I have loaned semi autos to several people to shoot for qualification.

The problem is that the people do well and then want to buy the gun from me.

I know you probably will, suggest you practice with the pistol before shooting for qualification.

A borrowed semi-automatic pistol is okay.
As long as it shoots centerfire ammunition.
No rimfires allowed.

And is 32 cal or larger.

Based on Collector0311's question, it implies that in Texas, if you qualify for your CCW with a revolver, you would be prohibited for carrying a semi. Is that true?

I know that in Nevada semi's had to be listed on the CCW and a person had to qualify with each one, but could carry any revolver they wanted to. I think that has been repealed now, but not sure.

Correct. In TX if you qualify with a revolver you are limited to only carrying a revolver.

Qualify with an auto and you can carry any legal handgun.

TX is a little screwy IMHO. You must use a .32 or larger to qualify, however once you have your permit you can carry a .22 Derringer....

When I took my qualification course the instructor brought several pistols in case someones didn't work. Sure enough the guy shooting his Hi-Point next to me had a failer that took it out of the game. The instructor give him a Glock 19 to finish the course with.

A lot of the instructors like you to have a gun the has 10 round capacity to save some time loading in between courses of fire but not required since each set is 5 rounds. I prefer a full size gun to test with just because it is more accurate. I have used my HK USP 45 on the last 2 renewals with perfect scores which is pretty easy to do if you practice. Of course if you shoot a lot you could probably pass blindfolded. LOL

Just did my 3rd renewal on line the other day, since it is my 3rd there is no class and no proficiency test, just give Texas some cash.

When I took my Texas CHL course back in 1999 I only owned a revolver, a Taurus M85. When I got to the range my instructor said, "Here shoot my Glock". It was the first time that I had ever shot a semi auto pistol and my first experience with a Glock.

I had no time to practice, I said a prayer and shot the qualifying targets good enough to pass! I did, however, have a nasty gouge on my hand latter attributed to "Glock Bite"! It kinda turned me off from semi autos until I bought my first CZ!!

I had a very similar thing happen to me. I am a college student and when I took my CHL class I lived in a dorm. Luckily the CHL class I went to provided firearms for the students to shoot (the class was set up specifically for college students). They handed me a Glock. I had never shot a Glock before and I did not know what to expect. Unfortunately I found out right then and there that I despise Glocks. I hate the handle, I hate the controls, I hate the sights, I hate the trigger guard, I hate everything about them (or at least that model). I still got 95% on the shooting portion (I think that speaks to how easy that test is).

To answer the query, yes. It's better to have some practice with your borrowed piece and it's better to use an auto to gain the option of using either an auto or revolver. I brought two borrowed .45s. One failed during the test, the other worked well, but by then I was so rattled that I failed and had to come back and try again.
