I have a 10/22 that the trigger isn't resetting. It's had about 700 rounds through it. I cleaned it last weekend, then took it out and did some shooting. After about 100 flawless rounds the gun started acting up.

When I pull the trigger the gun fires, ejecting the spent brass, stripping off a fresh round and chambering it. The issue is the trigger is not resetting. If I reach up and rack the gun the trigger resets and will shoot.

Is this a sear issue? I am not too familiar with the 10/22 since this is my first one and I have owned it about 3 weeks. I haven't disassembled it yet because I am too lazy to drive 30 minutes just to sight it in again, hoping that it's a fix I can do without taking the barrel clamp off and unstocking the gun. (Unlikely, I know) Thanks for the help in advance!

The 10/22 is easy to disassemble, and should be able to do it without losing your zero. The trigger group is attached to the receiver with large pins. It comes off in one complete unit once the action is removed from the stock.

The issue could be any number of minor things. Possibly a broken disconnector spring resulting in hammer follow. Fortunately, the 10/22 trigger group is fairly simple to work on and you should have no problems sorting it out. I managed to install a new hammer and sear myself with no problems. If you suspect a problem there, you might as well install an upgraded hammer / sear kit. It dramatically improves your trigger pull.

Take the entire trigger assembly out and make sure it is all correct. It isn't that hard, just time consuming. Do not lose any parts and keep track of all of them. Youtube has tons of videos if you get confused.

if you put something in wrong, I forget what, you have a part slip, which will cause it to fail to reset, it's easy to figure out, and zero has more to do with sights and receiver and barrel, none of which you will touch. So get pics/schematics of how the trigger group should be, put it back together and see what the problem is, some of these things, you take it apart put it together and it work, never now what was wrong, it just works now, been there meself a time or two

The 10/22 has a spring and plunger behind the trigger leg, this is the reset. Make sure this is lubed and not binding. Some well mess with this spring in a attempt to reduce trigger pull and it well result in reset problems.

At the range duplicate the reset problem then see if you can reset by pushing the trigger leg forward. If it does then it's the reset spring/plunger, if not it's in the trigger/sear. You well need to drop the FCG and look at it. Plenty of youtube stuff to walk you along.

I replaced the stock hammer and springs in my 10/22 TD with the VQ kit in an effort to reduce the horrible stock trigger pull. Afterwards the trigger was great but I was getting reset issues as described. I replaced the VQ trigger plunger spring with the stock one, keeping all the other VQ parts installed and the issue went away and the rifle is now perfect. Given that experience I would suggest checking the trigger spring and plunger first as madcratebuilder suggested above.

I can state from experience that accidentally swapping the trigger return spring and the sear spring will cause that exact problem.
