looking for a 1911. there is a mil spec at my range i use every time im there and love it but i want my own. original thoery was to buy a nice lightweight, commander size to carry and a full size w adj sites for the range...have been going around in cirles for 2 months trying to figure it out-1st i had my heart set on getting the kimber cdp II pro-lots of money and i hear bad things about the quality but a very nice looking piece... then saw the springfield loaded lw champion (could get that and a loaded full size for not much more than the kimber) and the sw 1911sc and finally have been looking at the d.wesson cbob. also saw a deal on an ed brown Kobra Kary(still 1400 was alot for a carry piece) ..mind you i have only handled these guns, i have not had the opportunity to fire any of them as the only pieces i have seen for rent at the ranges i have been to are SA (i didget to fire a guys kimber last week)

SO, heres the big question what is the best 1 gun solution to my predicament..is there one or do i just buy a full size springer gi/mil and build on it and get a quality carry gun in a commander size (likely the SA lw champ)
thoughs , pinions etc appreciated

I carry my full size Kimber Custom Target with adj. sites once in a while. It's a little heavy but you get used to it. The DW bobtail is much nicer to carry and I will have a range report for you tomorrow.

A commander sized piece will do everything a gov't sized will and has the advantage of being slightly more compact. 1911 is a fantastic design (been around for nearly 100 years). I own a kimber right now and would not hesitate to purchase a springfield armory pistol either. They both make fantastic pistols in this model. If money were no object, I would get a 2011 framed STI in 9x23 winchester with the longest mags available, a 4.25" bbl and novak low profile adjustable tritium sights.

I have no idea how much that would cost, more than I have to spend on one right now though (plus the reloading dies, brass, powder, bullets).

If I could get only one 1911, I'd look on the gun sales/auction sites for a pre series II Kimber in the full size/gov't model or if you lucked up, you might find a commercial model Colt pre series 70. The Kimber will come with the beavertail grip safety and nice sights, etc. but still has the original 1911 type fire control set up = no firing pin safety system. Carrying a full size 1911 is not that bad, a good holster makes all the difference....plus, practicing with exactly what you carry is a plus....of course, having two of the same is even better ! ;)

Carrying a full sized 1911 in the proper holster is not out of the question even for a small framed guy. I do it once in a while too. But since I own a Colt Officer's ACP, that gets carried more often than my other 1911's. (I prolly pack my SP101 more often that that one though)

So.. If you want, you can get the Kimber, and install an adjustable rear sight from Dawson Precision. It sits lower than Kimber's (Bomar) target sight.

A Milspec 1911 cannot compare to a Kimber of any configuration. I've got a Series II and don't have complaint with the trigger functionality or the external extractor that has never given me issue.
