Bought a Citadel 1911... only had it out a few times, and haven't had any problems with the mags, but I've read their mags are not the best... so which do people recommend?

BTW, was hesitant on purchasing the 1911, but it's smooth and well behaved, real nice to shoot. I still prefer my glock, but I think this one will be a favorite.

Mmmm?

Don't mess with success.

Or put another way?

If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

Wilson and Metalform seem to wirk best with my Armscor guns
Nothing wrong with the stock magazine, I assume you got a couple ACT-mags in the box, that's the loadout for the Citadel-marked guns as far as I know.

yeah, two stock mags. Like I said, no issues with them, but have read a lot of people have had issues... figured I want to buy more mags, so I'd see what other kind work best.

if it is a compact .45, the cheap metalform version Midway sells is a winner, I ordered a bunch as cheap range mags, and ended up with super-reliable all-purpose magazines, the only downside is going back to original capacity rather than the new +1 standard

If the two mags that came with your gun both work then they must be ok. I prefer to trust in hands on versus someones generic review of something.

My ACT mags (OEM with S&W for many years also) have worked fine for several years without failure as have a friend's (OEM with his Citadel). They offer easy insertion and removable base plates for cleaning, two nice features for magazines that see a lot of range time.

As rcmodel noted, if it ain't broke.

If you just want to have more, look at Checkmate 7-rd magazines with the GI Hardball feed lips and flat dimpled follower. They are what I carry on duty, because they have been absolutely flawless.

My Rock Island 1911 only seems to like the ACT mags. Tried CProd, Chip McCormick, and it did not like them. Zero problems with the ACT mags. Plus, they are pretty cheap. Well, used to be, no telling what they are now.

It comes with two armscore act-mag's... I'll do more shooting with it and see if they remain problem free, if so, buy more.

I've got a local guy that stocks lots of kimber mags. I've got five or six and they've all been great. I also hav. Six or seven mags that I bought with the loaded coupon that came with my Springer. I don't know who was making their mags at the time, but they're good too. I'm just not a big fan of the follower. In them.

FWIW , my RIA 5" GI works great with the original Novack and I have two Chip McCormick power mags which are flawless . YMMV

What I have found is that the spring is normally the culprit. If you have a follower that gives you no trouble then just get a couple of new springs from Wilson and when your mags fail to feed, swap out the spring. A great new quality spring will make most mags perform just fine.

The worst mags will have lip problems, the second worst will have follower problems. All cheap mags will have spring issues eventually, some right away. And if you use them enough all springs will wear out in your 1911.

So while you are ordering a couple of mag springs get a couple of recoil springs and a replacement main spring.

If adding or changing mags, I've always used Wilsons with no problems.

As I said in my earlier post, and what Walkalong reinforced, is that you should try some GI hardball feed lip magazines. After shooting 1911s for a really long time it is my belief that there is just no equal if you are shooting ball or JHP ammo.

JMB designed the gun for flat followers with dimples. And long tapered upward and outward feed lips. Unless you are shooting some sort of queer weirdo bullet nose shapes, such a magazine should feed flawlessly. I have read many very experienced 1911 gunsmiths who say that the first thing they examine when a 1911 is brought in with feed issues is whether it will feed from a flat followered GI feedlip magazine.

Thank you, Walkalong, for the backup.
