glock since it has been around longer and has a great reputation for reliability over time.

When you pose a flawed question and then ask people for opinions, you shouldn't be surprised to get non-favorable responses.

There is no such "best" of anything, it is completely subjective AND changes over time. It's like asking "what is the BEST color?"

People will always differ in opinion (unless you live in North Korea).

best

IMHO:
which guns have your shot and which one performed the best?

my hands are not configured to fire most 1911's, glocks, or M&P's. Very large palms, very short fat fingers. For my 9mm, there is nothing better for me than the CZ75B. Got both the SA and DA/SA, and they perform! For 45, the SA XD just flat fits, and I shoot it better than any other 45 I have tried. But it's not perfect - Won't feed SWC's worth a damn.

Just my $0.02 worth -best has to be decided by what works best for you.

Oh, for Pete's sake... the question/poll is NOT flawed. The OP has narrowed his choice between three brands/models and simply wants some intelligent input. What's so difficult to understand about that??

I chose M&P for its track record, features, and grip. Track record and grip require no explanation but features does... good balance, low center-of-fire, does have thumb safety, no mag safety (on the one I bought).

Caveat on the M&P (.45 ACP)... the mags are longer than most double-stacks because, in order to keep the grip narrow, they only made them 1.5 stack. Also, the 14 round mags really only hold 13 rounds. I haven't researched as to whether the other caliber extended mags have the same issue.

ETA: I can't comment on the FNP because I haven't handled one... but I don't like blocky Glock grips nor their odd angle.
