My google fu is failing me. I honestly cant find a thread comparing these 2 heads up. Is this one of those Equal but different methods kinda problems?

Ballistically are they as similar as one would think?
Federal mags are supposed to launch a 100 gr pill at 1870fps out of a 5 and 1/2 in barrel.
The old tokarev is said to launch a 90 gr pill out to 1720 from a 5 in barrel.

In the real world what the difference? How is the 327 list as a great man stopper but the tokarev is barley seen as acceptable?

Am I messed up here?

The key hear is public relations. The .327 Federal was designed and is marketed as a modern man stopper. The kinds of bullets and loads it fires are configured with the latest technology to bring men down very efficiently and the guns that use it are new model firearms.

7.62x25 on the other hand is a very old cartridge that was used mainly by the communists and most guns floating around that fire it are seen more as antiquated novelty guns then the ideal choice for personal protection. Furthermore, most 7.62x25 ammo are ball loads made by outdated standards.

Wolf made a personal defense load in 7.62x25. I am unaware of any real cases of someone being shot by one but I've seen allot of tests done with it that revealed it to be an extremely formidable load, which says allot considering that Wolf isn't exactly a top brand for anything, let alone personal defense loads.

If 7.62x25 hit the market for the first time 2 years ago and started out with personal defense loads, It'd probably make as big a scene as 5.7FN did or .327 Federal is now.

Unfortunately, the 7.62x25s poor reputation as a FMJ hole poker kinda killed the world's interest before it got a chance to show everyone what it can do with a hollow point.

As far as "which is better then which", I would think that in a modern firearm capable of handling higher pressure the 7.62x25 could easily match the ballistics of the .327 Federal and could make a great auto-loader alternative to the .327, though I still think that if it ever regains momentum, it'll come as a higher powered alternative to the 5.7FN.

I don't know if they took down the 327 magnum data or if I'm looking in the wrong place, but the last time I did this comparison research for myself, the ballistics for the two were nearly identical. The Brass Fetcher site has some good data on the 7.62x25 round that might interest you http://www.brassfetcher.com/index_files/762x25mm.htm.

Looking at this, in addition to the Wolf Gold JHPs they have data for some 115 grain Speer gold dots, which I've never seen before.
