Just got a new 6920 carbine. It was only shipped with two gas rings instead of three. It shoots fine. Are the new ones coming with two or do I need to call Colt?

I'd call Colt. There should be 3. The rifle will function with only 1, but there should still be 3.

I agree, should be three. I'm sure Colt will fix this fast. And it's wise to have spares so get 4! Fortunately this is an easy fix.

I've seen one continuous or three but never two. Seems too possible for the gaps to colocate with only two for it to ever be policy.

Gas ring gaps do not need to be staggered, the fact that the rifle will function with only one ring is proof.

Interesting. We were taught otherwise in boot camp.

They tell you to stagger them, but it really isn't required for the rifle to work. Really. They're free to rotate and there is nothing to keep them from lining up. If it was vital for function, that would have been addressed.

I had the damndest M-16A2 at one time that would continually align its own rings and it did fail to cycle. Disassemble, stagger, reassemble and in less than 30 rounds they're back in line again and all stop. Weird, but there ya go.

Gas rings like many AR parts can be effected by tolerance stacking. A undersize bolt and a oversize carrier well have more 'leak' than a spec pair. I've seen the reverse stacking with a bolt that was a slip fit in the carrier without rings installed. Rifle would function without gas rings but would not lock the bolt on the empty mag.

Easy to test if you're a non-believer.... line up all the gaps and go shooting. It will work just fine.

The question is if it will shoot in all conditions in such a manner. If heavily fouled and low on lube non-staggered gas rings could theoretically be the hair that breaks the camel's back for a malfunction.

Can't say firsthand but you'd hope Colt would stuff a few gas rings in an envelope. Cheap fix for them and an easy way for the tech to close the call.

No kidding...after waiting on the phone for an hour before someone picked up, I was told that he didn't know what I was asking about and needed to email Colt Defense. After a day passed with no info, I emailed back and was told that the "ONE" person that I needed to speak with will be out until Oct 5th. Told them that I find it hard to accept that only one person at Colt could answer my simple question. Seems they could just dig up some gas rings and send me a set. So yeah, their CS sucks so far. I'm sort of disappointed because I paid $1K for the AR that "all others are compared to" and Colt didn't even ship all of the required parts with the NIB rifle. My Armalite and RRA rifles came with all of the parts right out of the box. So much for that.

ApacheCoTodd, I believe you. :) It's just too weird to make up! That's a rifle I would have turned back in!
We were in a dusty world overseas teaching locals and it was a bit embarrassing to have the thing fail so I switched components amongst team members 16s and to one degree or another, the malfunction followed the bolt so in my hootch that night, I stoned the gaps of the rings with an "Arkansas" stone and cordless drilled the inside of the bolt with a cut-up chamber brush and tooth paste. Things were okee-dokee the next day. Odd, that!

It seems this is a small QC issue, and a big CS issue. I would keep calling Colt until you find a person/manager who knows what you're talking about and would remedy the issue.

Fortunately you can shoot your AR just fine with 2 gas rings. I also suggest buying a set of spare gas rings for yourself. It costs less than $5 for 3.
