11,000 illegal knives seized in Toronto

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Police have seized about 11,000 illegal knives, worth about $250,000, that were found in Toronto's west end.

"These knives have only one purpose," Det. Steve Molyneaux said yesterday -- that purpose being to harm people.

Officers working with Canada Customs found the weapons for sale in five businesses this week after getting a tip from the public.

The knives operate on centrifugal force, which means they can be snapped open with a flick of the wrist. Molyneaux said he thinks "a lot of people are under the misconception that just because it folds over, it's a legitimate weapon and you can have that knife."

He clarified that the knives seized are different from jack knives, also known as Swiss Army knives, which require the use of two hands to open them.

Police displayed their find at a news conference and demonstrated how the knives are opened. The knives were so sharp that Molyneaux nicked himself.

KNIVES FROM CANADA, ITALY, ASIA

Molyneaux said the knives were made in Canada, as well as in Pakistan, China and Italy, but he wouldn't comment on how they may have ended up in Toronto or when they arrived.

Eight people have been charged with several offences, including trafficking prohibited weapons.

They have been released on bail.

The find came amid concerns of violence in the wake of three deadly shootings earlier this week in Toronto. The incidents left two men dead and four others injured, one of them seriously.

The violence prompted Police Chief Julian Fantino to plead again for federal reform of the Criminal Code to stiffen sentences for violent crimes.

Molyneaux acknowledged that firearms are a constant concern for police but said knives have to be considered, as well.

"We do have a lot of injuries to the public with knives. A lot of them can be concealed . . . and you would have no idea what you're dealing with until the blade is open."

Hmm, where have we heard that before? I suppose it is only a matter of time before people actually believe it.

The knives operate on centrifugal force

Pfft, learn some physics

The knives were so sharp that Molyneaux nicked himself.

Amateur.

Illegal Knives

You can't cut an apple with a knife that you can open with one hand??
I use a knife like that for all my needs for a knife.
Next, it will be, "the knives can be opened with 2 hands and could then be used to harm someone."
I think the Canadian people are stupid for allowing this crap to go on. Won't be long before the only allowable knife will be a dull butterknife. Maybe that is all anyone really "needs".

It's illegal in Canada to have a folding knife that you can flip open with one hand?

I just tried flipping a blade open on my swiss army knife with one hand and, while it's not easy, it is possible.

I'm sure that this will have a profound impact on the numbers of boxes opened in anger.

I suppose fixed blade knives are already outlawed. What about those hobby knives with the razor blade type insert? You can extend the blade on them with one hand too.

Someone mail the Canadian Prime Minister the thread on evil hammers. We can probably get legislation that will stop all construction North of the border.

In the display case we have at the PD there is a set of knucks that I took off a person I arrested (on a battery charge) that was made from a plaster cast. Perhaps they need to restrict the possession of bandages and plaster of paris. And nobody need the assault bandages that are already filled with plaster of paris and you just add water.... :uhoh:

Ban knives. From this point on, all food sold in supermarkets must be pre-chopped, minced, mashed, diced, sliced. Anybody caught selling uncut food will face $10,000 fine, 1 year in jail or both.

What a simple solution that will make all homes safer!

Oh, about the existing knives, they must be turned in so we can make manhole covers & cars & motorcycles.

OK, I admit this is somewhat impractical for hunters and fishermen. But here's my solution. Hunters go to hunting zones and if they must conduct a stalk and hit the target (dummy deer). A voucher will be given to them to pick up venison at the butcher's shop. Same for fisherman. They can attach a magnet on their line and lower it into an empty swimming pool. If the "fish" (a cutout with a paperclip) comes up, they can take the fish voucher to the Supermarket and get their fish. To ensure it's sporting, the fishermen must wear blindfolds while fishing.

NY state also has a ban on 'gravity knives' in addition to automatic knives and the like. However, they are legal if you are hunting (there is always SOMETHING in season :) )

AFAIK while the gravity and automatic knives are illegal unless hunting, it would seem that the laws (in NY don't know 'bout Canada) don't state anything about it being illegal to carry a fixed blade.

I just find it ironic that an item made in Canada will be illegal in Canada.. I mean just in print it looks funny..

I suppose fixed blade knives are already outlawed.

Nope, fixed blade knives are legal in Canada and there are no federal blade restrictions.
Canada's knife laws actually are not as restrictive as some American states, but they are only meant to be used as tools.

I think the Canadian people are stupid for allowing this to crap to go on.

One could say the same thing about us Americans for allowing crap like the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the many trapping bans here.
Atleast they can still hunt seals in Canada.
No Canadian province has banned trapping, either.

With an average cost of 22.7 loonies I bet those are some high quality pieces.

Gary, I think I learned on here or TFL that just that mentality was responsible for chopsticks and the fact that you need no knife to eat Chinese food and the like. Supposedly at some point in history knives were banned in feudal China except for the communal village cleaver. I guess if true what is old is new again.

We should ban gravity. Then nobody can throw rocks and injure someone else.

That'd just turn regular rocks into long-range sniper rocks.

Ha ha ha! Those crazy Canadians.
Wait ... I can't buy a switchblade or "chinese throwing star" here ... hmmm.
Stupidity to a lesser degree is still stupidity. Don't worry you fine Canadians, we're right behind you!

Concur. Next person who trips & falls should be convicted of a felony (or tried before an Ecclesiastic Court for heresy).;)

BTW, if we do go to a village cleaver, shouldn't it be chained to the chopping block to prevent its theft & misuse?

hmm... "gravity knife"; wonder if those are legal here? Might want to buy one or three before we decide to ban them too (Provided that we didn't already :barf: )...

:banghead:

Knives travel downhill... from the inventory of bona fide knife shops to the evidence locker of police agencies whose employees can't handle a knife without cutting themselves.

This is not the stupidity you're looking for. Move along.

Does anyone think all 11,000 knives are illegal?

And the States aren't much better. TX - legal to carry a 5.5" fixed-blade knife concealed, but carry a 4" auto or bali and you go to jail if caught. You even get to visit a State Country Club if you get caught in a victim disarmament zone.

Darn knives can be downright dangerous!!!!

Check out this story:

CANTON, Ohio(AP) The severed tip of a restaurant worker's thumb was found in a customer's salad.
Stark County Health Commissioner Bill Franks said an employee at Red Robin Gourmet Burgers in the Canton suburb Jackson Township was chopping lettuce at about 7 p.m. Monday when he cut off a part of his left thumb, including part of the fingernail.
Employees at the restaurant about 70 miles south of Cleveland searched for the tip of his finger, but could not find it. The area was cleaned and sanitized, but the lettuce was placed in the cooler. The lettuce was then used for salads the next day.

"It wound up being served at lunch time Tuesday to a 22-year-old woman," Franks said.

She had eaten most of her salad when she put the human tissue in her mouth, Franks said.
She thought it was a piece of gristle, a health department report said. She then alerted a manager.

Red Robin spokesman Dwayne Chambers said that employees, in their haste to get the injured man to a doctor, failed to follow the chain's procedures and throw out all food in the area.

"We clearly had a breakdown," he said. "We are incredibly sorry about what happened."

Chambers said he spoke with the woman.

"She obviously was pretty upset," he said.

The well-being of customers is the Greenwood, Colo. restaurant's top priority, Chambers said.
Franks said the restaurant has been cited for "serving adulterated food" and having improper supervision.
The restaurant should have reported the incident Monday, he said.
Red Robin has been ordered to train the staff on safe food procedures.
Both the customer and the employee will be tested for blood-borne diseases such as hepatitis and HIV. Franks did not identify either person.

"We don't think there was a lot of blood that was passed, but we just don't want to take any chances," he said.

The Red Robin Web site says the chain has 222 restaurants, with 202 in the U.S., 20 in Canada and 17 currently under construction.

Foolish people

Can't tell you how many times I've seen people at shows pick up knives and immediately run their fingers across factory sharp blades with predictable results! :banghead: Most wouldn't know what a sharp knife was unless it bit them. Oh wait! It just did! :D

Almost any folding knife can be flipped open one handed if you hold the blade instead of the handle. Where there's a will, (or a need), there's a way.

I have an old fairly heavy handled buck knife, lockback folder and from the outset, could open it one handed by grasping the blade back and flicking my hand downward allowing the weight of the handle to open and lock into position and after years of practice can do it as fast as someone using a true gravity knife.

Even a polymer handled bucklite, that my dad uses will do the same.

Politicians and future ones.....when they have nothing better to do will find something that gets them infront of the camera's and push thier agenda.
