I always top off my mag and put it back in the gun. Might as well fill to capacity.

As one person has pointed out that extra round can get a little impractical if you ever need to unload. I load 12 and an extra magazine. If 23 won't do it that last round is mine

My first dealing with an auto was in the military when we would draw our 45's for duty they would hand us 3 magazines each with 5 rounds I was told if you leave one fully loaded they would take a set. After I got out and went to work for the sheriff office we used revolvers till the sheriff at that time issued the narc berettas. I kept the magazine shy one round always one in the chamber. When a new sheriff brought weapons for all the deputies we went to a 3 day course and was told to load the weapon with a full magazine rack it then top it off so that the way i carry my duty weapon. My personnel beretta that I got after they took the other one away I still keep one round shy in the magazine really don't know why except when I'm checking it out wiping it down or something I can return the round that was in the chamber to the mag and not have a loose round rolling around. I know don't make a lot of sense but it just me.

be safe

I voted sometimes but almost always I do load up +1, why not in most cases give yourself whatever timy edge you might get?

IIRC some guns like the BHP feed better with some mags if the mag is loaded with 12 rounds.

Always have one chambered. Not having a round chambered is akin to having an unloaded gun. Often, you just don't have the time to rack the slide.

Always!!!!

I agree with a lot of the other Posters-Why would you Not? The Weapon is ready to fire out of the Holster-One more Advantage you may Need in a Defensive Situation.

The Best to All!

+1 for "+1"

But really if 16 won't do it whats 17 gonna do?

I don't know...

...let me think...don't pressure me here...

...maybe stop one more person.

It isn't really any more impractical than unloading like normal. You drop the mag, eject the chambered round, and...well...there really isn't anything else.

And that whole "last round is mine" business is kinda creepy...you obviously haven't read the USMC Rules for Gunfighting.

In fact, everyone should read the USMC Rules Gun Fighting.

Those who don't +1 should pay special attention to the following points:

2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Your life is expensive.

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.
This is especially for the guy who wants to off himself instead of using his last round to kill one more bad guy.

It depends

In any pistol with external hammer, safety and decocker (for example my Bersa Thunder 40) I do not have any problems with it.

I still sometimes do with my Kel-Tec P-11 (DAO)

I would NEVER do it in a Glock...and actually this is one of the reason I will never buy one....no matter how trustworthy is their safety system.

To be honest... I hope alot of people read this post.... I carry my magazines with the rated capacity of the magazine... then I load it in the gun and load and lock....... I don't worry about adding the "extra round"

I have been unfortunate enough to be in two gunfights in my life.... and I'll let you know... I did not empty a magazine either time. Once I was carrying a .40 S&W, the other time a .9mm......... I only fired minimal rounds..... The BG lost both times... once he lost his life.... the second he lost the fight.... it didn't matter how many rounds I had or if I had an extra magazine or not.

I know... we all carry extra magazines... and I also carry them.... but hopefully we won't need them.

I hope this helps someone that is new to CCW.

If the magazine is intended to carry "X" amount of bullets then I put "X" amount of bullets in it. Reducing your count by one seems silly to me. Why? What practical purpose would it serve?

The idea that most of us will ever empty the magazine or even need the spare magazine is unlikely.
The chances that we will need a gun at all is unlikely. I wouldn't leave it at home because of that though.

This is discussed regularly, and the results seldom vary.
Actually, it hasn't.

Folks are just not reading the question, and parroting the answer above them.

OK...I guess you completely missed the point TBT...

Because the other part of my post which you left out when you quoted me said:
But I still +1 from the standpoint of just in case and if you can why not.

All I was pointing out is that MP3Mogul has a good point in saying that most of us who ever have to use our firearms will not likely use all the rounds. I think he makes a good point by adding a dose of reality and grounding to the discussion. And if you ever read the Armed Citizen section in an NRA publication with any frequency, you'll find that most of the stories do not involve people firing all the rounds in their gun.

But I still will carry the maximum my firearms can hold for "just in case and if I can why not" reasons.

Absolutely.

If I had a gun that wouldn't operate as designed (with a full mag), I'd sell it.

If I wanted to carry less ammunition, I'd carry something larger than .45 caliber. ;)

Wouldn't do me any good if the gun wasn't chambered and ready to go. Besides, the lieutenant gets mad if we go out without our guns being ready for work.

The bad guys tend to be inconsiderate and not give us time to rack the slide like they do in the movies, even though it looks really cool to do that before you get in the action.

I should. I wish I did. I really ought to.
But I don't. My carry piece isn't entirely drop-trustworthy, so I carry with an empty chamber. That will soon change.

Notorious

Go back and read the OP, he's not asking if you carry condition 3 he's asking if you load your magazine, chamber a round then top off the magazine.

personally I leave my carry gun loaded all the time anyway but it's just not worth the hassle for one shot (IMO)

Yup. Standard drill: Fill Mag, Insert Mag, Rack slide, Remove Mag, Insert a round, Re-insert Mag. Eleven is better than ten. Fifty would be better yet, but I cannot seem to conceal a drum magazine full of 45acp, to say nothing of the weight.
