Hey folks! Ok, so I really need advice / help with a decision I need to make. At the moment I have two guns on hold for me. First is a Colt Defender 9mm and second is a Springfield EMP 9MM. The Springfield is EMP is about $300 more than the Defender. Here’s what I would like opinions on … is it worth the extra $300 for …

Night sights: I want night sights on my 1911 and the EMP comes standard with Trijicon inserts. The Defender does not come with night sights and it looks like the cheapest I can get a set for is $121 on Amazon and have them installed for $30 at my local gunsmith (also probably wait a week since they are backed up). So I’m looking at about $150 to get the sights put on the Defender.

Capacity: EMP 9mm holds one more round than the Defender 9mm.
Finish: Not a big deal but I do kind of like the fact the Defender is all silver compared to the EMP (I already have a Springfield Micro Compact .45 that looks like the exact same gun.

Reliability: What do you think on this one? I have read many forum reviews of both and like anything they are all mixed. Any personal experiences?
Trigger and safeties: Defender has a plastic trigger and EMP has an aluminum. Defender has a single safety and the EMP has ambidextrous.

I guess what it all comes down to are the bells and whistles on the EMP worth the price difference? I know that if I get the Defender I’m going to have to shell out at least another $150 for night sights, so that included I am looking at a $150 difference.

Anyone that has any suggestions, advise, or what they would do, I would appreciate all comments. Only looking at these two models of guns and not interested in anything else. Thank you so much everyone. Going to make up my mind in 48 hours so will appreciate seeing what everyone has to say.

The deal breaker for me is reliability. I don't own either one, but I've seen them both in training classes where you shoot all day long in a variety of positions and speeds.

The EMPs I've seen couldn't make it through the first hour without jamming, ultimately being ditched and the owner using a borrowed gun.

The one Defender I've seen in action ran flawlessly.

Thanks Moxie, i've heard the same but I also am hearing that the 9mm versions of both gun are quite a bit more reliable since it's a lighter recoil spring. Have a friend who has a EMP 9mm and has gone through about 800 rounds without a problem or hiccup. Could be he just lucked out and bought a good one.

Mainly interested in if you all think all the extras you get with the EMP over the Defender are worth the extra $300. I'm still really on the fence.

Very similar to the Colt Defender, I had a New Agent in 9mm. with the XS sight option. A very capable compact gun which had a quality build throughout along with great overall fit and finish. No first hand experience with the SA EMP.

Be sure you realize the EMP is a unique sized gun. It is "shrunk" down in size for the 9mm/40S&W size round while the Defender is your basic "Officer" size grip.

The magazine options for full size 9mm 1911 are few, even fewer for Officer size 9mm mags, and since the EMP is a unique gun, I think there is only one (maybe?) source for EMP mags.

Just something to think about.

I am looking at the same two pistols for consideration. Based on my research i am leaning more towards the Colt Defender in 9mm.

My only concern is the non-ambi safety, since i am a lefty, but i can learn to live with it. Maybe the custom shop can put one on?

Also, you mentioned it had a plastic trigger?? The Colt site shows an aluminum one:

■Novak® Low Mount Carry Sights with Dots
■Enhanced Hammer
■Standard Safety Lock
■Colt Upswept Beavertail Grip Safety
■3-Hole Aluminum Trigger
■Lowered and Flared Ejection Port

I would go with the Colt. As much as I wanted and EMP they really were/are hit or miss. People have them and love them or they report they could never get them to run.

These days the Colt seems to have better reliability.

My brother has an EMP. And my Father has one as well. They both run impeccably.

Liked my EMP a lot, but ultimately sold it to finance other purchases. I also have a Colt New Agent in .45, it's similar to the Defender but without sights. And I've handled and fired a few Defenders (but none in 9mm).

Both are great guns, but I'd say the EMP is the nicer gun with more features and a slightly better stock trigger. Whether or not that's worth an extra few hundred bucks is up to you.

FWIW I don't think current Defender triggers are plastic.

I had an EMP in 40 cal. I traded a new R1 for it straight up, it was one of my better trades, the guy didn't care since he obviously had a ton of money, and was trading his brother 2, 45 full sized pistols for a Beretta shotgun, It didn't matter to him which 1911, only that it be blued and full sized.
I liked the gun, bought VZ grips etc. for it, and traded it for another gun and cash.
The Customer service was excellent, and they sent me a new recoil spring assembly with no questions asked, even though I told the tech that I used locktight on the old one and it worked. It's a solid little gun, a little heavy in 40, the 9mm is much lighter, different materials. The Defender to me is not as pretty a gun, "if that matters", and never caught my eye. The solo is not bad now that they got it straightened out either.

Hey everyone, I want to thank everyone for the opinions and advice and give an update on my decision.

For some strange reason I actually decided to buy both the SA EMP 9mm and the Colt Defender 9mm. They are very similar pistols and each has their own merits so I decided to decide via trial by fire. They are both going to the range tomorrow with 200 rounds each going through them.

Here’s a few initial observations …

The one thing I can say right off is that the SA EMP seems to have a much nicer quality construction. The slide to frame is incredibly tight with no rattle at all and just feels like a high quality gun. The Colt Defender has a quite a bit of rattle in the slide.

- The EMP also seems to have a better / lighter trigger. The Colt Defender seems nice but does have a bit of a gritty trigger.

- I also dislike the fact that the EMP does not accept Officer size grips and your extremely limited on options.

- Both have excellent sights with the EMP having the advantage with Trijicon night sights. Colt is no slouch and I really love the Novak style sights.

- I think the biggest plus for the Colt Defender is the flush fit magazine. Springfield was insane not to offer 1 flush fit 8 round magazine and a 9 round extended. You wouldn’t think it makes a huge difference for inside the waistband carry but it does print more.

- The ambidextrous safety is a nice feature on the EMP, however adds extra width to the pistol. If I end up choosing to keep the EMP I’ll probably have a single sided safety installed.

None of this really matters until tomorrow when I take both out to the range and run them through their paces. I will be using a mix of Winchester White Box and Remington Goldensabers.

I’ll add a range report later on and give you folks a heads up.

Thanks again everyone so much for your input!

9mm

My vote goes to the EMP in 9mm.

Very nice gun.

Needed a trip to Springfield Armory to be reliable.

Their service was supurb.

Higly recommend.

Thanks so much everyone for your input. I posted a range report on both pistols with a Glock 19 tossed into the mix. Thankfully, absolutely zero problems with either gun!

Colt is the only company that's figured out how to make a 3" 1911 as boringly reliable as a Glock. I owned both a New Agent and an EMP. The EMP only lasted two weeks and never even made it out of the gunstore. Bought it and took it into their range. Slide wouldn't lock back after last shot. They sent it back to SA, and when it returned I couldn't make it through a mag without multiple failures.

Get the Colt.

I just dumped another 600 rnds of 9mm lead reloads down my EMP with not a single issue. Neat gun and surprisingly accurate for its size and caliber.

I would rate it a very reliable gun overall. Just don't feed it crappy ammo and its happy.
