Hornady says to use One Shot to clean the LNL AP powder measure. Well I bought a can and after reading on this forum about how bad the chemicals are I don't want to use it. So what I was thinking is maybe acetone followed by graphite lube? Or maybe simple green followed by graphite lube.

I had a friend die of pancreatic cancer. He used to wash his hands off with brake cleaner after working on vehicles so seeing him be ravaged by the cancer has me looking for safer alternatives. Do you guys have any "safe" suggestions?

I wipe the crud off the ram etc, oil it, run the ram up and down a few times, wipe that off, re-oil. Grease on the pawls, oil on everything else.

The manufacturing/packing grease on the LNL AP is a chore to get off all the small parts. For the powder measure, I think the reason Hornady recommends One Shot (other than because it's their product) is that you need some form of a lube for the rotor and they don't want a wet lube to contaminate the powder. One Shot is a cleaner and also dry lube if left on and not wiped away.

I personally use the One Shot with my LNL AP since that's the vendor standard but I always wear nitrile "exam" gloves. I wear them whenever cleaning or lubing with anything on my bench for guns or reloading. Keeps the chemical residue and, most important for my wife and daughter who have asthma, the smell off my hands.

All the dry lubes I know of are aerosol sprays though if you're concerned about inhaling the vapors. I can tell you that unlike brake parts cleaner, One Shot doesn't seem to have a huge residue bloom/cloud, at least for how I use it.

Use the hornady ONE SHOT Cleaner and DRY LUBE.
Wear Nitrile Gloves.
REMOVE THE POWDER MEASURE O-RING FIRST.

After cleaning and drying the measure, use a small amount
of GRAPHITE and cycle through the measure a few times after
you reassemble it, don't forget to put the O-Ring back.

TALK ABOUT BAD SOLVENTS,
ACETONE vapors and liquid will eat the Nitrile Gloves.
Wear chemical gloves if you use it.
And a respirator also. (the proper one too, not just any)
Acetone will instantly go through your skin.

I cut a CLEAR PLASTIC SHEET PROTECTOR to fit
inside the tube (overlap it)
to protect from powders chemical reaction and discoloring
of the powder measures tube (available at Wal-Mart stationary area).

I cleaned my powder measures with alcohol and did not lube them, wasn't aware any lube was needed. The press didn't really need cleaning, just greased it and hit go.

The nice thing about the OneShot is that provides good corrosion resistance. I use only the OS for LNL lube, shell plate and powder dispense. A can will last a long time this way. If I recall I used brake cleaner to remove all the factory lube.

There is a video series on the Hornady lnl-AP on YouTube by 76Highboy (AKA Bill Morgan)
Google for HORNADY LNL-AP SET UP TIPS AND TRICKS (VIDEO #3 I BELIEVE).

You can also look on YouTube Channels for COFFEE WITH HIGHBOY.
A complete series of reloading & equipment videos.

I did a corrosion test last year using steel washers. I test One Shot case lube. It provided very little if any protection. The One Shot was rust quickly.

I'd avoid acetone before One Shot.

I used 95% IOS Alcohol to clean all my dies and press parts...mostly because I got got the OS case lube when I meant to get the Cleaner and Lube. You can use Simple Greenm but I think 95% is cleaner and less expensive.

I finally got some OS Cleaner and Lube and will likely go over my press and dies again

Hot water and dish liquid will clean off the packing oil. Eezox is a good rust preventive for the metal parts wipe with a small amount on a rag. Remove all excess. Smokeless Powder has graphite coating it that should provide sufficient lubrication.

I think I used mineral spirits to clean mine, although it's a good idea to follow it up with some form of anti-rust protection if you do use it. It worked very well for me.

I dont have a LnL but i clean my press with CRC-QD electric cleaner, it cleans but i do not think it has any lube capabilities. I lube after cleaning with Oil and/or grease where appropriate. Until i know for sure, i am "assuming" the electric cleaner is safe on plastic parts, it dries fast.

Just for fun i inlcuded the MSDS for both.

Brake cleaner reacted with the Hornady plastic powder container cylinder. Cylinder became sticky.

Get alcohol solvent at a hardware store. Rubbing alcohol has stuff in it besides alcohol.
