I bought a G19 last week. Have only fired 1 round through it, but have racked the slide quite a bit manually.

I've noticed it appears as if the metal slide rail on the frame looks like it's "flaking off". Initially I thought it was factor grease that got scratched into the rail, but attempting to remove it has proven futile, and it looks clearly like the copper is under the steel-colored rail.

Is this normal? I've never seen this on my Glock 21. Should I be concerned? This is supposed to become my EDC gun.

I've attached a picture. It's not a very good pic, but you can prominently see what I'm talking about on the right rail. There is also evidence of it on the left rail but it doesn't really show in this pic.

Here's a direct link for those that can't see it: http://i.imgur.com/ywRGJHE.jpg

The copper is on the top right rail

I don't see a picture, but Glock has used a copper coloured lubricant on their slides for quite some time. There is nothing else copper coloured in a Glock, so this is probably what you are seeing.

They use copper under the plating, sometimes the plating flakes off the rails. It's no big deal purely cosmetic. Now go shoot it 999 more times.

Mine doesn't look like that and it's 1.5 years old. Looks to me like something agressive was used to clean it. If not, than I wouldn't worry about it because it will function I'm sure.

Mine has the same thing. Whether a quality issue or not, it doesn't seem to have affected my 19 in the slightest.

Congrats on the purchase and go enjoy that 19 pronto!

I had the same question when I bought mine :)

It's factory applied lubricant, as others said.

I've haven't worn through the plating on any of mine, yet. That would irk me, but I doubt it will affect anything. The low surface area of contact and the tennifer finish on the slide rails keeps things moving smoothly, with or without lubrication.

Recent manufacture gen 4? Made in America?

I'm so used to the good stuff, I'm afraid to buy a new Glock. I don't want to be disappointed.

Yeah I have a 2nd gen 17. I liked the copper grease that comes with the new gun so much that I made my own to keep the new gun smell!

1part NAPA copper Anti seize, 5 parts Peak synthetic grease. Inexpensive and it looks awesome.

Glocks in my opinion are BULLETPROOF. hehe

be safe.

I had (have) the exact problem. I call Glock and the tech said it's not a problem but if it ever is they'd replace the frame. I used some 600 grit emery cloth to smooth it down.

That was several thousand rounds ago and since the smoothing the condition has not gotten any worse.

I'm going to disagree. Your gun is FAILING. The only solution is to sell it to me. Since I am such a nice guy, I will graciously give you almost half of what you paid for it as long as you pay for the shipping.:D

I was also wondering about the one round...

Anyway, it looks like the factory lube, you're losing some of the plating. The plating is just cosmetic. Copper is often used as a "primer" for chrome plate.

I had a similar problem with one of mine. Kept shooting it, never an issue.

Recent manufacture gen 3. Shot it this past weekend for 300 rounds, no jams or anything.

I gotta ask...how/why did you only shoot one round?

Shot a water moccasin in the back yard with it. Usually I use a .22, but I couldn't help myself. I live out in the country.
