At what point does a handgun become "too heavy"?

Does it even matter if its for range use only? Gonna buy a CZ SP-01 and am slightly concerned about the weight.

1.8 pounds according to CZ? No big deal. 1911s are heavier, and I don't consider them "too heavy".

unless it weighs as little as air there will always be complaints about the weight.

Some of it depends on your preferred method of carry.
I can carry my new Ruger SR9 all day, on my hip and forget that it's there. It weighs about 30 ounces loaded.
My EAA Witness .45 is about a pound heavier, loaded. With a good belt and holster, it's not bad, but the SR9 is easier.

A 7.5" Ruger Redhawk is about 56 ounces empty and is too heavy for all-day hip carry, for me. It rides in a shoulder holster while I hunt.

Bear in mind, my EAA Witness .45 is the large frame, and heavier than a CZ75.

The CZ looks like it weighs about the same as a 1911. Not bad.

Whenever you decide it is.
Nobody can give you a definitive answer on that. There isn't one.

I'd say once you go over 3 1/2 to 4 lbs. it's too heavy. At that point I have a hard time keeping a handgun steady.

For EDC, when I am aware of the pistol's weight ... With G27/PT145, after a few seconds, I don't even know it's there. With the right carry rig, I know coworkers who jog/run with their G26/G27. For rough off-road riding in quads, I use active retention holsters like Blackhawk/Serpa with lanyard and lighter full-size polymer pistols help.

For range use, no. When I am shooting multiple pistols, I even use a cheapie nylon universal holster for fullsize Glocks, M&P and heavier 1911s and they work fine.

If you're not gonna carry it...

For a range gun, it's not much of an issue, except as 56 said, keeping it steady, but even then, the CZ doesn't come close to a super-heavy handgun. It's not a full sized Desert Eagle or a Super Redhawk. Even those are reasonably shootable.

Heavier guns are more fun at the range. Less felt recoil= more shooting.

For god's sake kazaam, we've helped you though guessing, second guessing, then second guessing your second guess. You will be ecstatic with your SP01. You will have a smile a mile wide, and you will wonder what took you so long to make the decision. Take a deep breath, forget about the decision, and think about how happy you will be instead.

I will be happy through you vicariously, as I try to get a hold of an SP01 myself (hard to find these days)...

LOL, awesome reply! :D Ok ok, I'll do it! I was gonna anyways haha. Just curious.

Try carrying a loaded/scoped 14" Desert Eagle while hunting (6-7 lbs).....after a day or two, everything else seems light as a feather.

Even for [Concealed] carry I don't think it gets too heavy until long after it gets too big.

I've put several hundred rounds through a borrowed SP-01 and trust me, it feels fine. And I'm a scrawny guy.

It's well balanced and feels perfectly nested in your hand.

Pretty much this. My answer would have been "when you won't carry it." There is *so much* about an EDC that is personal it's not even funny.

'Heavy' is a very subjective term.

My Glock 27, fully loaded, weighs 30 or so ounces. About the same as my 2.5 inch S&W M66 combat magnum loaded with 125gr JHPs.

Both to me are easy to carry. Other people might think anything weighing more than 15 ounces is to much. Still others don't mind a 40 ounce 1911 .45 (which when fully loaded is more like 50 ounces.)

For the range, weight is no biggie. For CCW it means more to some than others.

Actually a sp-01 is a little heavier than a 1911 but it is no big deal. I have both. I love my sp-01 shadow but I think my 75sa handles better because it isn't quite as front heavy.

Actually, for "range use" the heavier weight is a big plus for less felt recoil and muzzle flip. It also has very good range sights, mag capacity and accuracy.

This pistol design is successfully used all over the world for "action shooting" (IPSC-USPSA) involving fast movement and transitions to multiple targets. The weight is considered a benefit to most shooters.

Some shooters, like railroader above, prefer less up front weight for target transitions. A lighter front end is slightly faster to get moving and to stop on the next target.

JMO: It's an awesome pistol you will enjoy shooting.
