1911

They are not hard to disassemble as long as you are smarter than your 1911.
In your description, You forgot accurate

Nice! I saw one the other day at a non absurd price and very seriously considered buying it. Had it been a commander it would have been mine.

I've heard that one about hard to strip and reassemble. No clue where that came from.

I guess compared to Austrian tupperware, maybe, but I've seen more than one thread about somebody shooting themselves when they forgot to clear the chamber and ignored Rule #2.

I guess compared to Austrian tupperware,

Its that they are comparatively difficult to a lot of guns. Sure they aren't difficult in absolute terms but I'd say it is "hard" to do relative to a whole lot of other guns.

I still struggle with the notion that a 1911 is hard to disassemble or reassemble. Comparing them to any gun made doesn't change that for me.

It's not that they are difficult per se, just more difficult. Do you not agree with that? I love 1911s but I think that is pretty undeniable.

Still don't have any yet. Was tempted last year a few times with the RIA ones, but have since decided that, if I ever do get one, I want a "domestic". The store I visit frequently had a SR1911 the other day marked at around $700, I think. They're coming down into "almost-tempting" territory.

Very nice 1911! I find it theraputic to detail strip and clean them. You can't take modern fancy guns down so easy.

Not outdated, but I do not like disengaging slide-lock safety prior to fining and the carry weight of loaded gun. The Glock has manual safety built into trigger shoe (mindless mo) and much higher capacity along with lighter weight.
The Glock will also cycle wider variety of ammo w/o stoppages.

just more difficult. Do you not agree with that?
Not particularly. I can completely disassemble a 1911 as easy or easier than an XD. I may give the edge to pulling the slide and barrel to the XD (And other polymer guns), but only because there are a couple more steps to the 1911, and you don't have to worry about slipping and putting an idiot scratch on the XD when putting the slide back on. Certainly not hard by any stretch of the imagination though. :)

You will never get the beauty, craftsmanship, and trigger of a high quality 1911 on a Glock. Who ever designed that hideous Glock trigger never heard of John Moses Browning.

I've seen an XD and glock have the slides removed. The slide pops off easy . You are left with a spring in a cartridge. I guess if all you do is tooth brush the spring and guide inside it, it would be simpler.. I'd think one would want to disassemble the spring to fully clean and lubricate that.. THAT IS HARDER than any 1911.

It is a captive spring. If you take it off the guide rod, it will not go back on and stay. A Glock can be disassembled to its four main parts in probably about 3 seconds. I Don't remember it going that quickly or easily with my Kimber 1911.

I won't lie I've got a bull barreled 1911 that's a PIA to disassemble and one that's so tight it's snapped a poly bushing wrench and nothing I own has a FLGR.

Takedown, however, ranks near the bottom of my ownership list.

Disassembly is not any harder than other arms, just more complicated. But, it isn't hard to do. Indeed, it is easy, though the steps are specific to the 1911 and its derivatives like the TT30 & TT33. But, there are folks who complain the CZ-75 is difficult to take down. Go figure.

Picky.
High maintenance.
Heavy.
Old-Fashioned.
A pain to disassemble.
Unreliable when compared to 'modern' pistols.
Expensive.

*blink*

How do such rumors get started?

Well...okay. I'll concede that some of'em can be pretty expensive...but having to spend megabucks in order to get a solid, reliable pistol isn't chiseled in granite. As far as I can determine, the biggest problem with them is the magazines that are included in the box with most of'em.

The 1911 pistol was designed to function. If it's built to the correct specs and fed decent ammunition from a proper magazine...it will function. It doesn't have a choice. It's a machine.

As far as the disassembly/reassembly question...

*cough*

Assuming that it's in the original configuration and not loaded down with extra bells and whistles...it can be field-stripped in 10-12 seconds...my record is 8 seconds...and reassembled in 15-20...with my best effort timed with a stopwatch at a tick over 12.

Silly rumors. I gots me a suspicion that Glock started'em.

I have the same but I think black is beautiful and so have the black Ruger wood grips on mine. Sorry though, I like shooting my black CZ Phantom with Cajun GunWorks overhaul better.

In my experience unreliable 1911's are usually because of owner/gunsmith modifications to the original design, or bad ammo. The very first handgun I ever owned was a Colt licensed Argentine .45 and it was as reliable as could be. Since then I have owned many others and I have yet to have a unreliable, unmodified 1911.

As for expensive, I bought a Rock Island Government Model last year and it was a heck of a buy at $500. In fact, I liked it so much, that I bought a RI compact model as a carry gun.

But then I also bought this Colt for twice that price.

I remember how fussy it was to learn to disassemble my 10/18 Colt Model of 1911 when I first got it... checking each step in the ordnance manual before I did it....

Now, of course, I could do it in my sleep.

Like anything, it takes practice.

I carry a 1911 (Remington R1S) because I've spent more than a decade handling and firing that Colt. I don't have to look at it, I don't have to think about it... I know it.

In addition... 1911's are...

Picky:No
High maintenance:No
Heavy: a little
Old-Fashioned:No
A pain to disassemble:Total BS
Unreliable when compared to 'modern' pistols:Total BS
Expensive:Some are some are not.

I helped build a 1911 before I had a driver's license. I was disassembling and reassembling them while my armpit hair was coming in. I had the 1911 figured out before I had girls figured out.
