All I had intended to purchase a carbine length AR-15 either a Colt 6721 or 6920 and at the last minute decided on a Les Baer Police Special. Does anyone else have one of these rifles and how does it compare to the Colt 6721? Do the 6721 and 6920 share the same features from the M-4 chart that has been posted? Specifically the M16 bolt and the M-4 feed ramps? Thanks.

for God Sakes... just make sure it has the black extractor spring insert.

It's a les Baer.....I think it's going to shoot just fine.

You mean the guy who puts the castle nut on backwards?

I really can't stand les baer rifles. Horrible configs

what is everyone's fixation with the castle nut?

is it that you want to remove the option of ever removing the buffer tube by staking the threads? I guess the last thing you want to happen when shooting coyotes, watermelons, or gophers (which is what about 99% of AR15 owners use their rigles for), is a catastrophic failure of the castle nut...

This has nothing to do with staking the castle nut or not.

We are talking about a rifle that is intentionally built incorectly. I don't think I would touch one of these. And when people have contacted them about it they were told essentially that Les knows more about Guns than anyone and this is what he thinks is right.

Of course that is complete BS. A rifle build wrong is a rifle build wrong.

so how do they shoot? Experts on message boards are easy to find. Experts that own their own firearm companies are less common.

I'm not saying putting the castle nut on backwards is a good idea, but what is the catastrophic failure mode for this?

if it's that critical... then turn the thing around...

Thanks everyone that posted. I found another thread on ar15.com regarding the Les Baer Police Special and the consensus seemed to be that the Les Baer is a bit pricey for what you get but a decent rifle. The backwards castle nut is a bit odd. I'll post a range report and pics later. BTW, my in stock and available choices were carbines from Sabre Defense, Colt and Les Baer. S&W, Stag, Noevski, RRA and Bushmaster are still hard to find in my neck of the woods. I really was set on buying a 6920, but got impatient trying to find one. Thanks again to all.

In my defense I was dead tired when I wrote that post LOL. But yes it is amusing that I spelled incorrectly. I have not fired one of the Les Baer rifles yet, only handled one. Here is what I found on that model

Castle nut was backwards
Receiver extension was loose (gee I wonder why).
The Gas tube had been forced in at an angle. It looked like they had not properly adjusted the barrel nut and then just shoved the tube in there. It felt like it was dragging along the Gas Key but I didn't look at this part in detail.

The Gas Key was not Properly Staked.

These are the things I noticed in a quick inspection. It was enough to convince me to stop looking.

For the OP, Check the gun over in detail. Make sure everything is right, turn the Castle nut around, etc and you should have a fine gun. Maybe you overpaid, maybe you didn't. If you like the gun and it serves your purpose then that really doesn't matter though.

has anyone ever had a gas key failure on one of the manufacturers that are often accused of being staked improperly?

I'm just curious, as I have three bushmasters and have not re staked the gas key on any of them.
