Just another curiosity thread. I've noticed two styles of PGO shotgun. One is a severe grip angle, as if a straight stock had been sawed off. The second is like a pistol grip stock without the stock. I'm just wondering what the pros and cons of each are. The grip angle is completely different between the two.

Something like the actual pistol grip is best suited to breaching doors, where you're standing above what you're shooting, and pointing the gun down. You're not holding it up for any length of time, and it's not being aimed. The bird's head is better if you're using it in a traditional shotgun role. It's easier on the wrist, easier to point and aim, and easier to hold up for extended periods of time.

The pistol grip offers a shorter overall length, and positions the hand to use a push-button safety mounted in the trigger guard. A birds-head grip positions the hand to use a tang safety.

I do think it's interesting that most shotgun safeties are only easily reached with one style of grip or another. I'm surprised they haven't looked for options that are easy to reach with either style.

The "pro" of the example on top is that anyone can take a OEM wood buttstock and make one. It works very poorly. The other example is for people who just want to BUY one because it looks so kewl. I had one when I was young and dumb. A full stock shotgun is much more useful than a PGO. The only purpose of a pistol grip on a shotgun is for concealability. That's all it is good for. If you're a Secret Service agent or a U.S.Marshall wearing a suit - go for it. Otherwise get a buttstock.

The REM.870 safety is good to go with either grip.:neener:

That is my only complaint about the validity of Mossberg PGS.

I'm no expert, but I would imagine the one on top is good for a busted nose and forehead, while the one on the bottom is good for a broken wrist. Thoughts?

The one on top is easy to control if you tuck it into your chest. The one on bottom is for maxium compactness.
