What do you do with the "extra" when you are and out about and have to unload? With my 10rd mag I've always carried 9 +1 and when needed refill the mag so as not to have a round floating about. Everywhere I see guns listed as "plus 1" capacity.

In the unlikely event that I would have to unload my sidearm I am guessing that the "plus 1" will go into the BG also.

Seriously though when I unload it goes in my pocket or the safe with the gun.

welcome to thr. my gun and mags are always topped off, i see no reason to unload a gun wheni am out and about. when i am at the range then yes, the sd ammo comes out and is on stand by until i get done shooting and then it goes back in how many ever with the mag full and the chamber with a round in it.

Why short yourself the round that might be the key in a fight? With me, my carry guns are in my control, so they stay loaded all the time.

Thanks all. I was wondering because sometimes on road trips I come across places where only locked and unloaded transportation is allowed. Just as an example: a drive from hampton roads up to Blue Ridge Parkway where I can carry here to there but must have gun unloaded in trunk when ON the parkway.

I keep one of those styrofoam trays from an ammo box (broken in half) in my center console. The only time I unload is when I get to the range, or if I'm leaving VA to go into MD. The range requires unloaded guns before entry, and good defensive ammo is too expensive to shoot constantly, so I need to empty the magazine anyway. Maryland just sucks, so I take it out there too. I simply put my 10+1 into the tray in my console, and the pistol in it's case.

I had this discussion W/ another member recently & have come to the conclusion that the extra cartridge causes more problems than it solves. I don't carry it.

Here's another question ; For those that have to unload do you rotate your ammunition to avoid set back?

I always +1 on all of my guns, and I have never had a problem doing so - it results in no reliability issues for me (9mm 1911, P32, Makarov, also did same on guns I used to have - USP45F, 1911 .45). If I have to unload, the +1 goes in a pocket.

Most of my pistols have 3 magazines. I simply load one of those magazines short one round and place the +1 in that magazine.

I figure if I've used up all three magazines and still need one more round, I've got bigger issues...

Parogon, fletcher: I was thinking having a loose round leads to more questions or "forgetting" one in my pocket leads to:what: in certain places. treo: After reading a few boards I started rotating, figure it couldn't hurt.

When I unload to try holsters at the shop or let a close friend handle my weapon, I just "Barney Fife" the +1 (it goes in the shirt pocket until I reload. I also rotate the +1 round to avoid setback.
