It appears this young man was able to luckily save his and his grandmother's lives.

The elledged part has to do with liability .Until convicted they are elledged in order to prevent the media from law suits. It is the world we live in.

That is certainly one part of it. The other part is that the alleged intruders may have been invitees with drug deals that went wrong or some sort of disagreement where a shooting occurred, and the explanation given by the homeowner was the the person(s) shot was an intruder...only later it was determined that the shootee wasn't an intruder. In cases like this, you really only have one part of the story and no way to verify validity.
