The anti-gun rhetoric from Toronto City Council members is unending. In response to my notification that I am boycotting Toronto (in response to their slander against law abiding gun owners), I received the following responses from Toronto City Council Councilor Joe Mihevc & his executive assistant Sean Hill:
If the sole reason for not coming to Toronto from Arizona (and it is debatable that you were coming at all given the weak US dollar and high fuel and airfare costs) is that you cannot bring a concealed weapon to our City, then I think we as a City will have to live with that kind of consequence to a law that will reduce gun crimes in our City.
Sean Hill
Executive Assistant to Councillor Joe Mihevc

Interesting to note that he mentioned concealed weapons when I did not even mention that topic, and also his unfounded belief that a gun ban "will reduce crimes in our city".

Then in a reply to my response he said the following, including an endorsement for Obama (yet another reason to oppose Obama):
From: Councillor Mihevc [email protected]
Date: Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 8:39 AM
Subject: Re: I'm a gun toting yank who won't be spending money in Toronto!

Well, Mr. #####, reasoning like that which you have articulated below (including your opinion on Mr. Obama - a candidate for a Party that Canadians overwhelmingly support), is why you are an American living in Arizona and not a Canadian.
Sean Hill
Executive Assistant to Councillor Mihevc

And who to those leaf-wearing idjuts think they are? Calling us Gun toting yanks like is a bad thing... I think we need to start a war with canada, lol.
Oh wait, Obama would never fight his own! lol

There really is no need in debating with a city in another country on how they should handle their affairs because it doesn't suit you. Arrogance is exactly why a lot of the world dislike Americans. You say it's unending but that is just because you won't let it go. Either travel to their city and obey their laws or stay out. They have a right to govern themselves and since you are not one of their citizens you have no say in it.

Yes, that is correct, however; it sure would be nice if the rest of the world would keep their noses out of the USA's Gun Laws -- which they appear unable to do!

I was not debating their law with them. I was calling them out for their public slander against law aibiding gun owners, to which they replied with further slander.

Fair enough. But don't you believe everyone has at lease some responsibility to educate the un-educated - making the world less stupid?

I'm certainly glad the overwhelming majority of Canadians like Obama, that being the case they can have him. My wife is a former Canadian and she isn't one of the majority that likes Obama.

hey man, its canaduh eh....thats enough for me to stay out of it....of course the central and western parts are populated by more free thinking people than is the eastern part, but the eastern part rules the rest of the country.....such a shame, there are some beautiful places in canada but their politcal climate against self defense ruins everything...

the reason why I have nothing but contempt and disdain for most of Canada and just about all of the Uk is that they pretentiously try to debate our laws with theirs as if their laws work any better - if at all. If there is any group of people that will consistently live up to the stereotype of being smug and pretentious, it would be the french and english (which also includes Canada, since they're a pretentious freak super-hybrid of both groups). With that said, we would be hypocrites to do the same. Leave them alone. You can't go to Canada with a gun, fair and simple. No use educating them aboot guns.

From what I understand once you get away from the major canadian cities Most people are gun friendly[just like The USA]
That said My wife whos chinese wants to go to Toronto to there china town -I absolutly refuse NO WAY this will happen. First I dislike the canadaian customs hasselling anyone with a pro gun sticker on the car and especially hasselling anyone with an NRA hat on >[Ask about my doctor friend who tried to enter canada with an M1 carbine and some mags =YES he declaired it and was going to his property in canada to shoot !] Im In Buffalo NY so toronto is a hop and a skip ...
The place sounds like canadaian NY city. every problem has a liberal solution!

I go to college with a Canadian from Quebec and he says he wouldn't be caught dead in Canada again. He bought a Sig .380, but guess what he cant CCW here either because he is Canadian.
However, we both go shooting at least once a month at the local gun club. So I would have to say the people arent bad just the politicians.

Our neighbors to the North lurched to the Left a long time ago, about the same time that the Democrats adopted the Great Society. I no longer feel welcome in Canada so I just stay away. If you must travel there, obey the laws. I am hopeful the tide will turn and Canada will again be an ally.

I don't object to the lack of education about guns by some of their officials, but rather to their slander against all law abiding gun owners when they call us things like "Gun Toting Yanks" or make statements that gun crime is perpetrated by the law abiding gun owners who utilize gun ranges.

It isn't gun law education, but rather common sense education. Like they say, common sense isn't so common these days.

Also just one small correction, you actually can bring your gun to Canada. You simply have to do some paperwork for long guns, have it locked up, unloaded, all that stuff. You can also request approval for handguns, but you have to request a trip permit that describes where you plan to use your handgun, such as at a gun range or sporting event. Same stuff applies, must be unloaded, locked up, etc.

Unfortunately "self defense" is not an available option to list on their handgun trip permit. Apparently they prefer dead victims to dead perps.

He makes a great point. Why go there anyway? I'll never spend a dollar traveling to, in, nor hunting on the lands of our neighbor to the north. He seems to prefer it that way, and there's plenty to do here in the US. So I'm fine with it as well.

Besides, you can't vote for him or against him. So he gets to be as much of a jerk as he wants to you without consequences. Unless some residents of Toronto are lurking around here. And can maybe find some ways to use his words against him.

Any Americans who contact Toronto to say they won't be visiting their city because of their anti-gun legislation will help our efforts to elect a new mayor next election.

There's a reason the national mantra in Canada is "Toronto sucks."

Come to Alberta - we definitely still have a gun culture here. I'm actually a recent addition to the gun owning public myself. I'm not having quite as much fun as some of you guys though - here you definitely need to have a license to purchase your firearms legally... I've got the requisite one for longarms, but haven' gotten the one for "restricted" (handguns and some more regulated long arms) yet It's in the plans, but I haven't seen much of a point in doing it before I'm in a position to add another gun anyway.

The long winded point of all of this though is - while Toronto definitely plays a hand in our politics, they don't speak for all of us!

Really? Is American tourism big in Toronto? (asking honestly, I have no idea)

Canada, that's one of those countries that still has royalty on the coinage, right?

They also have a duck on some of their coinage, so that doesn't really say much for the monarchy now, does it? :)

It's a huge tourist destination for people in upstate NY. In fact, it is closer to places like Rochester, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls than NYC, which is why I started my masters degree at the University of Toronto instead of a school in NYC. Gun laws aside, it's a very nice and clean city. It has the largest China Town in North America (though I would debate that there's a China Town, so much as a general Asian population of 30%). It is also home to Canada's flagship opera company (the Canadian Opera Company) and Symphony (The Toronto Symphony). For many people -tourists and Torontonians- Toronto IS Canada. You know how some people in the US are like, "why would you want to go anywhere other than NYC?" well for Canadians (and me when I lived there), I would ask the same thing, "Why would you NOT want to live in Toronto?" Honestly, Toronto living + Texas gun laws = ideal life for me. Unfortunately, their city is ruled by socialist ass clowns who have huge egos.

Also, as a rule of thumb, you will go nowhere fast with Canadians if you treat their country as an extension of the US. They are a separate and sovereign nation. The idea that they should establish reciprocity in gun laws with the US in the same manner that Texas has reciprocity with New Mexico, is rather insulting. You're implying that they should merely capitulate to US law. You know when you get mad when Canadians involve their self in our affairs? Well, the door swings both ways.

The whole, "I should be allowed to carry my gun in Toronto" thing is rather insulting too. Canada is not the US. Your rights end at the border. Fight for the Canadian's right to carry, sure, but until that is established, don't bark at the Mayor of Toronto like he's the Mayor of YourTown, USA. Instead of demanding a right from a foreign power, suggest gently, like, "it would be nice if you allowed reciprocity with US CCWers. It would increase tourism, etc." Instead of saying why you're NOT going to Canada, give them reasons why you WOULD go to Canada.

"I would love to take in Wagner's Ring Cycle at the COC, visit the ROM, go to a concert at the Hummingbird, visit the Hockey Hall of Fame, go the the top of the CN Tower, take a stroll in Queen's Park, but..." then mention the safety thing. There's a TON of reasons to visit Toronto. It's a beautiful city. Mention these things in an email, THEN mention how denying civil rights tarnishes the city's image.

Also, since talking with the Liberal Party about gun rights is futile at best, consider writing the Conservative Party of Canada with your concerns. They might be more receptive. Save copies of the emails you receive from the Liberal politicians who are dissuading you from visiting Canada. Email these to Stephen Harper's office or something like that. I'm sure the Prime Minister would be interested to know that certain Canadian politicians in the opposing party are driving down (and discouraging) tourism.

EDIT: One more thing. In your arguments, don't mention the Second Amendment... because that's part of America's Bill of Rights. There's no right to bear arms in the Charter of Rights. So 2A doesn't apply north of the border. However, you COULD mention that self-defense is a human right.

I worked with some members of the Canadian military way back in the 70's when I was but still a young frog. Some years later when I was a fed, I had to work with some mounties (I refuse to capitalize it) in an attempt to exradite a notorious drug-dealer that we had indicted for multiple capital murder charges.

My opinion of them then and my opinion of them now have not changed one damn bit. As a nation, they can kiss my red, white and blue ass. Those who are exceptions to the general Canadian mentality of French superiority combined with British arrogance, the combination of which equals "The world not only owes us, but should worship us" are just that--exceptions, and few and far between.

Canada has zero problem sticking their crooked French-leaning nose into OUR affairs simply because we share a border with them. Canada has no problems criticizing us roundly--as they did shortly after 9/11--but offers no solutions other than continuing to harbor more fugities, suspected terrorists and known international criminals.

Geographically, it's a beautiful country. And that's about the nicest thing I'll say about it.

Oh, and Canada is also a major source of illegal aliens entering our country from the north. Great neighor, "eh?"

Jeff

Yes, that's right, so we should let the good people to our North rot because of your experience. Look, I got dumped on when I was working on my Masters. The anti-Americanism became so bad I had to leave the University. That doesn't mean I'm going to sell the entire country down river.

Self defense is a human right. I made it a point in my previous post to mention that they don't like American rhetoric, which is fine... they're not Americans, they're Canadians. I don't think it's unreasonable to help them out when they need it.

Not all Canadians are anti gun, the country has just been hijacked.

Why the heck would I went to go to Canada or Toronto. There is just as much beauty here in the US. The people are friendlier, I would rather spend my money in the US anyway.
