What model to start competing with?

" ... the best score at IDPA Nationals in 2010 was shot by the SSP division champion, who beat the CDP and ESP Masters' times by about 9 seconds using a Glock" Dave Sevigny drives us all crazy ... he could probably win if he was using a T/C Contender ... up until this year, I always said if...

    An Uncommon Colt

Sounds like an interesting piece. I carry sort of the opposite, commander length slide on an officer length frame, the Sig RCS. Very light gun and kicks like an angry mule but shoots right to the point of aim, has yet to malfunction though I've only put about 350 rounds through it so far and...

Im ready for my first 1911 style weapon

There are a lot of good choices out there. Just make sure you do get 1) a beavertail that won't dig into your hand or you'll be spending money to put one on if you shoot the gun very much. I have a lump of scar tissue in my hand from firing an old style commander 2) dovetailed in front sight so...

Im ready for my first 1911 style weapon

You are in luck to be shopping at the right time. http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/71/products_id/26335 S&W builds an awesome 1911. or, not that much cheaper, but if you want to save a few bucks, one of my shooting buddies has been shooting the Taurus for some time...

What model to start competing with?

Since you said your buddy wants to shoot in production class, he's stuck with one of the flimsy plastic guns for now, or if he wants to spend a little more money, a Sig DAO or DA/SA. You'll notice that the overall winners in most IDPA matches lately have been CDP (.45 acp 1911) or ESP which is...

    New 1911 Mainspring Housing

Go with the checkered. It will stabilize the gun best in your hand.

$1,000 (or so) for TWO 45 acp

Buy the Sig RCS for under $1,000 when Buds has them in stock and then practice with it. Commander size steel slide with a lightweight frame, weighs 34 ozs with 7 rounds of 230 gr hardball in it and carries as easy as a J frame Smith, has night sights and the only thing you'll need to add is a...

ruger new model blackhawk .357 with bisley grip frame

It makes a nice conversion. I wanted Pachmayr decellerator grips on my .41 Bisley to help with the recoil of the 200 yard load that was loosening my fillings. Unfortunately, it wasn't made at the time for the Bisley. But, I also have a .44 Super Blackhawk so just swapped the triggers, hammers...

    At my bedside?

When there were kids in the house, my X's revolver had a combination lock through the frame so the loaded cylinder couldn't be closed until the lock was opened. My .45 was between mattress and box spring on my side. Now that there are no curious little ones in the house, XD .45 on the floor...

Favorite defense ammo for the XD .45?

The magazine that is in my gun has a Glaser silver point on top with twelve 230 gr. Remington Golden Sabers waiting their turns. The remaining magazines are loaded with 230 gr. hardball. I have yet to try anything in mine that didn't run through it without a hitch.

Can I get a .357 SIG barrel for my .40 S&W Sig Sauer P239? What are the best makers?

Ask about a recoil spring when you buy the new SIG barrel. IIRC the .357 runs a couple pounds heavier spring.

Anyone ever see/use sights like these?

If you plan to shoot IPSC or IDPA, they're not legal since the rule interpretation has been that those are not "notch and post". I tried some of the BIG dot sights with the shallow V rear too and wind up selling the gun so I didn't have to swap them off again.

    XD Mag Question

yep ... 9mm mags interchange between all old XD (not XDm) models, same with 40's, and 357 SIG magazines are interchangeable with 40 S&W magazines ... the only quirks I've encountered are that 16 round 9mm mags tend to expand if left loaded and won't drop free, unless Springfield has remedied...

    Tell me why I should...

Never fired one in 10mm. The one I owned for a couple of weeks was a .45 acp and wouldn't run with any of the ammo my other 45's run on. My best friends have had two of them that are as reliable as bricks. So, spotty quality ? They did eventually break one of theirs with bowling pin loads and...

    Browning HiPower in 38 Super?

you might be able to have a barrel chambered for the longer case, use .38 Supercomp cases and short bullets, like the 140 gr. semiwadcutters that are made for the Colt Python ... awful lot of trouble just for an interesting exercise though

Life expectancy of a Sig p226?

The 60,000 round estimate is the closest I see here. I have an old "folded" slide 9mm made in '84 that I've put over 25,000 rounds through in IPSC and IDPA, including the practice for both and the gun is no more worn than it was when I bought it. Do check the SIG forum for spring replacement...

    IDPA and cover

I hope you're right, Sam, on all the positive things you say about IDPA and IPSC both doing well. And I do have to agree that PPC isn't much fun to watch, as much as I enjoyed shooting it when I lived close enough to a club that shot it. And no, one three second penalty didn't much hurt my...

    IDPA and cover

I have heard that the rules are up for review and that suggestions are being solicited from the SO's. And I try to not argue with anyone who is giving their time and effort to help with a match. I've been in their shoes and remember how frustrating it can be. But SO's like the one who gave me a...

    1911 loose barrel bushing durability?

A lot of this comes down to the question of how much you shoot your gun. If you're out at the range burning a couple of hundred rounds or more every week, then you're putting some wear on your gun. If you're like most people and might shoot a hundred rounds a year then the gun is going to...

    ramped barrel

I have an old .38 Super with a ramped barrel that I want to change over to shoot 9mm for now and put a .45 top end on later. I tried a ParaOrdnance barrel to see if it fits the cut in the frame and it doesn't. Is this the Nowlin/Wilson cut then ? It's a Caspian frame, if that matters. Also...
