Help Me Choose My Next Gun!

Gander Mountain is religiously 20% or more higher than a locally owned gun shop 4 miles down the road where I live. They smoke a lot of crack.

I priced a SA Loaded 1911 at $150 more at gander mountain. Try www.budsgunshop.com they have a 3" OD Green XD9 for $466 shipped. Figure about $30 for FFL transfer from a local pawn shop and your still almost $100 cheaper than gander mountain (and you won't have to pay any taxes).

Cel:

From your original list of three, my favorite would be the XD-9SC. I have rented and fired the (full sized) XD-9, and own an XD-45. I like the XD's grip angle, and that it has a grip safety.

My 2d from that list would be the Bersa -- very nice ergonomics IMO, and most people who have them seem happy with their Bersas, though I've heard some gun-shop guys bad-mouth them. That's often a good sign, though, rather than bad ;)

And that PT92, well, it's not to my taste, but it doesn't feel bad in the hand. I shot the Beretta on which it's based and was quite happy with the sights and general shape, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it that shape doesn't seem as "classic" as some guns (like the 1911) or as sleek as some others, like the Kahr pocket guns. Eh, YMMV, and clearly it does.

I see you've added Cz to your list; since I'm on a Cz kick right now, take this with a grain of salt, but I'd get a Cz over that Taurus and smile :)

P95-Yeah, Gander Mountain does seem to be running on the high side. Most of their used pistols I was looking at seem to run from $400 on up!

yht-Yeah, I'm leaning towards that XD9 Subcompact as evidenced by the split second decision I made to put it on layaway while I'm still deciding.:banghead: In retrospect that really wasn't smart because that was $60 and then if I cancel Gander keeps $25 for their "restock"(put it right back on the shelf in the back where it was) fee.:banghead:

Another weapon

I just purchased a new carry gun, and being partial to 1911 I went another direction and went with the Taurus Millennium Pro 45c. It is a great pistol and I have already made it my number one carry pistol. You weren't to descriptive in what you were looking for, but there are many choices out there to fit your budget. Just remember, feel is everything.

That *$!* clerk told me that was the last one they were gonna make!........ J/K Anyway, yeah I think all was just anxious to have something new waiting in the wings. Maybe I should just try Bud's.

Lol I was just messing with you dude, but you seem to know that. Like I said though, if you have other gun stores in your area, try them. As for the layaway, I bought two guns from the store. Talk about banging your head against the wall.

It has to be crack. Some of the prices I have seen in there...unbelievable.

Cel, I just purchased a Beretta 92FS Police Special last month for 475 with three magazines. If you like the Taurus 92, at least consider the real deal.

In my opinion, I had the Taurus, and it was way too big and no where near the quality of the Beretta that It's trying to copy. I do have other Taurus guns that are very nice quality guns, so I don't have anything against Taurus in general, just that particular model. I wouldn't trust the Bersa to be reliable, due to the price point, reputation, etc. I do have an SA XD 40 Sub-Compact that I bought used as a package and I'm very surprised at how well it shoots. I didn't think that I would like it that much because I'm a big Glock fan. The CZ-75 that was mentioned is a gun that I've always wanted to try. They have a great reputation world-wide. I'd say probably with good reason. The XD or the CZ-75 are both great guns. You can't go wrong with either one.

I have never heard of a Bersa being unreliable, and I own one myself. It has never failed to fire or cycle. Ever. Stick to what you know, not unsupported opinions.

Update: Went to Gander Mountain today and canceled that layaway for the XD9 Subcompact. Since I know a few of the people there they did give me my full layaway refund instead of taking out $25 for "restocking".:D Anyway, I told them that I was gonna get it offline and have it sent there. They gave me some playful ribbing but after we laughed it up a bit they said a lot of former customers had been put off by their prices. Bottom line: "We don't blame you". They did get in some new shipments of the XD9 Subbie in stainless but those were going for $600! So I told them I will probably be back in either tomorrow or early next week so I can have them send their FFL where it's needed.

Sandwich-Yeah, I had bought 4 guns from my local Gander Mountain prior to their price increases even though I'm a poor college student. (Those student loans are gonna bite me in the @$$!:D:banghead:) It's crazy now though.

Ruckus-Where!?!?!?

Billy396- I have a Bersa .380 that has been very kind to me.:D How is the recoil of that 40 in the Subcompact?

Glad to hear they didn't screw you, but then again you were lucky enough to have a connection. If it had been a Ripoff Mountain around here, they probably would have kept the whole $60.

In all fairness to Gander, sometimes they have good deals. I got my Bersa .380 ACP there for $229 a year ago, which isn't the best price, but not the worst either. I also bought a Ruger P95 from them a few months ago for $350 (again, not the best deal but not the worst either). I also recently saw the S&W Sigma Series there for $300, which is a good price. The next time I went they were $400 though.

It was really the sales staff that turned me off to Gander. In my experience, they either know nothing about what they are selling, are rude, or both. Add that in with the now insane prices ($300 for a Bersa .380 ACP? $650 for a Glock 30?), and I don't go near the stores anymore, unless I am bored and happen to be in the area with friends.

Four? Damn man, I am a poor college student too. You've got to pace yourself. You're lucky to be able to afford four. I feel your pain on the student loans too. And of course I have my credit card bill too.

The prices at Gander now though, as you mentioned, are insane. I only deal I have seen there recently (other than the Sigmas) is for a HD shotgun made by NEF for $200. I'm hoping I can find it somewhere else for less. I just can't support that store anymore.

Good luck getting your gun. Hope I helped you out a little bit.

Sandwich- I purchased my Bersa .380 from GM back in 06 for $230. When I went in there to cancel the layaway today the duo tone model, like I have, was 270 and the black and gold was $300!

Four? Damn man, I am a poor college student too. You've got to pace yourself. You're lucky to be able to afford four.

On the other side of that, one I sold it back unfired because it was a dumb impulse purchase (Taurus PT-22) and I had a Colt Sistema that I only paid $266 for stolen.:cuss: I only got to fire it once and it was stolen a week later!!!!:fire: I was pissed. I had done a search on the serial and found out it was manufactured in 1952! Thought that was neat. I haven't been able to find one since. Credit cards......I can't even mention those.....geez....I think my credit score just went down from me even typing those words....

They were also having a clearance sale on firearms, although I didn't even take the time to look at anything. I was mostly just talking to my 'associates' at Gander Mountain. It's funny, the people I talk to there on a normal basis are knowledgeable (sp? Too lazy to check) about firearms. But there are some let's say gun dolts there. I had one gun 'expert' there tell my girlfriend that she should probably only be looking at 9mm or .380 because anything larger than that would probably be too much for her to shoot. Her reply "I have no problem shooting pistol grip shotguns so I'm sure I could handle it". 'Expert' "Err...umm...well".... That was hilarious. :D

But yeah, sorry for being so longwinded and I appreciate the help!

When I read Taurus and Bersa I almost puked. If you insist on one of those 3 guns, please do yourself a favor and just get the XD

Yeah, because neither of those guns have a great reputation for reliability. Taurus hate all you want, but the 92-99 pistols have always been really good pistols. Massad Ayoob goes so far as to recommend one in the fifth edition of Combat Handgunnery. Many people actually prefer the Taurus because of the relocated safety. As far as the Bersa goes, I think your going to be hard pressed to find many people who share your negative opinion of the Bersa. Whatever, if you like XD's, they are a fine gun as well.

I have that same Duo Tone model, and bought it at around the same time as you (Fall 2006), for the same price. Great little gun, isn't it? Anyway, they are running $270 there now? That's a real bargain compared to here, where the same gun goes for $300. No kidding. My jaw almost hit the floor. And the CC Bersa with 9 shots goes for $350 here. It is absolutely nuts.

On the other side of that, one I sold it back unfired because it was a dumb impulse purchase (Taurus PT-22) and I had a Colt Sistema that I only paid $266 for stolen. I see, it makes more sense now. How did the Sistema get stolen (I would be pissed too)?

Credit cards......I can't even mention those.....geez....I think my credit score just went down from me even typing those words....

I'm lucky, I only have one, and I am still able to make payments on it, but I am sinking fast...I wonder what raising kids in an apartment will be like...

You are right, some people at Gander know guns. But at least here, most don't. Maybe you just have better Gander Mountains over there. The best was when I asked the clerk I was buying my P95 from if it came with 15 rounds magazines (as it should). He said they only came with 10 round mags (even though the tag clearly said "2 15rd magazines"). We took out the magazine and looked at it, and he still insisted that was 10 rounds. I guess he's never seen a double stack magazine before. After the manager (who was very nice) put 15 rounds into the magazine, the guy shut his mouth. And I wasn't even trying to be a smartass. I just wanted to make sure I was getting what I paid for.

I should mention, I tend to be long winded, especially about things that piss me off. That's why I try to not talk about Gander Mountain.

Lol how red did his face turn after that? I wish I could have seen that. Isn't it nice that some gun experts at Gander Mountain feed in to the stereotype that women can't handle powerful calibers? To be fair though, it isn't limited to Gander Mountain. What gun did she choose by the way?

But yeah, sorry for being so longwinded and I appreciate the help!

Sorry for being so longwinded as well, and I am glad that I could help out a little bit. One suggestion though, as another poster mentioned, have you thought about a Glock 19? Another suggestion also might be a Ruger P89, P95 or a SR9. All of the Rugers are heavy, but good guns. The P89 has a reputation of having great accuracy, but it is really heavy. The P95, which I have, is a value gun. If you have $500, you might want to look at the Glock. Also, are you limited to 9mm, or are you interested in other calibers too?

Let us know what you decide by the way.

Of all the choices you listed, ther is no doubt that you should choose the XD. Ypu have a great company with a huge aftermarket. If you want something obscure- find a Steyr MA-1

If it's any consolation I just ordered a brand new Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra-Compact for $340 including background and taxes. I could have chosen anything they could possibly order, but for the money it's hard to beat these Bersa's.
