Anybody carry a knife while while also carrying a gun?

I always carry a knife except in prohibited places. Of late, I usually carry my trusty SAK and a Spyderco Delica. I would rather not carry a gun than drop the knife.

I have one of those mini Gerber Applegate/Fairbairn folders. 3" blade maybe? It is small, but handy, half serrated. Been carrying and using and sharpening it so much I think I need a new one, the shape of the blade isn't the same anymore. But it is good for all kinds of stuff, cheap enough if it breaks or gets lost no big deal, and tough enough to last. In a pinch, it would be better than most small knives for defense I suppose due to the design, but I mostly carry it as a tool. My defensive weapon is usually a .40 or 10mm mini Glock IWB.

CRKT M-21 strong side front pocket, Ka-Bar TDI weak side belt, Leatherman Juice weak side back pocket. Same knives, same carry locations, every day.

Yes I do have some knife fighting training.

And who provided this training, Young Grasshopper?
I've known some 14 year olds that have trained in dojo with knives and you may have been lucky enough to have had some formal training where making such a statement won't lead to embarrassment, but think carefully about the difference between formally training with an expert and messing around with a video or some amateur.

Our neighbor is a U.S Marine. He's a nice guy and whenever he can he teaches me knife fighting. He says it comes in handy. Me and him practiced with sharpies and it's really hard to inflict damage without recieving some yourself. Anyway I would really hate to get into a knife fight.

Besides I am not big on video games although I play them sometimes.

I carry a buck 112 most of the time just on my belt in its sheath, so it is not really concealed but I don't really care most of the time either. When I am hiking I sometimes carry a K Bar fixed blade.

That shows maturity for your age. I and probably all of us appreciate that.

I carry a small 3" fixed blade that was custom made by a friend. I carry a knife not so much for self defence, but for general everyday use. I all honesty my knife comes out of its sheath for one reason or another at least 6-7 times a day. Sometimes a whole lot more than that. Never know when it will come in handy.

I used to just carry a gun, but everyone complained about me shooting my packages open. I don't know why.

I really only stopped because I was tired of shooting holes in perfectly good gear. I know it's odd, but I decided to try a knife instead for many small tasks, and turns out, a knife really works! :) In fact, for string and letters, my folder may even work better than my Glock 23 or S&W 65!!!

main knife , small 3" fixed blade I made ( D2 steel drop point )

in coin pocket , John Lloyd custom baby bullet trapper

in a mission wallet , Strider CC PT and Boker + Gents lockback.

Certified gun and knife junky...

couple the above with a Colt Officers model and a Fenix light.... I am comfy.

Best part , just doing a pocket dump I can lose about 5 # :)

whenever he can

How regularly is that and how often do you practice?

I assure you that you're ahead of most folks, but without regular training followed by regular practice you're deluding yourself if you think that you're training. You need to focus on developing, refining and then maintaining a physical skill like this and you don't do it randomly.

Spyderco C07 either clipped on strong side front pocket or on waistband at SOB depending on how I am dressed. I have always carried this knife for the last 18 years or so. I know I have carried it daily even before I had a CHL.

I carry a knife regardless of whether or not I am packing a roscoe.

With the exception of airports and courthouses, I've had a knife of some sort on my person since about age 8-which was some time ago, to be sure. Hell, like a lot of the other denizens of this THR corner, I may even be found with more than one.

Since I'm lounging around the house at the moment, I'm very happy to say that I've got an early phantom by A. E. on me...

That's a very thought-provoking point. I'm sorry to say I haven't had any knife-fighting training (formal or otherwise), but if you wouldn't mind sharing, is there anything one can do to at least minimize incoming damage? Assuming you can explain this without showing it in a demonstration, I mean.

Short of that, is there a preferred area of the body one might use to absorb knife slashes that can't be avoided otherwise? Maybe using one's left arm (or right arm, if the person is left-handed) to try and deflect an attacker's knife?

Thinking about this makes me realize how screwed I would probably be if I did get in a knife fight, and really makes me want to go out and get some formal training on it.

Carry A Knife?

Why, no, of course not.

:D

I almost never carry *a* knife.

Five or six, sure. But "a" knife? Nah.

As I type this, I'm carrying . . . (let's see) . . . 1) Leatherman Wave, 2) EKA Nordic T8, 3) Buck Vantage, 4) Lone Wolf Paul Presto, 5) EKA/Wenger Executive Major, 6) Case Sod Buster Jr, 7) and one of those little Swiss Tech Utili-Keys.

When I take off my jacket, the last two above will go with it.

The "gun & knife" thing, for me, is a pairing of tools for disparate purposes. The gun is for self defense. The [strike]knife[/strike] knives are for steak and salad and fruits and packages and string and tape and mail . . . and whatever else needs cutting.

If I'm expecting trouble, I'm checkin' my maps for alternate routes and blendin' with the shadows and generally bein' somewhere else. If I can't "be somewhere else," then it won't be a knife doing primary SD duty.

It'll be my umbrella.

I use that at work.. " ask John if he has a knife we can borrow "...

" nope , I don't have a single knife on me "

:)

I always have at least one knife on me, and when I have a gun on me I typically have a folder in my strong side pocket and a 3.5" fixed blade at about 10 O'clock (my weak, non gun side)

A knife is an extraordinarily useful tool independent of its possible use as a weapon.

I almost always carry my SAK and usually a Klein Tools wharncliffe. Every now and then I carry my Vic Spirit.

I just picked up a cheap Leatherman Wingman, but I am undecided on what to do with it.

I really like knives, but it's difficult to rationalize their purchase.

I was taught men carry knives and a man without a knife isn't much of.

I carry three. One on the keychain, a small slipjoint in one pocket and a Spyderco Tenacious in the other.

Is your umbrella a single-shot 12 gauge? Or are you handier with a sword than with a handgun?

Many of us consider the stick to trump the knife as a defensive tool. Garry and I have this umbrella as well as canes.

The knife is the single most useful tool ever invented - you start carrying one (or more) and soon you can't understand how folks can get through life not carrying a knife. Oh, wait, I know how: they ask to borrow one of mine.

I bet most here have learned not to loan out knives willy-nilly, because folks who don't carry them have zero respect for them, and it's not so much the $50 you're out, you lose a friend.
