Does the 1100 Special Field take regular 1100 barrels, or is it's configuration like that of the 870 Special Field, where the barrels are not interchangeable with those of a standard 870? The reason I ask is that I saw a nice 1100 S.F. for sale, but would also like to use it with a 28" barrel. Remington website only states that 1100 barrels are not interchangeable with 11-87 barrels, and vice versa. Thanks for the info!

I do believe that the Special Field and regular barrels are interchangeable on 870’s and 1100’s (not 870-1100 or 1100-870) with the exception of the LT & LW barrels.
The barrels that do not swap are the Special Purpose barrels.
Of course, I could be wrong.

The regular 1100 barrels will work on the Special Field model. You cannot use anything other that the 2 3/4", the 3" will not work. Get the gun you will love it!

The barrels interchange on my 12-ga '91 Special Field 1100. The magazine tube being shorter by one round, the forends aren't interchangeable, but you can use the short forend with longer barrels (the gas ring is in the same place and all.) You could put a Hastings barrel on it, for example. The SF looks funny with a longer barrel, to my eyes...and handles much worse. Early guns had 21" barrels, mine is a later Rem-Choked 23" (actually 23-1/2".) It doesn't give up much to a longer barrel in general use, and swings like a 20 but still hits like a 12; and the straight-grip stock makes it feel like a nice older double. One of the dumber things Big Green has done was discontinuing this model, IMNSHO. You should be able to buy a pretty nice one for $450 or so...Kittery Trading Post had one, last time I was there.
