10 round mags for 1911?

You can get them from www.cheaperthandirt.com, amongst other places.
They will definately not sit flush the the bottom of the grip on a standard 1911. The largest capacity flush-fitting magazine will hold 8 rounds.
ParaOrdanance makes a 1911 style handgun with thicker grips that hold double stack magazines. These hold 10 or more rounds IIRC. Wilson Combat and Kimber also make double stack 1911s, and they have polymer frames.

Yeah I've been intrigued by paras for years, but I've heard some bad things about them in the reliability dept. I've looked at the Kimbers but I just can't get used to the polymer frame on them. Looks like an abomination. 
I think I might have found a 9 round mag that fits somewhat flush. I guess that would work, at least with one in the chamber that would give me 10.

I think you're asking for trouble. Reliability will certainly suffer, usually seriously, when you go for that extra round or two. I have 7, 8 and 10 round mags (the 10s stick out the bottom quite a bit), and the 7s are flawless, the 8s are close and the 10s aren't bad, but they're no 7s.

I have about five 7's and a 10 round chip mccormick that sits in my drawer and I never use. The damn thing will never chamber the first round when you drop the slide! 
Nothing can be simple can it.....I figured I'd go with a single stack to lose the reliability problems with the doublestack and I can't even squeeze and extra round or two out of em. :banghead:

What's the big deal? I don't really mind the 7rnds in the mag and one in the pipe. I've started carrying a spare mag all the time again with my single stack - I stopped carrying a spare when I was toting my G29 because the thing was so damn bulky. So I actually hove more ammo on me now than I used to with my double stack compact. Even with my USP, it only had 14 if I didn't carry a spare.
The benefits of the single stack as a carry piece far outweigh that missing one or two rounds - don't sweat it.

For a CCW I wouldn't particularly mind, BUT this is going to be for a police duty gun. So I'd really like to have some more ammo in the gun than 8 rounds.
I'm also trying to find a mag carrier that will hold at least 4 mags to get the ammo load I'm lookin for. Not the easiest of items to locate, but I remember when the NJSP were using P7's they had a quad mag pouch for their 8 rounders.

I've got 3 Megger 10 round mags that work great in all my 45's including a Marlin Camp Carbine 45.

I think having a magazine that sits that far out of the well might be a bad idea on a duty gun. Im not sure about the politics in your department but, you may end up scaring someone who is in a position to make your life more complicated by having a sticky-outy magazine.
Asside from that, IMHO having a magazine exposed like that can present a reliability problem. The magazine is generally the weakest link in a pistol and having a portion of it unprotected is just begging to get smashed against something in a struggle and fail to work when you need it.

If politics are a problem, you can still carry a regular mag in the gun and ten rounders as your spares.
My experience with mags of more than 7 rounds is that some work and some don't. Every 7 rounder that I have ever had worked perfectly, and the Wilson 8 rounders worked well too but they were a little harder to insert into the mag well. I guess like any other mag, you would just have to pick the best brand you could find and try a couple.

I own 8 Wilson Combat 10rds mags. I've used them in my Springfield and S&W for IPSC. The only problems were due to the mag-holders ... not allowing a smooth draw the top round would get kitty-wompus and, without correction (during a speed-load) would jam the slide.
Two things:
1. Get Safariland 773 mag-holders (come with rollers to prevent aforementioned problem and with adjustable cant afford excellent draw) Oh ya, you're a cop ... you probably don't have room for those ... get the regular Safariland leather duals then ... no worse off than with 8rds 'ers at that point anyhow
2. Reloads are MUCH nicer with the longer sticks ... particularly with a mag-well ... which wouldn't be a bad idea and, if you get the blue one (again from Wilson) it will probably go unnoticed by the "normals"
Otherwise, order an SV or STI ... as a cop, you can buy the hi-caps (w/Dawson +1's, you can get 20rds in a .40sw without sticking out much below the mag-well).

Quad-mag pouch: There are several out there, including Bianchi. One guy is making them out of leather.
Problem is that this puts all of your reloads in one locations and that not necessarily conducive to weak-hand, wounded-man drills. For example, I have two mag in a set of BladeTech's single-mag pouches located b/t 0700 and 0800 on my duty belt. These mags are inaccessible by my strong hand and that means I'm in deep doo-doo should my left hand be injured or otherwise occupied. That also means I need something either closer to the buckle, around 1100hrs, or something behind the pistol at approx. 1600hrs.
Two mags to port. Two mags to starboard. No need for a quadmag pouch, but I might just buy one in the near future.

Of the ten McCormick 10 rd mags that I have, 6 of them will not lock the slide back, the wobbly follower passes right by the slide stop. If you read McC's "guarentee" they blame that on everything but their mags. My Wilson 8 rounders all work great.
