I am looking at getting a Canik pistol and in my online shopping I of course checked out Bud's. I have a few questions concerning their "Make an Offer" function. Have any of you used this? I found this thread from 3 months ago

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=743483&highlight=buds+make+an+offer

and it doesn't seem too well liked. My first question is have the things said in this link changed much? Just the idea seems like a huge PITA. My other question is what amount of price drops have you seen, heard, or experienced? My last question is have any of you by chance already used the make an offer on a Canik S-120 in either Chrome or black? I doubt they will drop their price of $430 w/ make an offer down to the $350 for the L-120 that academy has, but if they will, the all steel is more appealing. Lol.

I used it on a inexpensive shotgun. I had to use all 5 of my "chances" and got it down to their "cash" price which was like $15 less than their regular price. Didn't matter too much to me as $15 was on top of an already good price so I went to put the weapon on layaway and, come to find out, the shotgun didn't meet their $300 limit to put things on layaway so I had to let the offer pass.

As far as if the things have changed from that thread, I didn't have to wait until business hours to get a response. I think I was surfing the web at 3 in the morning and was doing it. They must now have a certain limit that they will accept instead of a person checking it during hours.

I tried their make an offer thing twice. Based on that, and reading others' experiences, it seems like offers of 5% or less on new guns may work, a bit more on used. On the one hand, they've been trying to move the Caniks. On the other, I'm not optimistic that they'll take a offer of less than $410 or so ... but nothing ventured nothing gained ...

I recently got a Canik from Buds. I used GunBroker instead of "Make an Offer" and paid what I consider a very fair price ($350). Gun was as good as advertised. The only problem I had was paying for it. I couldn't pay online as the auction said I could and couldn't figure out where to go on the menu system for the phone line they listed. After some help from one of Bud's managers I figured out where to go an everything went smoothly from that point on.

Bottom line is call and talk to a live person if you buy from them. Once I did all the problems went away and I had the gun in 2 or 3 days.

Look on slickguns, they are always on there. I believe for a bit less than Buds.

The "make an offer thing is just a gimmick". They already took it into account before listing the price. Normally it's designed to make you feel like you did some negotiating, when they really took the 10 or 15 dollars into account when pricing the gun.

This.

IMO one of the best things about buying anything online is prices are usually at the low end of the market value. Contrast that with say a pawn shop that prices items with assumption that people will try to negotiate.

Though I can see the value of the option for used guns and clearance items; maybe in those cases they'd be willing to take a loss to get rid of something. But for everything else on the shelf I'd rather they just give me the price instead of me having to "negotiate" it out of them.

I used the "make an offer" option once, and was successful. They had a used Browning B92 in .357 up for "Team Members" for $1100. I submitted an offer for $1000, and didn't hear anything for a day and a half.

I was surprised when I got an email letting me know they accepted the offer. At $1000 the price was still high IMHO, but I'm glad I bought it. The gun looks like it was not used at all, and it sure is slick.

Make an Offer

I saved $100 yesterday at Buds "Make an Offer"...$449 for a Canik chromed S-120 and I got it for $349....seems like a good deal to me...

Seems like a waste of time to me, when I saw this new "feature" I deleted Bud's from my bookmarks.
I don't understand that. Why did it offend you that much?

I think the best chance of using it to real advantage is for the used guns they list, because their used prices are surprisingly high compared to what they sell new guns for.

I almost successfully negotiated a decent deal on a used S&W 4006 but it sold before I could get my counter offer in.

Their overall pricing strategy also takes into account a willingness to make a business decision to occasionally take less for an item. A sellers motivation can change based on temporary cash flow demands, year end taxes, excess inventory, dozens of different motivations that might end up giving a deal to some lucky buyer. That's just business; nothing wrong or misleading about it.
