Hey guys, I am looking for a rifle to take with me backpacking as a plinking and small game rifle. The 10/22 seems to be a universally loved rifle, but I've always loved the idea of a Henry AR-7 (I think we can see where I'm going with this)

Any chance someone with a 10/22 (any of the models) can give me the dimensions of the barrel when it's been removed from the receiver, and the receiver without the stock? I'm trying to determine if it's reasonable to try to modify a stock to hold the rest of the rifle in it like the AR-7 does.

If anyone has another 22 rifle that might fit the bill easier, by all means feel free to include that too!

Thanks guys,
Chris

Might also want to consider a Marlin Papoose Model 70 PSS. Stainless steel construction, 16.25" barrel with an overall length of 35.25" when assembled. Weight is 3.25 pounds. Available from Gallery of Guns for $345.26.

I think the pappooose is a slick rifle, and I love my Marlin guide gun so that might be just the ticket.

If anyone here has one and a tape measure, I'd love to get the specs on the receiver length

The 10/22 receiver is going to be too wide to fit inside the stock. Have you looked at the takedown models?

Kayak;

I'll also point you to the Ruger 10/22 Takedown model. It comes with a discreet nylon carry bag that will hold it, and a scope with QD mounts, plus six of the 25 round magazines. If you do the headspacing procedure correctly, they can be very nicely accurate for what they are.

Another possibility is the Marlin TDS. It also comes with it's factory supplied carry bag. BUT: 1. They were only made for three years & are a collector's item. 2. Therefore they generally are rather expensive, think four figures. And 3. If you put one in a kayak & get it soaked the Marlin collector's society will probably put out a contract on you. That being said, it's a very nice little take-down lever gun that's a hoot to shoot.

A normal 10/22 barrel will be 16" or longer.

This is an SBR 10/22 (always ready to fire), M6 .22/.410, factory takedown 10/22 and 16" .22 AR.

AR-7', same SBR 10/22, Browning 22 and Savage .22/20ga.

They all have their place. Of you don't know what your after the Savage is the best. If you want the lightest the AR-7 does it. If you want kids to want to shoot it the AR is a good choice. If you want small, quiet and ready to go the SBR is a good pick. The Scout is valuable and good to have if if you want to have one of everything. The Browning is the one to have if you want the nicest takedown made.

Nice compact/take-down rifle collection you've got there! Really like the SBR 10/22.

Jmorris, thanks for the input! Is your AR7 one of the newer ones that can fit 2 extra mags in the stock?

Also, any chance you could tell me how thick the stock is on that rifle?

CB900F, I like the idea of the 10/22 takedown, but after looking into it, I think it's just too heavy for me.

Thanks for all the input though guys!

Never considered it with a repeater, think about it a lot with a crickett rifle in 17hmr. That is what I consider the ultimate survival gun. Good on all critters smaller than whitetail, although I hear reports of poachers using them with good success.

Kayakman;

The Ruger website lists the bare take-down at 4.6 lbs. Now I realize that's without the scope & mounts or any ammo in the carry bag, but how much lighter than that does it have to be?

Mine is not the latest version. One mag stays in the receiver and another has its own little pocket. Stock is wider then most at 2 3/4", not as nice of a trigger as some of the others but the lightest by a good margin.

Hey guys, sorry for the late reply, I've been doing my clinical ER rotations and have been super busy.

Acera, I do not need the 10/22 take down dimensions, thanks though!

Jmoris, thanks for the info, that is definitely wider than I was expecting, but I think it's probably going to fit into one of my smaller day packs better than the Marlin or ruger would.

CB900F, thanks for the heads up! For some reason I had 6.5 pounds in my head as the 10/22 weight.

Right now I'm kind of wrestling back and forth between the AR7 and the Marlin, mainly due to price.
