I want to get a military surplus rifle to leave trigger-locked in a case by the front door and be able to throw into the SUV when we head out into the boonies.

I've already got a Swiss K31. Should I get another one, or should I go for a Mosin Nagant? Yugo Mauser?

So the question is -- What's your favorite mil surp rifle available today for around $100?

VG Yugo SKS from AIM Surplus, $109 with free shipping last time I looked.
[Edit:] Whoops, looks like AIM is out. Regardless, an SKS would be a good choice if you can find one for ~$100

M/N M44 no doubt..........damn things really kick though....lots of surplus ammo out there.........took the bayonet off mine, will have to shoot and see if it changed the bullet impact that much.......they claim it does...............another if you can find one around $100 is the British Enfield 303.........I found one in western Minnesota in really good shape for $135 and it really shoots good..........it is one of my favorites to shoot.........am looking for a K31 now............

If you can find one of the 303 British for $100, that would be a good choice, given that the rifle is in reasonable condition.

I bought a Mosin-Nagant M-44 last September for $50 from my local Dunhams Sporting Goods. And, yes the bayo folded vs. extended does make a major point of impact chane. Elevation remains, windage shifts about 4" at 100 Yds. Your Mileage [windage] Will Vary, rifle dependant

Besides, with the bayo extended, you can always fend off 1 or 2 while ya stuff in another stripper clips worth of ammo...

Well, you already have one of the best. The only other equilavent rifles are the Enfields. Personally I like the No 4 Nk I or Mk I*. Everyone should eventually have one, along with a No 1 Nk III. But be warned, Enfields are very addictive.

M44 carbines are good in that they are short and handy but some folks don't like the baoynet and some folks claim that they kick too much. Never noticed too much. Maybe 100 rounds at a time, I'd wanna switch to othe K31. :p The full size Mosins are nice but pretty ungainly.

And the Yugo SKSs are so cheap and cheap to shoot that everyone should have one or five. :p

Yugo Mauser and shoot the ultra cheap 8mm ammo. Thats why I got an FN49 a few months ago, killed two birds with one rifle. Great rifle and ammo cheaper than 7.62X39mm.:what:

Well since you have a good bolt action maybe an SKS would make sense. I just got one and even though I have yet to shoot it, I like it much better than any old bolt action I have seen or had. I have a Turk Mauser and two M-44s and the SKS it much much nicer IMHO. The M-44s are a good truck.trunk gun, they are short and tough and at $50, who cares what happens to it?

Mosin-Nagant 91/30.
I have two MN's, one Finn which is my baby, and a 91/30 that is my "beater". It is the one that I shoot most and just generally play around with.
I actually like them better than many new guns.
Why get a M-44 when you could get a more accurate, less violent gun that shoots the same round for only about $30 more?

I'll throw my vote in for the Yugo M48 as well. It's hard to believe the value on these little buggers. I plan to one day buy a nice M38 or M44, but I simply can't imagine it besting the M48.

I'd get another K31, ,they are an incredible bargain for the prices they are going for now and for the quality you get. My second choice would be a Yugo M48 or 48A, these little buggers tend to be decent shooters and the surplus ammo is much cheaper than the 7.5 swiss stuff. My third choice would be a Czech made 98/22- much better made and likely to be more accurate than the Yugo, but is long and its lowest sight setting is 400 yards.

IMO the best rifles of the bunch are the K31 and the M39. But for a truck gun I would go with the M44 or possibly the M48. An M38 might be the best option, short without the useless bayonet.

3rd, or is it 4th, for a Yugo M48 mauser.

Mine is accurate, good-looking and was cheap.

Plus you can get some sort of milsurp (romanian, bulgarian...) for $25 / 380 rds right now.

can't beat that with a stick...
