Been lurking on the forums for a while, but I figured it was time I register and make a post. I have been waiting for a long time to turn 21 so I could purchase a handgun. Being as my birthday was yesterday, it's time to purchase a gun.

Like I said, I've been researching for a while and have narrowed down my choices to the Glock 19, Springfield XDm 3.8, or FN FNS. Can any of you shed some light on why one of these is better than the other, drawbacks, or whatnot? Please do not suggest other guns as these are the only 3 I'm looking at.

My advice is this, if you can, shoot them before you buy. Every gun fits everyone differently. All 3 are good choices for the most part. I own a Gen 4 19 and love it.

@sheeziks, I have no interest in revolvers. FWIW, this will be the first gun in my name, but not the first I've shot. I have shot thousands of rounds through my father's guns.

+1 to hedgemeister. Rent first if you can. But that being said, what guns does your father have that you liked to shoot and what didnt you like?

If I were to choose between those three I would take the Glock. It's size, capacity, reliability and aftermarket accessories make it an easy choice.

None of these things mean squat if you can't shoot it well however.

Ok...that's cool.

In that case, I think "Hedgemeister" gave you the best advice I can think of.
The best one out of the three is going to be the one that fits U the best. I do not like the way a Glock feels in my hand whatsoever, so I've never owned a Glock. The pistol I shoot the best with is my Sig P220.

@EBShooting Not sure on exact model numbers, but he has a .22LR Taurus, .40 S&W, and 9mm Ruger, along with some rimfire rifles.

Why is there no quote button?

None of your choices.

IMO, a quality .22 wheel gun with good sights. Learn to shoot. Fire discpline. Trigger pull, etc. It will take several hundred rounds. Find a good shooting coach.

Then, after you can get decent groups get a center fire. You will have two guns.

Go back and use the .22 to practice the basics. You will save $$$

If $ is no object , may I suggest SIG P210 . It is a debatable combo of 1911 & P-38 , both which I own and LOVE ! I think it may be the best handgun ever ! I like the wheelguns also . I LOVE 'EM ALL ! I understand your diliema .

Glock 19 (I have) pros: Good shooter, very reliable, very easy to field strip, easy CCW
cons: Its a poly gun( if thats what you want then its not a con),kinda of blocky, striker fired(unless you prefer that),sights are not that great

XDm(I have an XD) pros: 1911 style grip,very reliable,easy to field strip,decent sights,adjustable grip
cons:Again its a poly gun and striker fired unless thats what you want

FN/FNS:(Dont have) : Ive heard great things about this gun but not enough to even give a casual opinion.

Change that S to a X and you've got a winner.

If not then I must say of those choices go with the 19...proven reliable, parts and upgrades out the algore.

Good thing is this should be the first of many pistols you buy in the future, whatever your choice you'll have a nice sidearm. As your collection grows your tastes will change.

You've narrowed it down to three great pistols, so you can't really go wrong. If you can't shoot them, try to handle each and then go from there. If you are able, find a shop with a liberal return policy. I bought a used gun last week and clarified before purchase that I could return it if it didn't function or even if just didn't feel right for me. The manager agreed, and I ended up returning an unreliable PPK/S for another gun I wanted.

While it's not ideal, don't be afraid to trade out after buying if a gun doesn't fit you. When I first started carrying I was not in a financial situation that allowed me to own multiple guns, and I didn't have access to a rental range. Plenty of people say they'd never sell a gun: I wouldn't now, but a few years back if I wanted to try a handgun it meant I had to buy it, and in order to do that I had to sell the one I had. While it sucked sometimes, I'm glad I got to try a few models to find out what was right for me.

A year ago I'd say a g19 of the three you've mentioned but now after buying an fnp45, Five-seveN and FNS I'd definitely go with the FNS. I think FN makes some of the better poly pistols available these days.
