Story:
My wife bought this years ago for someone else, and isn't a gun person herself(still working on that). It sits in my side of the closet with a blanket draped over it so she can forget we even have it, she goes back and forth on selling it. So I thought I would just go ahead and do that, then ask for forgiveness once she realizes it. I've been wanting a pistol recently, as I enjoy shooting at my friend's farm, but money's tight. I don't know all the laws about trying to sell it, so figured it would be easier to just try trading it in. Before I get completely ripped off, I wanted to see everyone's thoughts first. When I checked different forums, for similar ones, I've seen anything from $50 to $400

Facts: (or what passes for it)
It's a 1944, all the numbers I can find match, the stamp looks like Izhevsk to me. It was bought from a sporting goods store, but don't know the price. I believe she only went out with it once, and I don't think many rounds at all were put through it. It's just the rifle and bayonet, no sling or case.

Pics are blurry, but here: http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a161/CreemCheese/Rifle/

Two hundred bucks tops. They're plentiful, and it has no rare markings or anything, but is a wartime dated rifle. Decent matching examples float between $75 and $250.

If it were Finnish, you might be able to get a better price on it. Look for an SA stamp. Other than that, what the above poster said.

M44's are getting hard to find. You could probably get around $200 for it private sale if it's in good shape. I suggest holding onto it because it will increase in value as they get harder to find.

All of the M44s I saw at a show a couple weeks ago were in the 350-400 buck range. Yes, the price of them is going up.....chris3

If I were near you I would give you a crispy $100 bill for it today. I love me some mosin, but especially the M44. That particular model is getting harder to come by but don't forget there are millions made. I suppose in good condition someone may go to $200.

Yup, Gorden, time for you to get that c+r license. You would have got your 30 bucks back on just that deal.

Paid $160 a few months ago private party, in good condition.

Hang onto it, it's not worth much but they're kind of cool.

I got another one in cosmolene , a Yugo M 44 with TRZ on the stock . A collector sold it to me for $ 90 cash. The bore is like new and has a sweet trigger break.

I believe she only went out with it once, and I don't think many rounds at all were put through it.

Have you checked the bore to make sure it was cleaned properly after shooting? If surplus ammo was used, it is corrosive and will rust the bore if not cleaned after shooting.
If you used current non-corrosive commercial ammo, then no problem.

Value decreasing...

I just checked the bore, and it's definitely rusty. Looks kinda like a bunch of cheetah spots.
From what I can tell, it may have been counter bored as well. However, I'm not real sure what I was looking for there. The end of it looked smooth, but I didn't have best lighting either.

Most on the market from that vintage were counterbored. I'd say $250 tops depending on the local demand. 1944 is a less common year for them, to be sure.

Hopefully the rust is recent and doesn't go to pitting. I'd also suggest a copper cleaner to get to steel.

A FINN M44 capture would be incredibly rare, since that side of the conflict was wrapping up when the rifle came out. I suppose it's possible but I've never heard of one.

Yeah, I wouldn't get rid of it. They're fun little rifles that are steadily gaining in value. I don't likely see them being upwards of $1000 dollars, but maybe one day when I'm long gone... Either way, they're nice to have around, ammunition is cheap, and the flamethrower fun-factor just can't be beat.

If that barrel looks bad, and wont clean up (keep trying, it wont hurt it) its 100$ rifle, tops............. Great barrel, a 150$- 200$.

If the barrel is smooth for a couple inches at the most, and you can see a 'step' , then its counterbored.

If its smooth and quite deeply that way, then the rifle was fired with out proper cleaning afterward, and rusted, was fired again, rusted, fired again, till the lands blew out as fine red dust with the next bunch of shots after a rusting period in a closet.
Thats why counter boring was done, to restore a barrel to accuracy and to remake the crown, and now much better protected during service.
I imagin, often in Combat, some Soviet fired your rifle, then sat scared to **** in the rain, snow, misty morning and did not dissassemble it at any moment, then fire it again a couple days later, maby clean it, go back out, do so again, swim a river, sleep in mud and hay, ect.Til said soviet gave up his gun at the end of the war or it was pryed from his cold dead fingers after a nameless battle on the Eastern Front.
It went to the arsenal, they referrbed and counterbord it to restore the crown and decent accuracy.

Or , someone just fired it rusty, untill the spam can was done, uncleaned, then sold it.

You might consitter firing a few rounds and then really giving it a scrub while its hot, then fire some more nad repeate the scrub.

I still need to get to the store, and get some stuff to clean this, but I did ask my wife to get it out of the closet for me (playing dumb since she hates me even looking at it) got good and bad news.

Good: She's becoming more pro-firearm. After seeing it again after some time's passed, she remembered how much fun it was too shoot. However, she finds it a bit heavy and didn't like the recoil. Big thing is it just brings up memories of her ex, so that's why she doesn't like it.

Bad: Took a closer look (note to self: stop doing that) the barrel really needs cleaned, I didn't even see the rifling grooves  It is a force match for the number on the "magazine door" on the trigger guard, sorry, I'm learning correct terminology as we go.

I sell mine for $200 or so, and have a handful left.

However, the supply of importable M44's is apparently exhausted, and there will be no more.

That one of yours had a decent looking stock, inserts in the sling holes, make a nice rifle for somebody.
