I want a better .40 cal carry gun. Period.

It's a personal decision.

However, since I carry around an M&P, I'd be happy to answer questions if you are interested in M&P.

My FNS-40 is a bit big for concealed carry, but it's been 100% reliable, easy to shoot, and it's made stateside.

Not to mention Kahr has terrible customer service...

M&P 40c IMO fits your criteria. Nice gun.

FNH does manufacture them in the US. I think they're pretty good guns. I had an FNP45 Tactical and overall I had no major complaints, but I wound up trading it in on an HK USP45 Tactical. Although I took a bit of a beating on the trade I'm still happy; the HK is just a flat out better gun. Each of us has our own idea of the ideal gun and yours may not match mine. But I don't like the safety on the FN pistols. The lever is a bit small and the detent isn't extremely positive. I don't feel like I'd be comfortable carrying any of them cocked and locked, which is my preferred way to carry. Also they safety is also a decocker. While some like this I don't. On my USPs I always change the detent plate out for a #9 which removes decocker functionality from the lever. The HKs also have much more positive detent.

On the plus side the FNP/FNX triggers are very nice! If I had to carry hammer down on a live round I think I could maybe even live with it on the FNP.

To the OP...

Based on your criteria for not trusting the Ruger SR40, you will eventually run out of guns to trust. Every brand on earth has a few that need attention from the factory.

Yep, seven round .357 Magnum is looking better and better.

I've tried a bunch, but will never part with my Kahr CW9! You'll have to pony up for an upgrade over the CW line to not have a SS slide, but its concealed and don't matter to me. Kahrs have the best triggers for long safe pulls, and are accurate for me out to 75yrds, way outside the window for SD use. The accuracy will give you all the confidence you need for SD use, and mine has been 100% reliable.

There's a lot of fine pistols made outside the US, but if that's one of your criteria the only two I can think of that meet your other criteria are the:

  • S&W M&P40c
  • Kahr P40 or CW40
Note that the Kahrs are single-stack, so less rounds (6+1) than the M&P (10+1)

Another vote for the SIG P224. I recently played with one at a local shop and it is a very nice pistol. It also will work with full size P229 magazines, which in 40 I think holds 12 rounds.

Only semi auto I personally own is a Sig 299/40 S&W. Carry a Glock 22 on duty, but the SIG is my go to off duty weapon. Its the double action only version, very like a revolver! Best of both platforms I guess, double action only with 12 round and fast reload capability.

Here's my deal. I have two carry guns and I try to be proficient with both. I have a 340 PD and a Ruger SR40c. The S&W has been impeccably flawless, but that's not what this post is about. Sometimes I want to carry an autoloader with more ammo capacity. I've always been a revolver guy and cut my teeth on single action Rugers so I wanted my CCW carry autoloader gun to be a Ruger, too. So I got the SR40c and have enjoyed it immensely until recently. When it stopped firing. Which is a big deal. Light strikes. Apparently somewhat common.

If your SR40 (or SR9) hasn't had the light strike problem I don't need to hear about it. Because mine has. It plagues some pistols, and not others.

I keep my guns clean and maintained. The striker channel and pistol is clean. I purchased and installed the stiffer (really actually longer) striker spring from Galloway Precision. It helped a little but still only maybe 3 out of 5 rounds on average fired. My SR40c is en route, as we speak, to the factory. I don't know what they are going to do to it because their technicians don't come to the phone. So, cool. They fix it. I get it back. It fires. But, um, I don't trust it anymore, sorry. No, I'm not sorry, I don't trust it anymore. Once bitten twice shy. Sorry to have to say all that but I'm looking for a better CCW autoloader:

Compact
All black (or camo)
.40 cal
USA made
forget price at this point
the two magazine capacity (9 and 15) that the SR40c had was ideal

Please don't ask me why I haven't considered Glock. I have as much respect for Glock as Anderson Silva now has for Chris Weidman. But I don't want a Glock. I have my reasons.

So, please educate me on reliable .40 cal carry guns that fit my criteria.

I'm grateful for your time. Seriously!
If you do not like Glock (some are marked Made in USA on the slide) then professional's choice would be S&W CS40 (with rich boys choice being S&W 4040). Sadly both can now be found only on second-hand market as plastic-framed stuff brings better profits (actually much better profits).

At least the OP will never have to practice malfunction drills since he'll only be carrying perfect firearms that never have the possibility of having a bobble. Sounds like a time saver to me.
