Kicked in the door and started shooting- what an MO. Wonder who/how old the other suspects were?

Milburn is sure lucky re. charges if what this story says is true. But it is Texas after all, they sometimes do things differently there.

Mother and son shot during violent home invasion in SE Houston

An apparent home invasion ended with three people being shot -- a mother, her young son, and one of the suspects.

The attempted break-in happened around 6:30am Tuesday at The Cove apartment complex in on Windmill near Windwater in southeast Houston. Neighbors at the complex say they heard at least three gunshots and Houston police think this may have been an intended home invasion.

An 11-year-old boy and his mother, Regina Hearst, 31, along with one of the suspects, Marcus Brown, 12, were injured during the violent home invasion.

Witnesses say three men kicked in the front door and began shooting. The mother and son were both struck, while the father, Eric Milburn, was able to get his gun and return fire.

One of the suspects was critically injured after being shot in the head. Witnesses say the father then walked outside where the suspect had collapsed and he shot him again.
…

The mother and child are both in stable condition. In fact, Hearst was seen walking around the scene shortly after police arrived. The boy gave a thumbs up as he was being loaded onto the ambulance. They are expected to be OK. Brown is said to be in very critical condition.

Police are still trying to track down the other gunmen. No charges are expected to be filed against Milburn.

Why are you surprised at the 12 year old ?? They can kill you just as dead. There is recent story about a women criminal who used her 5 year old as a look out. Then of course NJ's worst serial killer trained his son in the same job, they worked together - wonderful !!

Look at all the pre-teen kids in palestine shooting and committing violent acts towards Israelis.

How much you wanna bet his parents were lowlives? :barf: :scrutiny:

Gangs use underage members for such errands as the younger kids won't get the jail time an adult would.

That second shot by the father would be a no-no in California. Of course he could claim to have acted in a rage--I see another person got 4 months for killing his wife in Texas as he was in a rage. Got 16 years for injuring the man with whom she was sleeping.

In my area the typical violent criminal is a male teenager. There's more to the description but I'm not going to get gang-flamed for getting any more specific than that.

I'm not saying that one should concentrate ONLY on the "average crook" and ignore everyone else, nor am I implying that everyone who fits the profile should be regarded with suspicion. Just that it does help to have an idea of what a violent criminal in your area is most probably going to look like.

I'm PRIMARILY saying that one should mentally be prepared to deal with a fairly young attacker. Thinking "he's just a kid" while you should be shooting instead could get you dead.

Wonder who/how old the other suspects were?

I read about this somewhere else. I believe they were reported as being 14 and 17 or something along those lines. They ARE being held and charged.

Witnesses say the father then walked outside where the suspect had collapsed and he shot him again.

Uh-oh. Hopefully the perp was still armed and dangerous and this wasn't just to "finish him off". Although he deserved to be "finished off' I bet the courts wouldn't like that.

200 years ago, and for most of recorded history for that matter, 12 was old enough to be a soldier.

Still is in some parts of the world.

Good point. By 12 I'd been launching projectiles for 5 years. I may have only owned a BB gun but I had shot a 30-06 by that age with adequate proficiency.

Well, I guess maybe I'm just a tad more innocent than some of the really hardened-by-life folks out there. It still surprises me to a small degree that kids this young would be taking part in this level of criminal activity, that's all.

Now before anyone worries about me too much for being too soft, it has long been a saying of mine (to students especially) that they don't bury you a bit deeper if it's a 30-year-old that kills you, than they do if it's a 13-year-old- so don't let the apparent age of an assailant get to you.

But I can tell you this, anyone old enough to kick in my door- or participate in doing so- is old enough to get shot for it. Worrying about the perp's age, sex or national origin would be the last thing on my mind. Someone else can worry about checking the IDs afterward.

I like to think that one of America's greatest accomplishments is a society in which something like this is worth commenting on.

I noticed this trend of younger people being involved in violent crimes several years ago, and I've repeatedly stated that I'd have no problem dropping a 12 year old.....or younger if necessary.

If a person is old enough to aim and fire a gun at someone during commision of a criminal act then that young person is old enough to bet shot by potential victims and or the police. You ask the police in this are and they will tell you that 12 year old and higher kids are doing some of the driveby shootings nowadays.

The first person I ever arrested was 14 and he had knife and was robbing an old lady on the street. I was asked two questions by my chief: If he had dropped the knife and run away when you ordered him to drop the knife, what would you have done? I told him I would have let him go. then he asked what would I have done if he had cut the lady and started to run off? I looked him in the eye and said I would have shot him at that time. He said OK and that was it.

The next town south of here had two officers shot last night. The sergeant was killed and the patrolman was critically injured. You may read about it at www.modestobee.com The perp was wearing no shirt, had a shaved head and a number of tatoos.

Our heart and prayers go out to the slain officers family and to the patrolman and his family. When I was in uniform our primary goal was to go home alive at the end of the shift.

NOTICE NOTICE

There is an update re: the police shooting in Ceres, California.

The perpetrator was an AWOL 19 year old marine back from Iraq. He did not want to return so he took an AK-47 type rifle and shot two police outside a liquor store. He was killed later when he confronted additional officers that were searching for him.

This was probably a typo in the abclocal story. The Houston Chronicle reports:
An 11-year-old boy and his mother were shot during an early-morning home invasion at a southeast Houston apartment Tuesday that ended with one of the intruders shot by the father.

The boy and his mother were treated at Ben Taub General Hospital for non-life-threatening wounds.

The wounded intruder remained at Ben Taub on Tuesday in critical condition.

Investigators said the 27-year-old intruder, whose identity was not released, was one of three men who burst into the apartment in the 9900 block of Windmill Lakes about 6:30 a.m. and opened fire on the family.
