Which gun store is this? I see it's in WA and in the Seattle area. I'd like to know if its a store I should avoid, or one where I know the staff and maybe something is amiss.

Also if you go the WAC route, you need to be a member to purchase/sell firearms. FWDG is a good store but the owner, if you've met him, is a bit indifferent and impatient to sales/knowledge sharing unless you're a close friend. The rest of the staff there I enjoy talking and buying from though.

you can find on gunbrokers search dealers in your area who do the transfers.....most here are $25 for long guns, shipping is about $40...... run and find another dealer if you havent paid him anything yet.

my dealer charged me 10% of total for a transfer.
That too is a poor practice. The procedure is no different for a $150 gun than it is a $750 gun. It's just crazy. Around here most of the reputable shops will charge between $15 & $30 for a transfer.

They are not really charging you $130 to do a transfer. From your post the gun store is going to buy the rifle and then sell it to you with a markup. No different than if they bought it from their regular wholesaler and then sold it to you at a markup as you originally intended to do. It only seems like you are being scammed because you are seeing what they are paying. You should purchase the rifle directly from the person on the internet instead of having them buy it for you if you want to avoid the wholesaler-to-retail markup.

Tikka, Check out the Kent Jewelry and Loan in the current Little Nickle Ads. Frank Buell advertises transfers for $20 (plus state sales tax). That's about as inexpensive as you can get.

Cliff, I sure hope you mean tax on the $20, not the whole price. I mean, if I send money to a dealer in another state then the sale happened in another state, where WA cannot charge tax. The only "sale" in WA would be the service of providing the transfer, so it could be taxable.

All around here charge tax on the whole price. Here is one I found on the internet.

"Washington residents must pay Washington State and Local Sales Tax on all merchandise brought into WA under Dave's Guns Business License. This includes items paid for by the individual prior to shipping that were not already taxed. The present Sales/Use Tax Rate is 8%."

I've bought several guns from Gun Broker.com, and of course each time I have to have them shipped to my gun shop at a $35 (or $50 depending on which shop I use) FFL fee. After about 5 guns shipped to my store the guy finally said ...You Know We Sell Guns Here...so it was pack your bags your going on a guilt trip. I felt so bad I finally bought a gun for this gun store. There is no set fee for Gun Shops charging a FFL transfer fee. It's pretty much whatever they feel you will pay. Maybe if the Gun Stores would be more competitive with Gun Broker I would buy more guns in there store.

This use tax dodge is fairly common, it is just a way for the state to sidestep the Interstate Commerce Act. Usually, it is only enforced for motor vehicles being brought into the state, but your FFL would be correct to charge the use tax on the selling price of the item and if shipping and service are taxable in WA, then use tax on the shipping and sales tax on the 4473 "service".

As soon as they can figure out how to have merchants collect it for them, we'll all be paying sales/use taxes on everything we order off the internet.

Ballots really, really should have a None of the Above candidate for every office...

There's a large shop that charges $50 for transfers and is about 3 miles from my house. I told them I had spent well over $3,500 in there the last year and that price was double what most other shops charge and asked if they'd lower it. They refused so I told them why I wasn't coming back and now I drive another 10 minutes and get transfers for $20 or less now. And, the FFL I now use appreciates my business.

Don't let them take advantage of you. Tell them why you won't be back. Then, don't go back.

What is the name of this shop. Post it for all to see, cancel the order, and tell them where they can read about their business practices.

I got a list of FFLs from the internet and made many phone calls several years ago to find out how much they charge and what their procedures were. I found a small array of charges from $10 - $40 but all of their procedures were the same - have the gun shipped to them, they do the background check and register the serial number, you pay their fee and take the gun home. My local (& favorite) gun shop was one of the more expensive so now I deal with a place called "The Trading Post". $10 fee - nothing more.

FFL /Transfer fees

Hello Matt at SOVEREIGN ARMS LLC HERE

We are a MO FFL dealer and handle internet transfers for 30. for the first firearm, and 15. for each additional per transaction. We are new to this forum and appreciate all referrals: www.sovereignarms.com We are LICENSED MO/FL CONCEALED CARRY AND NRA BASIC PISTOL/ PPITH/PPOTH INSTRUCTORS / COLD STEEL KNIFE/ AND FOBUS HOLSTER DISTRIBUTORS AS WELL. We have had experience with the passage of CA's new CFLC laws with CA gun shops wanting outrageous prices for transfers. Everyone is trying to keep the gun sales in their state.

It is very difficult as a dealer to even make 10% over cost right now because of internet sales. If dealers can keep out of state sales from coming in by inflating reasonable transfer fees they are doing it.

GB has a feature to find FFL's who will handle transfers for your area. When you are logged in to GB, click on "FOR BUYERS" tab, then click "FIND A TRANSFER DEALER",
enter you zip code in the appropriate space and whalaa! An instant list of available transfer dealers in your area:)

Hope that helps!

Wades gun shop in bellevue. In my personal experience it had extremely poor customer service and high prices. Thanks for all the input.

Wow. Maybe I don't give my local stores enough credit. Even the worst of them is lower than GunBroker on virtually everything.

Buy it. Do not forget to add in a 20% tip for their trouble:)

And one wonders why some folks lump gun shops in with used car salesmen and the other bottom feeders.
