Do you carry a sheeple-friendly knife?

I carry a mini-Griptilian (now provided with a stud rather than a nylon tie) in one pocket and the Kershaw red Blur on the other side. The mini-Grip is for simple chores and sheeple friendly and the Kershaw is for those times I may need a larger knife or my hand is bothering me and I need the speed assisted blade. Off body carry I have the razor Superknife and a 4" Cold Steel Voyager (scares most sheeple).

I EDC a Benchmade 940 (green w/ bright blade) and haven't had any issue with sheeple although one guy commented that it seemed really sharp, ("you say that like it's a bad thing"). That said, I've started carrying a Schrade 34OT middleman simply because I hated getting tape and other junk on the BM. Nobody looks twice at the Schrade and it gives me three blade options depending on what I need to cut.

One of the reasons I carry a sheeple-friendly knife is that my EDC is a fixed blade Schrade Sharpfinger (modified into a neck knife) in my right front pocket. I carry a fixed blade because locking folders are banned where I live.

San Antonio, TX!

It's in the city codes. My understanding is that it's selectively enforced and generally ignored unless someone gives them reason to enforce it. Still, it's almost as easy to carry fixed blade knives as folders...

Me too, Dirty Bob!

A few years ago, I started carrying a fixed-blade A.G. Russell Deer Hunter every day. Wore it in the front pocket of my BDU's down at Fort Hood, and in my jeans. The knife was well-made, and cost 60 bucks, but it had an ugly, cheap-looking, black-plastic handle, and the blade was ridiculously thin (anti-Rambo-knife backlash). I got Harvey King to make one for me, of the same size and pattern, with beautiful ironwood scales, and with D2 steel an 1/8 inch thick. Unfortunately, I haven't yet found a sheath to carry it as conveniently as I could the Russell.

The one at the bottom of this webpage, #8, appears to be based on my knife, but mine has a 4" blade and is way purdier.:) http://www.harveykingknives.com/knife_gallery.htm

Cool!

That's a very pretty knife! I'm jealous, but I wouldn't dare carry such a nice knife in the same pocket with my keys.

My carry system is about as attractive as a dog's hind end, but it works! I attached the male half of a snap to the handle and the female half is on the sheath. The scabbard drops free when the snap is released.

My PC knife looks like a key and locks onto my keyring. It has useful tools on it, is inexpensive, non-threatening, easy to clean and generally nice to have around.

Perhaps one of our forum members can suggest a sheath maker...

Dirty B,

It is a purty young thing, but, man, I could really use that 200 bucks right now! Your carry system sounds pretty handy. I just attach some paracord to the sheath, and run it to a tiny carabiner on my belt loop.

Hi folks.

I guess it's appropriate that my first post here on THR is about knives, since I came upon this place from Bladeforums.

I do carry a sheeple-friendly knife. Sorta. But I EDC three knives anyhow, so it's not really a big deal. My sheeple knife is a stockman pattern knife that I got from Moore Maker, in Matador, Texas. But I also carry a Cold Steel Voyager, the one with the four inch blade, as well as a Leatherman Clip-it. I use the stockman when I need a shaving-sharp knife, and in situations where someone might freak out about my big scary knives, the Voyager when I need to have a knife in my hand quickly, or when I need to cut something that might screw up the edges on the stockman, and I use the blade on the Clip-it for nasty work like cutting wire, scraping battery terminals, et cetera.

How's that for keeping all my bases covered?

Idunno. I carry a Gerber Paraframe I clipped inside the inside of the front of my pants, and a matching Paraframe Mini visible clipped onto the outside of my belt, above my back pocket.
Few people ever see the larger one. Only people close to me even know I carry it, and they often forget. That one is for sticky situations. I do not try to hide the Mini. It is too small to scare anyone, even if it does look kinna "tactical." When I need to cut somthing, I use either the Mini or the Gerber Solstice multi-tool on my keychain.
I am a big Gerber fan....

Hmmm...

I guess I must be compensating for a lack elsewhere(thought I'd say it before somebody else did). My EDC is a Cold Steel Vaquero Grande.

I've carried it every day for 4 years now, and used it for anything from opening boxes to pruning trees. It's been a great heavy duty blade.
My left side knife is a Cold Steel Pro Lite Tanto Point(I guess I'm tactical, and didn't know it.). http://www.ltspecpro.com/prolitefolders.html
I keep a Leatherman Supertool on my belt, and a tiny Cold Steel Voyager with a two inch blade is hung on my key ring for small chores.

I carry a Benchmade 921. It seems kind of sheepleific where I live, and I'm not sure people could take the large blade (3.3"), so discretion is requred, but that's what the small blade (2") is for. With a blade that small people don't even seem to notice it's there. I've even used the blade on my Leatherman Micra in school before and no-one seemed to notice.

I carry a small knife for two reasons:

1. to be more sheeple friendly than my defensive knife

2. to save the edge on my defensive knife.

MY defensive blade is an Emerson SOFCK, and the other is either a Kershaw Chive or Scallion. Assisted opening, so they're not the most sheeple friendly, but the size makes them less "scary.'

Sometimes I do, it just depends where I am going, or what I am doing. My sheeple friendly knife is a stainless Delica, my non sheeple freindly carry knives are a FRN Endura 50/50 blade, and a stainless Police model Spyderco with 60/40 blade.

I always have my Leatherman, when anyone "needs" to use a knife that's what I let them use. So far it doesn't seem to scare the sheeple, most think it's cool.

For EDC depending on where I'm going and what I'm doing, I carry at least one each of the following. Some are for social situations and some are for hunting/fishing. :D

folding I have 2 MOD's, 4 Benchmade's, 5 Case's, 7 Buck's

fixed 5 Gerbers, 4 Buck's, a couple of misc boning knives

Nothing tactical about me, I carry a Case Copperlock. If that causes any sheeple to soil themselves, they probably deserve it.

Why a big Gerber fan?

If you're asking me, it's because I started using them in the early 70's when I was in the military and I've been carrying them ever since. I like the balance, feel, weight I've been using them for so long they're like an extension of my hand, arm and mind. I have some Buck knives that I use hunting but wouldn't use them for any kind of social situation if I had a choice.

My EDC isn't very sheeple friendly.

I originally carried a Benchmade/Emerson CQC7, but since I was working sales, and often had to pull out my knife to cut things in front of customers, I had to switch to something smaller. I got too many questions and odd looks.

So I switched it out for a CRKT KISS, which is about as untactical as they come.

I carried that for a couple years, until a party at a friends house, and there was a package that needed to be opened, and no-one could find a knife. I pulled out the CRKT, cut the string, and put it back. Several people gasped and gawked, and the hosting couple looked at each other, and the husband looked at the wife and whispered "just be glad he didn't pull something else out", (in refrence to my CCW, since he is 1 of 2 friends who knows about it).

Since then, I realized that no matter what the knife looks like, it is evil in some eyes.

So I carry my CQC7 now again.

Might I suggest the SwissTech Utili-Key?

It folds down to lock onto your keyring and sorta' looks like a key. It features two standard screwdriver blades, a philips screwdriver, a cap lifter and a small knife blade. It adds almost no bulk, and I've never had anyone freak out upon seeing it, even in schools. It's also cheap enough that I don't worry about tape residue, scratches from fibrous materials, etc.

Save your good knife and add some useful tools to your EDC. If you go to yahoo.com and type

swisstech utili-key

in the search box, you'll find several vendors. Just don't try to fly with one or go into a federal building. The folks at the metal detectors know about key tools and look at keyrings now.

Bob
