So here's my deal. I just recently bought a Mossberg Model 88. It's exactly what I was looking for, 12 gauge pump, 7+1, 20" cylinder bore, bead sight, nice and simple. Prior to purchasing it, I had it in my head that I was going to customize it and throw on some "bad-ass" accessories. Not only did I want my shotty to look bad-ass but I also figured the accessories would serve a useful purpose.

First part to come in was a pistol grip. I was satisfied with just the pistol grip alone. It was very comfortable, made the gun real easy to maneuver, and absorbed some of the recoil pretty good. But since in my head I was already committed to the other parts I went ahead and ordered them.

Next I got a 6 shot side saddle. Now yes I originally wanted this because I wanted to look like a bad ass. However it serves a useful purpose, atleast I think it does. See I don't keep a loaded gun in the house because there's kids in the house. I could just load the magazine without putting one in the chamber but I think it's still too much of a risk. I could throw the little lock on it which prevents it from being pumped but that thing is a pain in the ass and I don't want to be fumbling with it if I'm trying to unlock it in a hurry. So with the side saddle I can grab my gun and I am able to load it very quickly (I will continue practicing so I remain quick). Now I guess my only problem is that I just don't like the way it looks on the gun. I am being unreasonable? Do you guys think the side saddle serves a purpose? I don't like how it looks all bulky, although keep in mind the idea is to load all the shells from the saddle, not to have a full mag plus shells on the saddle.

Next part to come in was a tactical light. Again I was thinking it was going to look cool yet still serve a purpose. So obviously for light in my home at night if need be. But mainly when we go camping up in the mountains where there's sometimes freaks and weirdos and no cell coverage.

I don't know. I think I have buyers remorse because I fell in love with the way the gun looked and felt with just the pistol grip. I think with the light and the side saddle it just looks gimmicky and not as bad ass as I thought it would. I can get anxiety sometimes and right now since I'm somewhat regretting the light and saddle it's giving me real bad anxiety. So in a way I needed to vent but I would also just like to hear some of your guys' opinions. Should I stay or dump the accessories? In other words someone reassure me that I bought the right accessories! LOL:confused::uhoh:

The only thing needed is plastic or alloy rail that fits over magazine tube plus quality light or forend with small flashlight receptacle along with pressure activated switch the rest of the stuff is big waste of money.

Like you I always bought all of the tacticool stuff. However, I ended up selling most of it on E-bay. I would keep the pistol grip stock, because it will absorb recoil from the 88 much better. I only buy stuff for a purpose now. I put a red dot on my FN shotgun and it helps greatly with quick target aquisitions. I'm not a fan of side saddles. Flashlights can be good if it is for home defense. I wouldn't have them on more than 1 or 2 guns though. I magpulled my AR to the max but over the last two years all of the original parts have managed to be put back on the gun, and the laser and flashlight was sold on e-bay.

Pablo,
Instead of the rail I went with a clamp that clamps around the mag tube and around the light. I specifically didn't get the pressure switch because I really don't like that option.

Stop worrying about how it looks and start practicing with it. You stated that you were happy with the pistol grip, so take rest of the junk off and start practicing.

Sometimes, cool looking does not mean effective.

KYamateur,
I'm in a weird spot. Alot of people load their shotgun with alot of useless tactical crap because they think it looks cool. But me, I think my accessories are useful but they look crappy. I don't know what to do. Like with the saddle I can load my gun quickly and not have to fumble around opening a box of shells since I don't keep it loaded. But it just seems so bulky and gimmicky.

These seem ok. I have seen decent unit with bright light/laser at Dicks for about $40.
The good thing about tactical stuff is that it tends to be affordable on second-hand market.
Few weeks ago I looked at 870 Police Magnum with Remigton Ghost sites, "speed feed stock" (or whatever stupid stock with couple of spare cartridges is called). This is same shotgun Remington made for the FBI. Someone put Crimson Trace forend system with light on it the the price was just over $500. I passed on the "FBI Crowbar" because I already own 3" Ithaca pump.

Is your shotgun a PGO, or a stocked gun with a pistol grip?
If it has a stock, get a cuff. They don't look as bad as the receiver mounted shell holders, and help distribute the weight to the rear of the gun, which I find is helpful on the 7+1 Mossbergs.

If its a PGO, I'd rethink the tactical stuff that will only add more weight to the front of the gun.

Does it look terrible on my gun? All the Remington 870's we have at work have side saddles. I like them.

I would not think that putting shells in a sidesaddle as opposed to in the gun is childproofing it. You need to make better decisions as to how you store the gun (loaded or not). The rest is up to you.

Your opinion and you're entitled to it.

A basic shotgun like you bought is the best way to maximize your budget. All of those gizmos and gadgets add way too much weight. If you/re not careful, your gun will end up looking like this:

This is as far as I went with my M88.

Night Sight front bead
6 round side-saddle
Hogue Over Molded Front/Rear

To be honest I think that old school wood looks more "bad ass" I had changed the action slide/nut with a true M500 part to be able to swap to a wood youth set once I found one for a decent price.

Basic, but would get the job done if asked. It has since gone to a new home, replaced by a 20g 1100 semi-auto for the kids to shoot clays with.

I'd dump the gadgets (other than the PG stock and light) and spend the returns on ammo for target practice.

You definately want to tacticool to the max.
Note the following tacticool accessories: cellulosic stocks; microthin steel coating; tactical optics; ejection and reloading of the chamber can be accomplished by operating a single part with one hand; multiple shot magazines;

I have bought 2 "home defense" shotguns over the years - an 18" 870 & 20" 590A1 ......sold one, traded the other. I have come to the conclusion that If I go with a shotgun for a HD situation, a Wingmaster or Benelli will do just fine. Probably grab a 9mm or .45 though.

And they don't have to sit in the safe all the time waiting for trashy to break-in.......I can actually use them for hunting!

The only thing I will have on a home defense shotgun is a short barrel. No pistol grips, lights, side saddles...etc. Heat shields look good, but why bother? if one fantasizes about Hollywood break ins he/she could always keep a bandolier handy.

With the crazy laws we have today about children and guns in the house I would strongly advise you to get a safe. At school if the kid so much as makes a pistol shape with his hand or eats a pop tart you are going to have social services at your house if anyone says you have a gun.

The chances of a home invasion are slim in most areas. The chance that a child who has had fun with guns will do something "crazy" by school rules are high.

1madds,

Do you keep yours loaded? Rounds in the mag plus on the side saddle? I think I'm going to swap out the 6 round saddle for the 4 round. I originally thought I should go with the 6 round because I have a 7+1 shotgun so I figured what's the point of a 7+1 round capacity when I'm only going to be loading 4 or 5 rounds into it. But the 7+1 is fun on the range. I'm thinking having 4 rounds for HD should be fine considering many people have 4+1 round shotguns for HD and they only keep 4 in the mag when they store there's.
