    AR Rifle for hunting

It happened again this weekend. I had couple people over to hunt hogs this weekend. One was shooting bolt action rifle and two were shooting AR-15 rifles. I put each shooter up in a tree stand at the edge of hardwood hammock with pig pipes about 100 yards from the stand. Each shooter was...

    New barrel for Savage 10

I don't want to spend a lot of money on it as it will be my "truck" rifle. It will sit behind the seat for days at a time and get pulled out occasionally.

    New barrel for Savage 10

I picked up a cheap Savage model 10 FP in .308 Winchester from a co-worker yesterday. The bad news is that the barrel is no good as it has rust and corrosion in the bore and outside as if it had fired corrosive ammo and didn't clean it (is there corrosive .308 Winchester ammo?). The good news...

7mm vs 30 cal elk hunting debate

I've seen many times where the guy shooting the "smaller" guns kill better than the guy shooting the "big" gun. It's usually due to a lot of guys not being able to handle the recoil/muzzle blast of the big gun so they don't shoot so accurately. Above everything else, you must be able to place...

    Okla. Hogs............

Good job with the revolver! I've been using a Ruger Flattop 357 loaded with cast 180gr WFN-GC bullet with enough H110 to get it up to 1370 fps out of the 4 3/4" barrel. That load will penetrate a 200 pound hog shoulder to shoulder and leave a nice exit wound. A good shot to the head or neck...

Commercial hog bait and trap wise hogs

One item that never fails to attract hogs is those Christmas fruit cakes. You know, the kind that some strange gave you that you know is re-gift from last Christmas. People at work knows I collect them after Christmas so I usually get couple. I cut them into pieces and leave them out by the...

    Which Hogs are Worth Cooking

I usually shoot a hog or two every month for food for my family and friends. In doing this for past dozen years I've learned couple things. 1. Never assume large hogs are not good to eat. One of the best eating hog I ever had was a 225 pound sow. On the other hand, I had a 125 boar that...

    Question about hog hunting

It's not the arrow but the Indian. A hog shot through the shoulder with a 30-06 will die but not before it runs few hundred yards and go into the thick stuff where you'll never find it. My little boy uses an AR-15 carbine in 5.56 loaded with Winchester Q3131 and only take head or upper neck...

Might have hogs, want to know if I need a different .308 load.

We shoot a lot of hogs at our property in FL as they do a lot of damage to our farm land and eat/destroy a lot of crop. Your pictures indicate you have a pig visiting your property. We bait hogs out to the pasture using sour corn mash which is combo of feed corn, yeast, hot water, left...

What is the purpose of 22WMR (magnum) rifle?

I recently picked up a used Ruger M77/22 in 22WMR a.k.a. 22 magnum. It's a nice looking rifle and it shoots pretty accurate with 2 out of the 3 ammo I've tried so far. It is the first and only 22WMR caliber rifle I have. While shooting the rifle I just don't see what is the purpose of the...

    9MM

My rule of thumb for 9mm pistol loads. If loading cast or plated bullets use 147gr bullets to about 850 fps. If loading jacketed bullets use 115gr bullet to about 1,200 fps. In general I have found heavy/slow loads will give good accuracy and reliability with minimal leading when used with...

    Toughest 9mm brass?

I have found CCI 9mm brass to be very tough. For 9mm target load I've always used Federal brass for no other reason than that I have a lot of once fired Federal from a police range.

More Split Necks Since Switching To Pins For Cleaning Brass

I think manufacturers have changed the brass formula in last few years. I too have noticed much greater number of split neck after just one firing... about 6% with 22-250 where as 20 yards ago I would be surprised to fine one. It seems brass are more brittle now than in past.

    45-70

What are you planning to hunt? I load 375 grain WFN cast bullets with 15 grains of Unique and get 1,350 fps. It has good accuracy and has mild recoil... even my wife shoots it. That load has stomped couple of deers and hogs out to 90 yards with one shot. I have not had the opportunity to...

    Defensive/Multi-purpose Rifle

I have all the usual "black" or "tactial" rifles in my safe and shoot them frequesntly BUT if S really HTF I'm grabbing my Remington 870 with 18" barrel and extended mag tube. After SHTF (or while S is HTF) I'm going to keep low and out of sight. If bad guys are off in the distance I'm going...

    Best Value Hunting Rifle

IMHO you can't beat the Savage 10/110 series rifles for value. I've seen 110 rifles with synthetic stock for $259 at Walmart. It may not be the best looking rifle in the world but they work and are usually very accurate. Other choices are Winchester and Remington and they make good rifles...

When do you deem an AR-15 reliable?

I agree that the best way to test the rifle is to take it to a shooting school and run about 2,000 rounds in 3-4 days. One thing I have seen at shooting schools are people who bring rifles that they have only fired at the range where rifles were never fired to the point of heating up. They...

few questions regarding Eotech holo sights

In past 10+ years I have and used EOTech, Aimpoint, ACOG along with couple of traditional scopes and if I had to choose just one it would be the Aimpoint. EOTech is nice and I like them a lot and with their open design for high speed close range work they can't be beat. ACOG is nice too...

    Marlin 336 in 30-30 for deer/hog. 150gr or 180gr ammo?

"according to my notes?" Yes, I keep notes on each of my guns. When and where it was purchased, how much $$$, etc. I also keep notes of performance at the range each time I got. I keep informations like ammo used, range and group size, number of round fired, any failures to fire, etc...

115 or 124gr 9mm "Middle of the road" load?

I use 4.4gr of Winchester 231 to load Berry 124gr plated bullets. Very reliable and accurate in all my 9mm pistols and a revolver. Works very reliably in my MAC-10 too. Been loading and shooting this combo for 10+ years and I'm very happy with it's performance.
