After my tests of the Berry's HHP, dudedog PM'd me about could I test some RMR 124 jacketed HP's? I jumped at the chance I love to test just about anything.
Along come a SFRB that when I picked it up felt like a lot more than a few 9mm bullets. 25 RMR 124's, 5 Montana gold 124 HP, 10 Nosler 124 "sport" HP, and 10 115 Hornady XTP-HP. All got tested.
Also some .223 bullets, some Federal Fusion 62 grain BT, the fusion is supposed to be a good hunting bullet for the .223.
Well here's the first the RMR 124 HP;
Wound channel, penetration.
Pried some of the wax away from where the bullet stopped.
Classic mushroom, jacket folded back around the base. No lead or jacket lost in the wound channel. Retained weight, well if it started at 124, it GAINED 1.5 grains!
Here's the Montana gold;
That brass jacket is either too thin or too brittle. Shards all along the would channel.
Normal penetration, didn't weigh it.
now the Nosler HP;
First bullet punched through the test tube clean was lost in the backstop. Second one I put the tube with rags stuffed inside behind the test tube to catch the bullet. It too went slick and clean through, was caught in the rags. NO EXPANSION! The test tubes have a plastic cap that I use to seal the tube so the wax doesn't leak. A chunk of that plastic was jammed into the bottom of the HP. I think it is what happens to a lot of HP's, plugging is what it's called. Clothing usually causes it.
I just ordered a digital microscope, some real close ups will be on the way.
The H. XTP's were as usual, classic mushroom, some shards of lead and jacket in the wound channel.
Didn't take a pic of it, but I will once that microscope shows up from Amazon.
