What's the best Lowest Price HD Shotgun?

I purchased a NEF pardner Pump 20 gauge from Wally World for about $165. It's a youth model with 21-inch barrel. I've had for a couple of years-it seems to work pretty well.

I've owned all 3, and all are very good for HD. Mossberg does make a youth model in the 500 with shims to adjust LOP. Of these 3, I would recommend the 500 for it's tang mounted safety and abundance of barrel choices.

All will serve well. I own a couple of Mossberg 500s and a Norinco 98 (copy of Rem. 870) I haven't had any issues/problems with any of them.

Academy sells the maverick in the field version for $179 and the HD version for $189, but I'm not sure that it's still offered in a 20 ga. version.

I'm on me second one and they are great guns manufactured by the Freedom Group (Remington, Bushmaster etc parent company)

I see used 870 Rem Wingmasters for under $200 all the time in the local trading post paper.

Been a diehard mossy fan for a while now. I have a 930 SPX and an AOW 14" 590, both with side saddles. Love them both, and the AOW makes for a great house gun.

Had two other 500's before that, and never had a single problem. Both were in the $300 range new, and they are easy to take apart/maintain. Can't go wrong with Mossberg.

I Set my Mother in law up with a pawn shop Mossberg 500 youth 20 gauge for $125. It wasn't used much at all. Its short and fit's her real well. Well enough that I dug mine out from when I was a snot nosed kid and put it to use here at my home.

Both hold #3 Buckshot that ought to hold down the fort.

One of these days I'll get a big boy scatter gun.

This is my home defense shotgun. The same thing can be done with a maverick shotgun as the parts are interchangeable.

I would lean towards the 20 GA youth Pardner Pump, alternatively the 12GA Pardner Pump Protector, these are Chinese built clones of the Remington 870, odly enough the company is now owned by Remington's parent company. Finish is not that great and they are heavier than their 870 cousins, which is not a bad thing when it comes to recoil. The Maverick is not a bad choice either, either way your looking at somewhere in te $180 - $220 range out the door once you add taxes, etc. With a bit of shopping around in normal times you might shave $50 off that, but with the current buying craze you wil have enough trouble just finding them in stock.

I bought a beautiful, wood stocked, Mossberg 500 at a pawn shop for under $200 a couple of years ago. I'd imagine you could find what you're looking for in the used rack at your local gun shop.

If not, I'll repeat what the others have said:
NEF Pardner, Mossberg Maverick or 500 or Norinco 98, used Rem 870.
I shot trap with an 870 Wingmaster for little over 6 years, never thought I'd like another pump gun. But eventually sold if and now like my Mossy 500 even better.

Possibly you now have a shotgun that better fits you? Regardless, fitment can be a primary factor in how well you shoot a particular gun and how much you enjoy it.

I just showed my friend how to clean his 870. Was hard to get in all the books and crannies in there, and it wasn't obvious how to pull out the ejector spring, which looked riveted in place, and had a lot of gunk built up on it. Also the long springs that hold the shells in the magazine on either side of the action were peened in place, making it impossible to clean behind them. Probably not real deal breakers, but I've found mossbergs much easier to take apart and clean.

Nothing wrong with a used mossberg or an 870 though, and the prices are right.

Do your fellow citizens a favor and buy American, even if it means you only afford yourself a quality used gun. I just found a mossberg 500 pump for $125. It needed a Through cleaning of the action, but that didn't take long and now it feels as good as new. Thumb operated tang safety is nice, as you don't need to fumble for little buttons, nor remember which way to push them. Forward means go!

I recently bought a Maverick. After researching a few low priced guns, there seemed to be fewer complaints compared to the Chinese made guns. It leaves something to be desired in terms of fit and finish, but it appears rugged enough and works fine so far.

Look for Mossberg 500s made for Big Store retailers when it was still "ok" for them to sell guns.They may be marked Westernfield M500AD(Montgomery Wards),probably be the older single action bar type,but still solid performers.I pick them up for $100-125,whack the barrels down to 20"(18" min length),clean and oil and test fire,load up and put in their hiding spots.

I have owned a Maverick 88 for over ten years and find it flawless in action and fit and finish.
The blueing on my is still very good and the shotgun has never had a malfunction.
At around $179 it's a little money for a lot of shotgun.

Best of all it's made by Mossberg. Only difference is the trigger group safety instead of the rear tang safety.
